Coherence of BOLD signal and electrical activity in the human brain during deep sevoflurane anesthesia.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in neural activity induce changes in functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal. Commonly, increases in BOLD signal are ascribed to cellular excitation. OBJECTIVE: The relationship between electrical activity and BOLD signal in the human brain was probed on the basis of burst suppression EEG. This condition includes two distinct states of high and low electrical activity. METHODS: Resting-state simultaneous EEG and BOLD measurements were acquired during deep sevoflurane anesthesia with burst suppression EEG in nineteen healthy v

Development of Cortical Morphology Evaluated with Longitudinal MR Brain Images of Preterm Infants.

INTRODUCTION: The cerebral cortex develops rapidly in the last trimester of pregnancy. In preterm infants, brain development is very vulnerable because of their often complicated extra-uterine conditions. The aim of this study was to quantitatively describe cortical development in a cohort of 85 preterm infants with and without brain injury imaged at 30 and 40 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). METHODS: In the acquired T2-weighted MR images, unmyelinated white matter (UWM), cortical grey matter (CoGM), and cerebrospinal fluid in the extracerebral space (CSF) were automatically segmented. Based on

Auditory hallucinations: A review of the ERC "VOICE" project.

In this invited review I provide a selective overview of recent research on brain mechanisms and cognitive processes involved in auditory ha … be neuronal hyper-activation that draws attentional focus inward, and which is not inhibited due to frontal lobe hypo-activation. It is further suggested that this is maintained through abnormal glutamate and possibly gamma-amino-butyric-acid transmitter mediation, which could point towards new pathways for pharmacological treatment. A final section discusses …

Alzheimer's disease and methanol toxicity (part 2): lessons from four rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) chronically fed methanol.

A recently established link between formaldehyde, a methanol metabolite, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology has provided a new impetus t … ncreases in tau phosphorylated aggregates and amyloid plaques in four brain regions postmortem: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and the hippocampus. Tau phosphorylation in cerebrospinal fluid was found to be dependent on methanol feeding status, but phosphorylation changes in the brain were found to be persistent 6 months after the methanol fee …

Rhesus monkey brain development during late infancy and the effect of phencyclidine: a longitudinal MRI and DTI study.

Early brain development is a complex and rapid process, the disturbance of which may cause the onset of brain disorders. Based on longitudinal imaging data acquired from 6 to 16 months postnatal, we describe a systematic trajectory of monkey brain development during late infancy, and demonstrate the influence of phencyclidine (PCP) on this trajectory. Although the general developmental trajectory of the monkey brain was close to that of the human brain, the development in monkeys was faster and regionally specific. Gray matter volume began to decrease during late infancy in monkeys, much earli

Visual attention deficits in Alzheimer's disease: relationship to HMPAO SPECT cortical hypoperfusion.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) display a multiplicity of cognitive deficits in domains such as memory, language, and attention, all of which can be clearly linked to the underlying neuropathological alterations. The typical degenerative changes occur early on in the disease in the temporal-parietal lobes, with other brain regions, such as the frontal cortex, becoming more affected as the disease progresses. In light of the importance of the parietal cortex in mediating visuospatial attentional processing, in the present study, we investigated a deficit in covert orienting of visual att

[A case of MELAS presenting complex partial status epilepticus].

We reported a 37-year-old man who presented complex partial status epilepticus as the initial symptom of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, la … gion. High amplitude slow waves were also observed on the right hemisphere, especially in the right frontal lobe. These ictal discharges gradually decreased at their amplitude and in frequency, and then ictal EEG turned to the interictal EEG. During an ictal period, conjugated eye deviation to the left side and consciousness loss were observed. These seizures …

Expression of an HSP110 family, ischemia-responsive protein (irp94), in the rat brain after transient forebrain ischemia.

The transcriptional expression of an ischemia responsive protein (irp94) in the hippocampus of rats was analyzed by Northern blotting. A transient forebrain ischemia was induced in the rats by temporary occluding of the bilateral common carotid arteries (CCAs) for various periods, and then reperfusion. Among the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes, and the cerebellum and hippocampus, the maximum mRNA expression of irp94 was at the occipital lobe, and the minimum was at the parietal lobe following ten min of forebrain ischemia. The irp94 mRNA expression reached a maximum fifteen min

Gray matter covariations and core symptoms of autism: the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project.

