Sarcomas in north west England: III. Survival.

Survival data on a population-based series of bone, soft tissue and visceral sarcomas diagnosed in the North West of England between 1982-84 and subjected to histopathological peer review are presented. Five-year crude survival for all cases was 34%. Survival in males and females did not differ significantly (P = 0.6, 5-year survival 32% vs 36%) but was markedly worse for patients diagnosed over the median age of 60 years, even when allowance was made for underlying mortality (P = 0.03, 34% vs 44%). Five-year survival rates for the major site groups were: bone 44%; soft tissues of head, neck a

Rorschach evaluation of adolescent bulimics.

It has become apparent that the excessive dieting engaged in by many girls when they reach puberty frequently serves as an impetus for the later development of eating disorders. While the existence of bulimia nervosa has been well documented in late-adolescent girls, only minimal research has been devoted to delineating the personality characteristics that distinguish bulimics from normal adolescents. The present study utilized the Rorschach to contrast 12 DSM-III-R diagnosed adolescent bulimics with 12 female adolescent controls. Exner's (1986) Comprehensive System was used for scoring the pr

The protein paradox, carnivore diet & hypertrophy versus longevity. Short term nutrition and hypertrophy versus longevity.

Meat consumption has been a common food selection for humans for millennia. Meat is rich in amino acids, delivers vast amounts of nutrients and assists in short term health and hypertrophy. However, meat consumption can induce the activation of mTOR and IGF-1, accelerated aging, vascular constriction, atherosclerosis, heart disease, increased risk of diabetes, systemic inflammatory effects, cancers (including colorectal and prostate cancers), advanced glycation end products, impaired immune function / increased susceptibility to infection via downstream advanced glycation end product accumulat

Effectiveness of a home-based physical exercise intervention in patients with fragility fractures on functional independence and hospital readmissions: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with fragility fractures are two times as likely to suffer future fractures as their peers who have not suffered a fracture. In addition, 40% of those who suffer fragility fractures do not recover their level of functioning in terms of activities of daily living after 1 year. The present study aims to verify the hypothesis that a semipersonalised home-based exercise intervention may improve patients' independence and reduce the number of hospital admissions compared with usual care for a population that suffers fragility fractures. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This parallel-ar

Improved Hemodynamic Recovery and 72-Hour Survival Following Low-Volume Resuscitation with a PEGylated Carboxyhemoglobin in a Rat Model of Severe Hemorrhagic Shock.

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhage is a leading cause of death from potentially survivable civilian and military trauma. As projected conflicts move from settings of tactical and logistical supremacy to hyper-dynamic tactical zones against peer and near-peer adversaries, protracted medical evacuation times are expected. Treatment at the point-of-injury is critical. Although crystalloids like Lactated Ringer's (LR) are ubiquitous, whole blood (WB) is the preferred resuscitation fluid following hemorrhage; however, logistical constraints limit the availability of WB in prehospital settings. Evaluation of the Ronnie Gardiner Method in individuals with stroke in the late phase of recovery: a protocol for a single-blind multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a prevalent neurological condition that frequently results in long-term disabilities and considerable societal costs. While existing rehabilitation approaches provide some benefits, residual motor impairments often persist and become permanent, leading to ongoing activity restrictions. Music-based intervention, such as the Ronnie Gardiner Method (RGM), adheres to best practice principles of stroke rehabilitation by simultaneously engaging motor, sensory, cognitive and emotional functions, potentially offering enhanced recovery outcomes. However, research examining its eff

Efficacy and safety of risk-stratified chemotherapy with azacitidine for children with myeloid leukaemia with Down syndrome: protocol for a multicentre phase II trial (JCCG AML-D24).

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of myeloid leukaemia associated with Down syndrome (ML-DS) is excellent with reduced-intensity chemotherapy; however, that of refractory or relapsed ML-DS remains dismal. These contrasting outcomes highlight the importance of risk-stratified therapy, based on reliable prognostic factors, to prevent treatment-related mortality and relapse. In addition, novel therapeutic strategies capable of overcoming the poor prognosis of high-risk patients are eagerly anticipated. Based on the results of molecular analyses, in vitro functional assays and anecdotal case reports, az

Toward an integrated animal-human nutrition intelligence via agentic retrieval-augmented language models.

