Lactobacillus-containing probiotics and clinical pregnancy in infertile women undergoing ART: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Lactobacillus-containing probiotics improve clinical pregnancy in infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD420251149619). PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from Jan 1, 2005, to Oct 31, 2025 for full-text randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in infertile adult women undergoing ART that compared Lactobacillus-containing probiotics (vaginal or oral) with placebo or no supplementation before standard ART care. Two reviewers independently screened records, e

Lead concentration in follicular fluid of infertile patients with and without endometriosis: a propensity score matching exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study sought to provide initial insights into lead concentrations within the follicular fluid of infertile patients with and without endometriosis, tentatively observing any potential links between lead presence and the condition. Furthermore, we attempted to discern whether these levels might show a possible correlation with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory retrospective observational case-control study at the Fertility Unit of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, utilizing propensity score matching to compare fol

Integrating multi-omics and network toxicology to identify FIS1 as a key target of environmental pollutants in male infertility.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility (MI) impacts about one in seven couples globally, involving complex gene-environment interactions. Environmental pollutants may disrupt spermatogenesis via mitochondrial dysfunction, but key targets and mechanisms are unclear. Integrating multi-omics with computational toxicology offers a novel strategy to decipher these interactions. METHODS: We integrated blood transcriptomics from MI patients, GWAS summary statistics, and QTL data (methylation, expression, protein). MI-related mitochondrial genes were identified through differential expression analysis, followe…

Exploring the psychological implications of infertility among IVF parents in Uganda using the transactional theory of stress and coping.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is on the rise among couples of reproductive age globally. In Uganda, while the prevalence of infertility has varied in recent studies due to differences in definitions and measures used, there is growing evidence for risks faced by those directly affected. The experiences and impact of involuntary infertility among the affected individuals and/or couples in Uganda have however not been extensively examined. This study examined the experiences of infertility before a decision to do In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) among individuals or couples who successfully had children…

Analysis of influencing factors for social avoidance and distress among infertile patients based on LASSO and XGBoost algorithms.

OBJECTIVE: Infertility negatively impacts mental health and quality of life, with social avoidance and distress (SAD) being a key but underrecognized issue. This study aims to analyze SAD risk factors in infertility patients. METHODS: A retrospective study of 205 infertility patients (October 2022-July 2025) was divided into SAD (n = 93) and non-SAD (n = 112) groups. LASSO regression and XGBoost identified key variables, followed by logistic regression and ROC analysis. RESULTS: Significant differences (P < 0.05) were found in age, education, residence, income, infertility stigma scale (ISS)…

Mosquito-borne viruses and male infertility: Zika was just the beginning - the impact of dengue on sperm DNA integrity.

Dengue is resurging globally (~14 million cases in 2024). Emerging evidence suggests that dengue infection may transiently impair male fertility. Acute dengue has been associated with reversible declines in sperm count, with potential increases in sperm DNA fragmentation, possibly mediated by fever-induced oxidative stress. We review dengue's effects on sperm, compare them with Zika's impact, and highlight implications for fertility counseling.

Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus as an Etiology of Anejaculation and Primary Male Infertility: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is becoming increasingly prevalent among young men. While DM is known to cause a myriad of health issues ranging from cardiovascular complications to vision loss, its impact on male reproductive health is often unrecognized. In this review, our primary objective is to summarize the literature linking DM and male infertility. We highlight a representative case of a young man who was seen in our clinic for infertility and was ultimately newly diagnosed with DM. Neurovascular changes in diabetic men can gradually lead to the development of sexual dysfunction. DM can also di…

Quality of life and risk for mood disorders in infertile patients across sexes and stages of assisted reproductive technology.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) can affect quality of life and psychological well-being in both female and male patients, but stage-specific patterns across different stages of IVF cycle remain incompletely characterized. We examined sex differences and stage-specific variation in fertility-related quality of life (FertiQoL) and psychological distress measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). We analyzed 444 paired FertiQoL and PHQ-4 responses from 320 patients (202 females and 118 males) undergoing IVF at 11 centers in Taiwan. Assessments were available before IVF initiation, ovu

Distribution and trends of the global burden of female infertility attributable to sexually transmitted infections from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) contribute to female infertility by causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and fallopian tube damage. Utilizing the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, we aim to comprehensively evaluate the global disease burden and spatiotemporal trends of STIs-related infertility, which is critical for formulating targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: Using data from the GBD 2021 database, we extracted age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR) and age-specific prevalences (in 5-year intervals from 15 to 49 years) for STIs-related primary infert…

Infertility is a condition that affects a significant percentage of couples globally, affecting their social and psychological well-being. It disrupts many aspects of life, influencing individuals' social and psychological experiences. The primary causes of infertility are diverse and include endogenous factors, various psychological variables, congenital or acquired disorders in females, and genetic and hormonal issues in males. In females, implantation failure is a key obstacle to successful embryo implantation, with poor endometrial receptivity being a major contributing factor. Several met…