BACKGROUND: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies in autism spectrum disorder (autism) have yielded diverging results. This might partly be attributed to structural alterations being associating with the combined influence of several regions rather than with a single region. Further, these structural covariation differences may relate to continuous measures of autism rather than with categorical case-control contrasts. The current study aimed to identify structural covariation alterations in autism, and assessed canonical correlations between brain covariation patterns and core autism symptoms

Altered frontal and occipital cortical microstructure in obsessive-compulsive disorder - a multisite mega-analysis.

Alterations in cortical morphology have consistently been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the microstructural properties of the cortex in OCD, including intracortical myelination, remain far less explored. The contrast between signal intensity in gray and subjacent white matter from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), i.e. the gray/white matter contrast (GWC), is linked to intracortical myelination and may offer novel insights into the cortical microstructure of OCD. Here, we compared multivariate patterns of GWC defined from an independent component analysi

Frontal and Parietal Activities Associated With Different Inhibitory Processes in a Stroop-Matching/Stop-Signal Task: A Channel-Wise fNIRS Study.

Inhibition is an important component of cognitive control that encompasses multiple processes, such as interference control, inhibition of prepotent responses and suppression of ongoing responses. Frontal and temporoparietal regions of the cortex are implicated differently in inhibitory functions. The Stroop-matching/stop-signal task is a recent task that uses Stroop stimuli and stop-signals to create conditions that allow the investigation of the three forms of inhibition aforementioned. The task provides a way to distinguish the effect of these inhibitions as well as their interactions using

Parietofrontal Networks Mediate Contextual Influences in the Appraisal of Pain and Disgust Facial Expressions.

We appraise other people's emotions by combining multiple sources of information, including somatic facial/body reactions and the surrounding context. Wealthy literature revealed how people take into account contextual information in the interpretation of facial expressions, but the mechanisms mediating such influence still need to be duly investigated. Across two experiments, we mapped the neural representations of distinct (but comparably unpleasant) negative states, pain, and disgust, as conveyed by naturalistic facial expressions or contextual sentences. Negative expressions led to shared

Cognitive predictors of mental health trajectories are mediated by inferior frontal and occipital development during adolescence.

Laboratory studies show brain maturation involves synaptic pruning and cognitive development. Human studies suggest links between early cognitive performance and later mental health, but inconsistencies remain. It is unclear if specific brain regions mediate this relationship, and the molecular underpinnings are not well understood. Here, our longitudinal analyses in both the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development and IMAGEN cohorts establish inverted U-shaped relationships between baseline executive function and subsequent symptom trajectories in the high-symptom individuals, whose externaliz

Time synchronization between parietal-frontocentral connectivity with MRCP and gait in post-stroke bipedal tasks.

BACKGROUND: In post-stroke rehabilitation, functional connectivity (FC), motor-related cortical potential (MRCP), and gait activities are common measures related to recovery outcomes. However, the interrelationship between FC, MRCP, gait activities, and bipedal distinguishability have yet to be investigated. METHODS: Ten participants were equipped with EEG devices and inertial measurement units (IMUs) while performing lower limb motor preparation (MP) and motor execution (ME) tasks. MRCP, FCs, and bipedal distinguishability were extracted from the EEG signals, while the change in knee degree

Frontoparietal Brain Network Plays a Crucial Role in Working Memory Capacity during Complex Cognitive Task.

Recent neurophysiological studies provide inconsistent results of frontoparietal network (FPN) stimulation for altering working memory (WM) capacity. This study aimed to boost WM capacity by manipulating the activity of the FPN via dual-site high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation. Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to three stimulation groups, receiving either simultaneous anodal stimulation of the frontal and parietal areas (double stimulation), or stimulation of the frontal area only (single stimulation), or the placebo stimulation (sham) to frontal and parietal

Double-blind randomized N-of-1 trial of transcranial alternating current stimulation for mal de débarquement syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a medically refractory neurotological disorder characterized by persistent oscillating vertigo that follows a period of entrainment to oscillating motion such as experienced during sea or air travel. Fronto-occipital hypersynchrony may correlate with MdDS symptom severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals with treatment refractory MdDS lasting at least 6 months received single administrations of three fronto-occipital transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) protocols in an "n-of-1" double-blind randomized design: alpha frequency

Top-Down Attentional Modulation in Human Frontal Cortex: Differential Engagement during External and Internal Attention.

Decades of electrophysiological research on top-down control converge on the role of the lateral frontal cortex in facilitating attention to behaviorally relevant external inputs. However, the involvement of frontal cortex in the top-down control of attention directed to the external versus internal environment remains poorly understood. To address this, we recorded intracranial electrocorticography while subjects directed their attention externally to tones and responded to infrequent target tones, or internally to their own thoughts while ignoring the tones. Our analyses focused on frontal a
