The Lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with marked variability of inheritance. It is characterized by abnormalities of lacrimal and/or salivary system, anomalies of ears, teeth and limbs. Persistent dry mouth and enamel hypoplasia cause serious dental effects. Here, a case of LADD syndrome, its clinical spectrum and accompanying therapeutic challenges is discussed.

Low temperature radioluminescence spectra of LiF, variously co-doped with Mg, Cu and P, show highly unusual temperature dependencies which resemble thermoluminescence data. The signals include intense peaks and a relatively weak continuous background. One peak occurs below 30 K, together with a major peak near 125 K. Remineralization of enamel lesions in vitro by use of sequential treatments with an alkaline (pH 9) phosphate (1 mol/L) solution and slightly acidic (pH 6) calcium (1 mol/L) solution was reported to be relatively ineffective. Our experience with a U-intoxicated patient and human data in the literature suggest the kidney U burden should not be allowed to exceed 0.26 micrograms g-1. Patients receiving long term parenteral nutrition may develop metabolic bone disease. In all 11 patients studied, histologic studies of bone showed excessive unmineralized bone tissue despite normal plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Three patients also had bone pain and fractures and severe urinary loss of calcium and phosphate. Withdrawal of vitamin D from parenteral nutrition solutions was associated with improved histologic findings of bone in all patients, shown by a decrease in osteoid tissue and an increase in tetracycline uptake. 125I-labeled human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) binds in a specific and saturable manner to human fibroblasts. At 37 degrees C, the cell-bound 125I-hEGF initially may be recovered in a native form by acid extraction; upon subsequent incubation, the cell-bound 125I-hEGF is degraded very rapidly, with the appearance in the medium of 125I-monoiodotyrosine. At 0 degrees C, cell-bound 125I-hEGF is not degraded but slowly dissociates from the cell. The data are consistent with a mechanism in which 125I-hEGF initially is bound to the cell surface and subsequently is internlized before degradation.

Human red cells were incubated at pH 8.2 and 30 mM phosphate concentration with glucose, glucose plus methylene blue, or inosine. In 16 normal subjects, the lactate production rate (LPR) from glucose alone was 92.2 +/- 7.5 mumoles per minute per liter red blood cell. With methylene blue added, the mean LPR was 118.5 +/- 7.4 per cent of control glucose values. With inosine as substrate the mean LPR was 68.5 +/- 6.0 per cent of that from glucose. The uptake of Cl minus by the ascomycetes Neocosmospora vasinfecta was investigated. Intramycelial concentrations of more than 55 mM (890-fold the external concentration) were reached. Accumulation was as inorganic Cl minus and nystatin induced total loss of mycelial Cl minus without extensive protein loss, implying that Cl minus retention was not due to binding to macromolecules.
