Model for Calculating Impact Force for Individualized Hip Fracture Prediction During a Fall.

Osteoporotic-related weakening of bone is a common cause of hip fractures. The standard of care for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis is the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry bone mineral density T-scores. Many individuals considered nonosteoporotic, however, still sustain fractures since these tools do not incorporate vital bone parameters and subject-specific characteristics. The purpose of this work was to (1) develop a simple analytical model for estimating the force exerted on the femur during a fall (i.e., impact force) based on measurable patient metrics and (2) define a quant

Implementation of Vital Signs Detection Algorithm for Supervising the Evacuation of Individuals with Special Needs.

The article describes a system for monitoring the vital parameters of evacuated individuals, integrating three key functionalities: pulse detection, verification of wristband contact with the skin, and motion recognition. For pulse detection, the system employs the MAX30102 optical sensor and a signal processing algorithm presented in the study. The algorithm is based on spectral analysis using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and incorporates a nonparametric estimator of the probability density function (PDF) in the form of Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). This developed real-time algorithm e

Effects of whole-body cryostimulation on spinal and shoulder range of motion in individuals with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Flexibility and mobility are essential components of physical fitness, impacting joint function and musculoskeletal health. Individuals with obesity often exhibit restricted range of motion (ROM), exacerbated by muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and altered posture. Whole-body cryostimulation (WBC), involving exposure to low temperatures, has shown promise in alleviating inflammation and improving physical performance. This study evaluates the acute and short-term effects of WBC combined with rehabilitation on spinal and shoulder ROM in individuals with obesity. METHODS: This no

Psychological Responses Among Individuals Undergoing Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Surgery.

This study elucidated how previous surgery experience, coping, and optimism influenced the mood of patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Additionally, it examined the relationships among age, preoperative mood, and postoperative mood. Sixty-four patients (n = 42 men, n = 22 women; age range = 18-51 y) who underwent ACL reconstruction surgery at one hospital in western Japan completed questionnaires before and after surgery. Results revealed that patients who underwent previous ACL reconstruction surgery reported higher tension-anxiety (P < .01) and tot

Heightened protective decision-making related to physical, but not cognitive, effort in individuals with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition involving widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. Evidence-based interventions for fibromyalgia, such as education and exercise, often require prolonged, cognitive and/or physical effort, involving immediate costs (effort) for delayed benefits (improved pain/function). Initiation of, and adherence to, these interventions is often difficult, which may reflect pain-related alterations in an individual's attitudes towards effortful and delayed rewards. Here we explored whether individuals with fibromyalgia differed from age- and sex-matched pain-fr

Assessing working memory function in individuals with fibromyalgia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by wide-spread nonspecific pain. In conjunction with pain, individuals also commonly report experiencing a loss of mental clarity, more colloquially referred to as "fibro-fog". Fibro-fog is subjectively described as one of the most debilitating aspects of the condition, with subjective memory complaints being of high concern. Despite this, research has only recently begun to explore the effects of fibromyalgia in cognition more broadly. However, this research is limited by small samples and a focus on cognition as a broader construct. Thus, to further

A hierarchical network model for the estimate of the energy expenditure in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is impacted by many medical conditions, such as diabetes. In the case of type 1 diabetes (T1D), individuals need to have an accurate assessment of the energy expenditure in real-time to avoid dietary imbalance, and improve glycemic control. This work proposes a hierarchical Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based modeling approach to predict real-time continuous energy expenditure, expressed as metabolic equivalents (METs), for individuals with T1D on a 24-hour basis by leveraging the step count and heart rate data from a wrist-band smartwatch. To deal with th

No Effect of Topical Application of a Commercial Magnesium Gel on Exercise Recovery in Active Individuals.

Oral magnesium supplementation can reduce muscle soreness and muscle damage markers after unaccustomed exercise. However, the effectiveness of topical magnesium applications remains unclear. This randomized, double-blind, parallel-design study investigated whether a commercial magnesium gel could reduce the perception of muscle soreness and muscle damage markers following an acute bout of unaccustomed exercise. Healthy active participants (n = 35) performed a 40-min bout of downhill treadmill running. Magnesium (Mg) or placebo (Pla) gels were administered to each thigh 10 min before and immedi

Individualizing NSAID therapy in axial spondyloarthritis: N-of-1 trials with Bayesian analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease predominantly affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints. NSAIDs are first-line therapy, but individual responses vary widely. We evaluated the efficacy and patient preference of three NSAIDs (celecoxib, meloxicam and naproxen) through Bayesian N-of-1 clinical trials to optimize axSpA management. METHODS: We conducted N-of-1 trials with 42 patients meeting ASAS criteria for axSpA. Each patient was asked to complete two cycles of randomized double-blind crossover comparisons of the three NSAIDs, each for 4 weeks. The p

Blunted exercise hyperemic response to lower limb exercise in individuals with Down syndrome.

Autonomic dysfunction is common in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Coordination of autonomic function is essential for appropriate peripheral blood flow delivery and blood pressure (BP) regulation during lower limb dynamic exercise. Our purpose was to examine the effects of lower limb dynamic exercise on femoral blood flow (FaBF) and BP to both active and inactive limbs at both relative and absolute intensities in individuals with and without DS. Twenty-four individuals with DS (24 ± 5 yr; 30.3 ± 6.2 kg/m2) and 24 individuals without DS (25 ± 4 yr; 26.5 ± 4.5 kg/m2) performed five knee ex

Identifying Inter-Individual Differences in Cognitive Decline Using the Brain Connectome in Osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Osseous structures have been recognized as an endocrine organ that bidirectionally interacts with the brain. Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic endocrine disorder linked to neurodegenerative disorders. This bone-brain axis interdependence highlights the necessity of cognitive monitoring in OP management to detect early neurodegeneration markers, particularly given individual variability in brain reserve that may predispose patients to accelerated cognitive decline. PURPOSE: To investigate the individual differences in functional connectome and its association with cognitive ability i

The Impact of Step Therapy on Individuals with Psoriatic Disease in the USA: Patient and Provider Perspectives.

The management of psoriatic disease has been revolutionized by biologic medications in recent years. Despite their efficacy and safety, patients are often required by insurance plans in the USA or national formulary guidelines in other countries to try and fail other treatments first, which is a strategy called step therapy. Originally designed to contain costs of specialty drugs, step therapy has a number of negative impacts on patients and providers, both personally and clinically. This article is coauthored by a patient with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis who navigated step therapy. She

Development of polymerase chain reaction assays specific for individual pathogenic Aeromonas species.

The genus Aeromonas, a group of Gram-negative bacilli, inhabits a wide variety of aquatic environments, including rivers, lakes, and coastal seas. Among Aeromonas species, A. hydrophila, A. caviae, A. veronii, and A. dhakensis are clinically important species that cause infections in humans, leading to diarrhea associated with gastroenteritis, necrotizing fasciitis, and sepsis. A. dhakensis is a newly established species that was reclassified in 2013, and it is considered more pathogenic than other Aeromonas species. However, accurate identification of Aeromonas species by biochemical characte

Subphenotype-Dependent Benefits of Bariatric Surgery for Individuals at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment option for individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, whether outcomes in subtypes of individuals at risk for T2D and/or comorbidities (Tübingen Clusters) differ, is unknown. Of these, cluster 5 (C5) and cluster 6 (C6) are high-risk clusters for developing T2D and/or comorbidities, while cluster 4 (C4) is a low-risk cluster. We investigated bariatric surgery outcomes, hypothesizing that high-risk clusters benefit most due to great potential for metabolic improvement. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We allocated participants
