Radiographic Measurement of Displacement in Acetabular Fractures: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVES: To report methods of measurement of radiographic displacement and radiographic outcomes in acetabular fractures described in the literature. METHODS: A systematic review of the English literature was performed using EMBASE and Medline in August 2014. Inclusion criteria were studies of operatively treated acetabular fractures in adults with acute (<6 weeks) open reduction and internal fixation that reported radiographic outcomes. Exclusion criteria included case series with <10 patients, fractures managed >6 weeks from injury, acute total hip arthroplasty, periprosthetic fractures,

Anterior instability in the throwing shoulder.

The disabled throwing shoulder is a multifactorial problem. Laxity of the glenohumeral joint is necessary to achieve a satisfactory velocity. Normal wear and tear with throwing may convert this normal amount of excessive translation into instability. Instability in the throwing athlete manifests itself in 2 forms: traumatic anterior instability that happens to occur in a throwing athlete and excessive anterior subluxation because of overuse that occurs in conjunction with the disabled throwing shoulder. In most cases, it is difficult to determine by physical examination or imaging how much lax

Dance-related concussion: a case series.

Sport-related concussion is a topic of increasing public and media attention; the medical literature on this topic is growing rapidly. However, to our knowledge no published papers have described concussion specifically in the dancer. This case series involved a retrospective chart review at a large teaching hospital over a 5.5-year period. Eleven dancers (10 female, 1 male) were identified who experienced concussions while in dance class, rehearsal, or performance: 2 in classical ballet, 2 in modern dance, 2 in acro dance, 1 in hip hop, 1 in musical theater, and 3 were unspecified. Dancers we

Postural stability and ankle sprain history in athletes compared to uninjured controls.

BACKGROUND: Diminished postural stability is a risk factor for ankle sprain occurrence and ankle sprains result in impaired postural stability. To date, ankle sprain history has not been taken into account as a determinant of postural stability, while it could possibly specify subgroups of interest. METHODS: Postural stability was compared between 18 field hockey athletes who had recovered from an ankle sprain (mean (SD); 3.6 (1.5) months post-injury), and 16 uninjured controls. Force plate and kinematics parameters were calculated during single-leg standing: mean center of pressure speed, me

Case reports: acetabular damage after mild slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip problem in adolescents that results in a cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) deformity. Although the treatment for mild (slip angle of 0°-30°) and moderate (slip angle of 31°-60°) SCFE has historically been in situ fixation, recent studies have demonstrated impingement-related articular damage, irrespective of slip severity. Our series confirms previous reports that acetabular chondral injury occurs in mild to low-moderate (slip angle of ≤ 40°) SCFE. CASE DESCRIPTION: We retrospectively reviewed five patients who und

The effects of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage on running kinematics at different speeds.

This study investigated the effects of knee localised muscle damage on running kinematics at varying speeds. Nineteen young women (23.2 ± 2.8 years; 164 ± 8 cm; 53.6 ± 5.4 kg), performed a maximal eccentric muscle damage protocol (5 × 15) of the knee extensors and flexors of both legs at 60 rad · s(-1). Lower body kinematics was assessed during level running on a treadmill at three speeds pre- and 48 h after. Evaluated muscle damage indices included isometric torque, muscle soreness and serum creatine kinase activity. The results revealed that all indices changed significantly after exercise,

Common and less common peripheral nerve disorders associated with diabetes.

Diabetes can be associated with a number of peripheral nerve disorders. The commonest is slowly-progressive axonal distal symmetrical sensori-motor neuropathy. Sensory loss and positive sensory symptoms are its main manifestations. Lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (LSRPN) is a distinct entity, accompanied by severe lumbar, hip, leg pain and weight loss, with subsequent weakness. Although typically unilateral, bilaterality is described, with spontaneous recovery usual over several months. The upper limb counterpart, cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy is rare. Acute painful neuropathies, in

Ischemia of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve during periacetabular osteotomy using Smith-Petersen approach.

BACKGROUND: Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury is a common complication in the Smith-Petersen approach to the hip. This complication may be induced by neural ischemia or direct trauma during the procedure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the neural ischemia of LFCN and postoperative sensory disturbance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients who underwent periacetabular osteotomy through the Smith-Petersen approach were investigated. To evaluate neural ischemia, we measured the blood flow of LFCN using a laser Doppler flowmetry. The measureme

Early microvascular and macrovascular dysfunction is not accompanied by structural arterial injury in polycystic ovary syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: During the last decade cardiovascular risk factors and endothelial dysfunction have been shown to be present early in life in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The aim of the present study was a global assessment of abnormalities in the arterial bed of young women with PCOS by non-invasive, reproducible methods. DESIGN: 27 women with PCOS and 27 control women of comparable age, body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio were studied. Macrovascular function was assessed by flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) on the brachial artery. Nitrate-induced dilatation (NID) was performed to

Dynamic versus static analyses of lifting a box from the floor.

Lifting objects from below knee height has been implicated as a source of low back pain and injury. Static models have often been used to assess forces produced in the lumbar region by lifting; however, inertial forces generated by acceleration may be significant. Therefore, the goal of this investigation was to assess differences between static and dynamic analysis methods. Sagittal plane kinematics were collected on 21 men and 22 women of college age while lifting a milk crate (men = 25 kg, women = 15 kg) from the floor to standing knuckle height on level as well as sloped (facing uphill and
