This study describes the results of examination of blood cultures from infants born in a community with a high prevalence of fatal amniotic fluid infection. The incidence of first-week neonatal septicaemia was 5.5 per 1000 births. Septicaemia was detected in 38% within 12 hours and 75.6% within 72 hours of birth. The aetiological pattern of the septicaemia was similar to that of fatal amniotic fluid infections. The increase in mortality from septicaemia occurred in infants born after 34 weeks of gestation. All children with evidence of xerophthalmia who were admitted to an inpatient facility for treatment of severe protein-calorie malnutrition … retarded in growth than those with minimal ocular signs. All inpatients had high rates of bacterial infections, regardless of their vitamin status. However, xerophthalmic children had a highly significant increase in the rate of positive urine cultures. Mortality rates were similar in all study groups.

Acyclovir is a new antiviral agent which is highly active against herpesviruses in vitro and in laboratory animals. Twenty-three cancer patients with cutaneous and/or systemic herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections were treated with parenteral acyclovir. All had received previous specific treatment for their malignant disease and ten had undergone bone-marrow transplantation. Urinary tract infections are problems in both men and women in the geriatric age group, although causative factors in each sex differ widely. Diagnostic evaluation is directed at determining obstructive disease in men and underlying anatomic abnormalities in both men and women. Bacteriologic diagnosis is important, and localization studies are often helpful. Antibiotic therapy is guided by the usual standards, with special awareness of the greater incidence of chronic or degenerative disease in older patients.

Six cases of bacteremia associated with genitourinary (GU) tract infections in adults due to Haemophilus influenzae occurred during a 42-month period at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Canada. This review is intended to remind physicians of exotic infections with latency of at least one year that could cause illness in refugees or US citizens exposed in Southeast Asia. Tuberculosis, melioidosis, and leprosy are the major chronic infections of bacterial origin. Intestinal protozoa, roundworms, and flatworms are considered with regard to pathogenic, potential and duration of infection. Malaria, filariasis, and schistosomiasis may be seen on occasion. Paragonimiasis and Chinese liver fluke infections are more common and may simulate other less exotic diseases.

The microflora of normal skin in 16 patients with repeated staphylococcal and streptococcal skin infections was examined to determine whether abnormalities existed which would indicate a protective role for the indigenous flora against colonization by pathogens.
