Effectiveness of transcatheter arterial embolization for patients with shock from abdominopelvic trauma: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is a useful endovascular technique for controlling hemorrhage in blunt abdominopelvic trauma without shock. However, several studies have reported that TAE is safe and effective for controlling hemorrhage in hypovolemic shock. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of TAE for patients with shock from abdominopelvic trauma. METHOD: The medical records of patients with abdominopelvic trauma at Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Medical Center, Srinakharinwirot University from January 2014 to January 2019 were retrospective

Multicentre observational study describing the systemic response to small-area burns in children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Burns of less than 10% total body surface area (TBSA) are common injuries in children under five years of age. The inflammatory response to burn injury is well recognised for burns greater than 20% TBSA but has not been described for smaller burns. The aim of this study was to describe the systemic response to burn injury in young children with small-area burns. METHODS: The Morbidity In Small Thermal Injury in Children study (MISTIC) was a multicentre prospective observational cohort study that recruited 625 patients under five years of age with burns of less than

Upregulation of serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 exacerbates brain injury and neurological deficits after cardiac arrest.

Cardiopulmonary arrest (CA) is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. CA-induced brain injury is influenced by multifactorial processes, including reduced cerebral blood flow (hypoperfusion) and neuroinflammation, which can lead to neuronal cell death and functional deficits. We have identified serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase-1 (SGK1) as a new target in brain ischemia previously described in the heart, liver, and kidneys (i.e., diabetes and hypertension). Our data suggest brain SGK1 mRNA and protein expression (i.e., hippocampus), presented with hypoperfusion

Oxytocin mediated cardioprotection is independent of coronary endothelial function in rats.

The cardioprotective effect of oxytocin (OT) has been well established. However, there are no related studies on the role of endothelia in oxytocin-induced cardioprotection. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) model was established by injection of 0.01 % Triton X-100 in the isolated rat heart. Oxytocin pretreatment was conducted at the end of stabilization for 40 min, followed by 30 min global ischemia and 60 min reperfusion to induce I/R injury. Coronary perfusion pressure, hemodynamics and arrhythmia severity scores were measured respectively. High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) was evalu

The protective effects of acupoint gel embedding on rats with myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

AIMS: Prevention and treatment of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury has for many years been a hot topic in treating ischemic heart disease. As one of the most well-known methods of complementary and alternative medicine, acupuncture has attracted increasing interest in preventing myocardial I/R injury due to its remarkable effectiveness and minimal side effect. However, traditional acupuncture approaches are limited by cumbersome execution, high labor costs and inevitable pain caused by frequent stimulation. Therefore, in this work, we aimed to develop a novel acupoint gel embedding

Recombinant α-Klotho may be prophylactic and therapeutic for acute to chronic kidney disease progression and uremic cardiomyopathy.

α-Klotho is highly expressed in the kidney, and its extracellular domain is cleaved and released into the circulation. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a state of α-Klotho deficiency, which exerts multiple negative systemic effects on numerous organs including the cardiovascular system. Since acute kidney injury (AKI) greatly escalates the risk of CKD development, we explored the effect of α-Klotho on prevention and treatment on post-AKI to CKD progression and cardiovascular disease. Therein, ischemia reperfusion injury-induced AKI was followed by early administration of recombinant α-Klotho or

Effects of regional brain injury on the newborn autonomic nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral mapping of central autonomic nervous system (ANS)(1) function in mature animals and humans lateralizes sympathetic and parasympathetic influence predominantly to the right and left cerebral hemispheres, respectively. Spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV)(2) is an established measure of ANS function. We examined whether such lateralization is present in the term newborn. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of infants >36 weeks of gestation diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).(3) We included infants with neonatal EEG and regional injury

Remote ischemic postconditioning promotes the survival of retinal ganglion cells after optic nerve injury.

Ischemic conditioning, the application of a mild ischemic stimulus to an ischemia-sensitive structure like the heart or brain either before (preconditioning) or after (postconditioning) its exposure to a lethal ischemic insult, is known to switch on endogenous protective mechanisms. However, most studies of its neuroprotective effect in the central nervous system (CNS) have focused on ischemic damage or related conditions like hypoxia, while its potential in treating other neural diseases remains uncertain. In particular, the recent discovery of remote ischemic postconditioning whereby mild is

Intramuscular beta2-agonist administration enhances early regeneration and functional repair in rat skeletal muscle after myotoxic injury.

Systemic administration of beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonists (beta(2)-agonists) can improve skeletal muscle regeneration after injury. However, therapeutic application of beta(2)-agonists for muscle injury has been limited by detrimental cardiovascular side effects. Intramuscular administration may obviate some of these side effects. To test this hypothesis, the right extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle from rats was injected with bupivacaine hydrochloride to cause complete muscle fiber degeneration. Five days after injury, half of the injured muscles received an intramuscular injection of form

Posttranslational modifications of cardiac and skeletal muscle proteins by reactive oxygen species after burn injury in the rat.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the involvement of oxidative damage in muscle wasting after burn injury. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Burn injury damages tissue at the site of the burn and also affects peripheral tissue. There is evidence to suggest that reactive oxygen species may be generated in increased amounts after burn, and these may contribute to wound healing and to posttranslational modifications of tissue constituents distant from the wound site. METHODS: The oxidation of muscle proteins was assessed, using the dinitrophenylhydrazine assay for carbonyl content, in muscles of rats after a full

Facilitation of Autophagosome-Lysosome Fusion by LAPTM4A: A Novel Strategy for Attenuating Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MIR) injury compromises therapeutic effects of revascularization and leads to functional impairment and exacerbation of structural damage in the heart. Limiting the damage caused by MIR is crucial but is still an unmet clinical need because of the complexity of the underlying mechanisms. Increasing evidence suggests that lysosomal autophagy plays a significant regulatory role in MIR injury. The specific mechanisms involved remain to be fully understood. METHODS: We here systematically analyzed the murine MIR model database to screen the potentially

Z-DNA-binding protein 1 exacerbates myocardial ischemia‒reperfusion injury by inducing noncanonical cardiomyocyte PANoptosis.

