Drowning in a high-income developing country in the Middle East: newspapers as an essential resource for injury surveillance.

Despite frequent media accounts of drownings in the United Arab Emirates, little was known about the epidemiology and prevention of such incidents. The research objective was to assess newspapers as a national source on incidence, activities, and risk factors for drowning in this high-income media-rich developing country where official sources do not include sufficient variables for injury prevention. The three main national English and six Arabic newspapers were assessed for electronic retrieval of incidents, which proved impractical; however, the largest English-language paper maintained a c

Health concerns of migrant backstretch workers at horse racetracks.

BACKGROUND: Backstretch workers are part of an itinerant labor community that cares for horses at racetracks across the U.S. Since the 1970s, this workforce has increasingly been composed of migrants, especially from Mexico and Guatemala. No studies have focused systematic attention on health concerns of this population and how illness is influenced by unique working and living conditions. METHODS: We administered a survey orally to 84 backstretch workers at a Florida racetrack to understand self-reported medical history and current major health concerns. RESULTS: The most frequent responses

Job stress and needlestick injuries in nurses: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of needlestick injuries (NSIs) in nurses employed in Emergency Departments (EDs) represents a special issue for healthcare organizations globally. Stressful working conditions, lack of organizational arrangements and lack of supporting one another at work, may contribute to increase the risk of NSIs. METHODS: We conducted an observational study to analyze: 1) the effectiveness of organizational interventions to minimize the occurrence of NSIs in ED nurses; 2) to measure the impact of such interventions on the safety budget. RESULTS: The occurrence of NSIs detected

Performers With History of Voice Injury: A Survey Study of Treatment Outcomes and Vocal Function.

INTRODUCTION: Past studies show that performers are more susceptible to voice injury, have higher incidence of injury, and experience greater vocal impairment than non-performers. Despite literature demonstrating otherwise, there remains fear and stigma that voice injury is a career-ending circumstance. Much of this is due to a lack of information about post-treatment vocal function. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was distributed via email, flyer, and social media to a target audience of performers with a history of voice injury. It inquired about occupation, vocal symptoms, professional

Disease Risk Perception and Safety Practices: A Survey of Australian Flying Fox Rehabilitators.

Interactions with flying foxes pose disease transmission risks to volunteer rehabilitators (carers) who treat injured, ill, and orphaned bats. In particular, Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) can be transmitted directly from flying foxes to humans in Australia. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and rabies vaccination can be used to protect against lyssavirus infection. During May and June 2014, active Australian flying fox carers participated in an online survey (SOAR: Survey Of Australian flying fox Rehabilitators) designed to gather demographic data, assess perceptions of disease risk, and

Nurses failure to appreciate the risks of infection due to needle stick accidents: a hospital based survey.

One of the most important occupational risks to healthcare workers is exposure is to blood-borne viruses. This study examined nurses' perceptions of risk of contracting infection following single or multiple exposure to blood or body fluids. Two hundred and ninety nurses were surveyed using a questionnaire. One hundred and thirty-three responded; 85 worked in higher risk areas (ITU, Haematology, Haemodialysis and Neonatal Surgical Units) (Group A) and 48 worked in lower risk areas (medical wards, an orthopaedic and an ENT ward) (Group B). Forty-nine percent of subjects from group A and 60% of
