OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively compare nuclear size of epithelial cells in type I intestinal metaplasia (IM) from various pathologic lesions of gastric mucosa.

Four cases of intestinal volvulus in German shepherd dogs are described. A definitive diagnosis was achieved by exploratory laparotomy in three cases and after necropsy in the remaining animal. Clinical signs, laboratory investigations and radiological changes are reported for three of the dogs. These dogs were all euthanased. Treatment of complete intestinal volvulus is difficult. By the time the condition is diagnosed, the pathological changes are irreversible, with consequent poor prognosis.

In this experimental study, the effects of an antihelminthic and immunostimulating agent (levamisole) on anastomosis recovery in transfused and normal guinea pigs were investigated. A total of 56 animals were divided into four groups of 14 each; an additional 10 were employed for blood transfusion (BT). To confirm the usefulness of Dai-kenchu-to for intestinal obstruction, investigation of the effects of Dai-kenchu-to on postoperative intestinal adhesion was conducted. The authors reported a 56-year-old man, who suffered from repeated massive gastrointestinal bleeding. The source of the bleeding was leiomyoma of the ileum. Abdominal computertomography and selective enterography confirmed the tumour's localisation. After partial resection of the ileum the patient had no more complaints.

Nitric oxide (NO) synthesis is markedly augmented in states of inflammation, largely due to the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Although NO has anti-inflammatory consequences under basal conditions, it remains enigmatic as to why NO displays proinflammatory characteristics in chronic inflammation. The new immunosuppressive agent, SDZ-RAD, and its analog rapamycin were examined for intestinal absorption, metabolism, and bioavailability in Wistar rats. Intestinal first-pass metabolism studies from rat jejunum showed that at 0.5 mg of SDZ-RAD/kg rat, 50% of the parent compound was metabolized in the intestinal mucosa, and this decreased to around 30% when SDZ-RAD was increased to 5.0 mg/kg rat. HISTORY: A 32-year-old man had ten years previously undergone several laparotomies for recurrent ileus of the small intestine. They revealed severe intestinal oedema and histology showed hyperplasia of the lymphatic system but the aetiology was unclear. After a 10-year interval free of symptoms he presented with marked hypoproteinaemic oedema and exudative enteropathy the cause of which was to be clarified by exploratory laparotomy with excision of lymph nodes and a small section of small intestine.

Absence of ganglion cells in the small intestine, a rare form of Hirschsprung's disease, is a condition found in newborns and associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