Myocardial ischemia‒reperfusion (I/R) injury is the primary factor that counteracts the beneficial effects of reperfusion therapy. Cardiomyocyte death serves as the fundamental pathological hallmark of I/R injury. However, targeting a single type of cell death has been reported to be ineffective at preventing I/R injury. ZBP1 is well established as a nucleic acid sensor that activates inflammatory and various cell death signaling pathways. However, the specific role of ZBP1 in adult cardiomyocytes, particularly in the absence of nucleic acid ligands, remains largely unexplored. In this study,

Ubiquitin-specific protease 11 Aggravates Ischemia-reperfusion-induced Cardiomyocyte Pyroptosis and Injury by Promoting TRAF3 Deubiquitination.

BACKGROUND: In myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, myocardial damage is aggravated when blood perfusion is restored in myocardial infarction. Ubiquitin-specific protease 11 (USP11), a deubiquitinating enzyme, could remove the ubiquitination of substrate proteins and regulate protein stability, thereby affecting multiple pathological processes. AIMS: To investigate the potential function of USP11 in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and its underlying mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo and in vitro experimental study. METHODS: The ischemia-reperfusion rat model in vivo was evolved, w

Chicken bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells improve lung and distal organ injury.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are associated with pulmonary protection and longevity. We separated chicken bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs); investigated whether BM-MSCs can improve lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung and distal organ injury; and explored the underlying mechanisms. Ninety-six male ICR (6 weeks old) mice were randomly divided into three groups: Sham, LPS, and LPS + MSC groups. The mice were intratracheally injected with 5 mg/kg LPS to induce acute lung injury (ALI). The histopathological severity of injury to the lung, liver, kidney, heart, and aortic tiss

Beta-blocker use is associated with improved outcomes in adult trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Beta-adrenoreceptor blocker (beta-blocker) therapy may improve outcomes in surgical patients by decreasing cardiac oxygen consumption and hypermetabolism. Because beta-blockers can lower the systemic blood pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure, there is concern regarding their use in patients with head injury. However, beta-blockers may protect beta-receptor rich brain cells by attenuating cerebral oxygen consumption and metabolism. We hypothesized that beta-blockers are safe in trauma patients, even if they have suffered a significant head injury. METHODS: Using pharmacy and t

Mitochondrial remodeling in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Extensive mitochondrial remodeling occurs during heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), yielding either protective adaptations that mitigate dysfunction or detrimental alterations that accelerate disease progression. Central to this remodeling are maladaptive metabolic reprogramming, featured by aberrant fuel preference and electron transport chain deficiency, which underlie the depletion of bioenergetic reserves. Concurrently, alterations in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-producing sites and antioxidant system elevate mitochondrial ROS production while diminishing ROS scavenging

Metformin as a potential therapeutic agent in broken heart syndrome: Targeting AMPK-dependent cardio-protection and microvascular function.

Broken heart syndrome (Takotsubo or stress cardiomyopathy) is a transient form of acute left ventricular dysfunction commonly triggered by emotional or physical stress. Despite its reversible nature, it may lead to severe complications such as pulmonary edema, arrhythmias, or cardiac arrest. Current management remains largely supportive, with no established pharmacological therapy. Metformin, a well-known anti-diabetic drug, has emerged as a potential cardioprotective agent due to its multifaceted actions on cellular metabolism, vascular function, and neuro-hormonal balance. By activating the

Cardiotoxicity adverse outcome pathway network: towards mechanistic and quantitative modelling.

INTRODUCTION: Chemical-induced heart toxicity remains a major challenge in drug development and environmental safety, largely because current testing often relies on narrow, late-stage endpoints that miss the complex biological progression of the toxicities. To address this, we developed a comprehensive Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) network that maps how early (bio) chemical triggers evolve into organ-level dysfunction. METHODS: By integrating data from the OECD AOP-Wiki, we constructed a unified network of 64 biological events and 94 documented relationships that identifies the critical biol

Severe Peripartum Cardiomyopathy With Complete Functional Recovery: The Role of Multimodality Imaging and Optimized Medical Therapy.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a life-threatening, idiopathic form of heart failure with a highly variable recovery trajectory. While normalization of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is frequently achieved, identifying residual myocardial injury and subclinical dysfunction remains a significant diagnostic challenge. A 25-year-old woman presented with acute heart failure seven weeks postpartum, following a pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. Initial multimodality imaging revealed severe biventricular dysfunction (LVEF 14%, right ventricular ejection fraction 17%), intracav

Oxidative Stress and Ultrastructural Analysis in Heart, Aorta, Skeletal Muscle and Lung of Rats Treated with N-Acetylcysteine or Rutin After Sprint Running.

Background: Sprinting, a high-intensity, short-duration exercise, induces oxidative stress. This causes molecular and ultrastructural alterations. Antioxidant supplementation may mitigate side effects of near or complete exhaustion. Methods: Twenty-eight healthy male adult rats received orally normal saline, carboxymethylcellulose (vehicle), artificial, N-acetylcysteine or a natural antioxidant, Rutin. Rats were subjected to treadmill sprinting at increasing speeds for 5 days/week. After 26 days, samples were collected to measure oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, MDA; the ratio of reduced-to-
