Effect of an Exercise Program That Includes Deadlifts on Low Back Pain.

Clinical Scenario: Low back pain is a common condition for the general population with 29% of adults having low back pain within the last 3 months. A deadlift is described as a free weight exercise in which a barbell is lifted from the floor in a continuous motion by extending the knees and hips. For those without low back pain, the deadlift was found to have the highest muscle activation of paraspinal musculature compared with other exercises. There are a limited number of studies that investigate the usefulness of incorporating deadlifts as part of a rehabilitation program for low back pain.

Effect of Joint Friction Compensation on a "Muscle-First" Motor-Assisted Hybrid Neuroprosthesis.

This study assessed the metabolic energy consumption of walking with the external components of a "Muscle-First" Motor Assisted Hybrid Neuroprosthesis (MAHNP), which combines implanted neuromuscular stimulation with a motorized exoskeleton. The "Muscle-First" approach prioritizes generating motion with the wearer's own muscles via electrical stimulation with the actuators assisting on an as-needed basis. The motorized exoskeleton contributes passive resistance torques at both the hip and knee joints of 6Nm and constrains motions to the sagittal plane. For the muscle contractions elicited by ne

The Effect of Head Loading on Cervical Spine in Manual Laborers.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case-control study. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of axial loading on the cervical spine when weights are carried on the head. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Traditionally, carrying weights on the head has been a common practice in developing countries. The laborers working in agriculture, construction, and other industries, as well as porters at railway platforms, are required to lift heavy weights. Since controversy exists regarding carrying weights on the head, we decided to evaluate its effect on the cervical spine. METHODS: The study comprised 62 subjects. Of th

A novel abdominal wall entry suction device to increase Veress needle safety: A prospective cohort pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In laparoscopic surgery, the Veress needle technique is most often used to initiate a pneumoperitoneum. Although low, entry-related injuries of the intestines and major vascular structures occur in 0.04-0.1% of cases. Up to 50% of these injuries remain undiagnosed at the time of surgery, resulting in mortality rates between 2.5 and 30%. In an effort to minimize such injuries we objectively assessed a novel abdominal wall entry suction device (AWESD) that was hypothesized to lift the abdominal wall and create an additional post-peritoneum safe margin for safer Veress needle introduc

MAPGI: Accurate identification of anatomical landmarks and diseased tissue in gastrointestinal tract using deep learning.

Automatic detection of anatomical landmarks and diseases in medical images is a challenging task which could greatly aid medical diagnosis and reduce the cost and time of investigational procedures. Also, two particular challenges of digital image processing in medical applications are the sparsity of annotated medical images and the lack of uniformity across images and image classes. This paper presents methodologies for maximizing classification accuracy on a small medical image dataset, the Kvasir dataset, by performing robust image preprocessing and applying state-of-the-art deep learning.

Extremely large sweep amplitude enables high wing loading in giant hovering insects.

Beetle Allomyrina dichotoma is one of the largest insects that performs many remarkable modes of locomotion, particularly hovering flight capability. In order to stay airborne, its flexible hindwings are flapped so as to work as a thrust generator. However, the wing loading of the beetle is relatively large (38.94  ±  3.73 N m-2) compared to those of other insects and hummingbirds, indicating that it is challenging for it to achieve flight. Here, we measured the hindwing morphology and kinematics of the beetle in order to discover its flight performance. Unlike many other insects, the beetle f

Gait stride-to-stride variability and foot clearance pattern analysis in Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease and Vascular Parkinsonism.

The literature on gait analysis in Vascular Parkinsonism (VaP), addressing issues such as variability, foot clearance patterns, and the effect of levodopa, is scarce. This study investigates whether spatiotemporal, foot clearance and stride-to-stride variability analysis can discriminate VaP, and responsiveness to levodopa. Fifteen healthy subjects, 15 Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (IPD) patients and 15 VaP patients, were assessed in two phases: before (Off-state), and one hour after (On-state) the acute administration of a suprathreshold (1.5 times the usual) levodopa dose. Participants were

Manikin Laryngoscopy Motion as a Predictor of Patient Intubation Outcomes: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to determine whether motion parameters during laryngoscopy in a manikin differed with experienced operators versus novice trainees and whether motion measurements would predict trainee outcomes when intubating patients. METHODS: Motion, force, and duration of laryngoscopy on a manikin were compared in two separate experiments between beginning anesthesiology residents (CA1) and anesthesiologists with more than 24 months of anesthesiology training (CA3 or attendings). In one experiment, CA1 residents were also evaluated for the percentage of their laryngo
