BACKGROUND: Fungal diseases are still not well known in many countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, around 5.4 % of people suffer from a serious fungal disease each year. Their occurrence is higher in immunocompromised patients and those with respiratory diseases. A good level of knowledge and management practice of care providers contributes to reducing morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Emergomycosis, an emerging dimorphic fungal infection caused by Emergomyces species, primarily affects immunocompromised individuals. Emergomyces orientalis has been reported in China, including rare cases in immunocompetent individuals. Diagnosis remains challenging due to the lack of typical clinical manifestations and radiological features. Co-infection with other pathogens further complicates management, with no prior global reports of concurrent E. orientalis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections.

Burns are among the most devastating traumatic injuries. The primary risk of infection stems from disruption of the primary barrier, the skin. For patients with deep burns, loss of the dermis is the main risk factor for systemic bacterial and fungal infections, which occur in 70% and 20%-25% of cases, respectively. BACKGROUND: Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been considered a harmless yeast, but in recent years, increasing evidence has shown that it can cause disease in humans, especially invasive infections in infants/children and vulvovaginal infections in women. This study aimed to investigate the clinical information and antifungal susceptibility of clinical cases with S. cerevisiae and establish a foundation for the prevention and treatment of fungal infections.

PURPOSE: To report 2 patients with colonization of therapeutic contact lens with dematiaceous fungi.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: The first patient had a retained soft contact lens on an opaque cornea for 4 years with brownish black multiple colonies on the soft contact lens and culture grew Bipolaris spp. The second patient was on therapeutic contact lens for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy for 4 months and developed a brownish colonization of contact lens with unidentified dematiaceous fungi. Both the patients had conjunctivitis but did not develop fungal keratitis.