Animal-source foods are nutritionally "plastic," with fatty acid profiles, vitamins, and minerals that can be altered by animal diets and management. Although the literature documenting these effects is extensive, it is fragmented across disciplines and experimental contexts, limiting translation into actionable guidance for food quality and human nutrition. We developed the Intelligent System for Integrating Global Human & Animal Health Technology (INSIGHT), a domain-specialized retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system designed to synthesize evidence across animal production and human nutr

Rationale and design of a multicentre randomised controlled trial on circulating tumour DNA-guided neoadjuvant treatment strategy for locally advanced rectal cancer (CINTS-R).

BACKGROUND: The traditional neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) combined with total mesorectal excision has been widely accepted as the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). New strategies such as total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) and neoadjuvant immunotherapy have shown great promise in certain patient populations. Currently, there is an urgent need to stratify patients before treatment to adopt the appropriate neoadjuvant strategies. Our previous study has shown that circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) effectively reflects tumour burden and genetic characteris

Spiritual care for prevention of psychological disorders in critically ill patients: study protocol of a feasibility randomised controlled pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of critically ill patients who survive their illness will experience new sequelae or a worsening of their baseline health status following their discharge from the hospital. These consequences may be physical, cognitive and/or psychological and have been labelled postintensive care syndrome (PICS). Prior research has demonstrated that spiritual care aligned with a specific creed during hospitalisation in the intensive care unit (ICU), as part of a comprehensive care plan, may be an effective strategy for preventing psychological sequelae in surviving critical

Efficacy of bilateral quadratus lumborum block with liposomal bupivacaine for post-cesarean analgesia: a protocol for an open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective postoperative pain management is essential for optimizing maternal comfort and recovery following cesarean delivery. However, achieving adequate analgesia remains a challenge due to suboptimal pain control and medication-related adverse effects. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of bilateral quadratus lumborum block using liposomal bupivacaine for post-cesarean analgesia. METHODS: This single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial will enroll 201 adult parturients undergoing lower segment transverse cesarean section. Participants will be randomized in a 1

Effectiveness of remote graded motor imagery therapy for patients with central sensitisation low back pain: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent global condition that significantly impairs quality of life, reduces work productivity and imposes substantial healthcare burdens. Approximately 70% of adults worldwide experience at least one episode of low back pain during their lifetime. Central sensitisation, a common complexity of CLBP, involves heightened responsiveness of the central nervous system, resulting in amplified neural signalling and increased pain sensitivity. This phenomenon suggests that pain in CLBP extends beyond purely biomedical origins, involving multiple factor

Clinical efficacy and therapeutic mechanism of active 'five-tone' speech therapy compared with conventional speech-language therapy for treatment of post-stroke aphasia: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Aphasia is a common dysfunction among patients with stroke that can severely affect daily life. Listening to the 'five-tone' melodies of traditional Chinese medicine can improve some of the language functions of patients with post-stroke aphasia; however, passive listening may limit its clinical efficacy. In this study, we transform the passive listening five-tone melodic therapy of traditional Chinese medicine into an active five-tone speech therapy. This randomised controlled trial aims to investigate the clinical efficacy of active five-tone speech therapy in the treatment of

Efficacy of an mHealth intervention to support pain self-management and improve analgesia in patients with rib fractures: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In light of the risks of over-reliance on opioid analgesia during recovery from rib fractures, there is increased interest in the efficacy of non-pharmacological approaches to pain management. This paper describes the protocol for a double-blind randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of an mHealth intervention for reducing pain intensity, pain-related distress and opioid use during early recovery from rib fractures. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Adults (N=120) with isolated rib fractures will be recruited within 24 hours of admission to a large public hospital in Sydney, A

Study protocol of a randomised controlled trial for the effectiveness of a functional partial body weight support treadmill training (FPBWSTT) on motor and functional skills of children with ataxia.

INTRODUCTION: A great heterogeneity characterises the paediatric population with ataxia, which has been studied poorly. The lack of postural control and coordination, in addition with features of the 'ataxic' gait are linked with functional limitations. Studies on physiotherapy interventions for children with ataxia are highly needed for identifying optimal training strategies for improving motor and functional related skills. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A stratified randomised control clinical trial of a 4-week functional partial body weight support treadmill training, (5 days/week 45 min/day) and
