Spatiotemporal gait parameters and tremor distribution in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Essential Tremor is characterized by an action tremor of the upper extremities, which may or may not be accompanied by a head, voice, leg or trunk tremor. Problems with gait and balance have also been identified in persons with Essential Tremor. Therefore, understanding gait performance is an important area of focus for clinicians and researchers. RESEARCH QUESTION: We sought to 1) conduct a factor analysis on a broad spectrum of spatiotemporal gait parameters 2) build upon the normative database of gait measures in persons with Essential Tremor 3) understand the influence of age

The Hoorn Diabetes Care System (DCS) cohort. A prospective cohort of persons with type 2 diabetes treated in primary care in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have a doubled morbidity and mortality risk compared with persons with normal glucose tolerance. Despite treatment, clinical targets for cardiovascular risk factors are not achieved. The Hoorn Diabetes Care System cohort (DCS) is a prospective cohort representing a comprehensive dataset on the natural course of T2D, with repeated clinical measures and outcomes. In this paper, we describe the design of the DCS cohort. PARTICIPANTS: The DCS consists of persons with T2D in primary care from the West-Friesland region of the Netherlands. Enrolment in the

Increased functional connectivity within mesocortical networks in open people.

Openness is a personality trait reflecting absorption in sensory experience, preference for novelty, and creativity, and is thus considered a driving force of human evolution. At the brain level, a relation between openness and dopaminergic circuits has been proposed, although evidence to support this hypothesis is lacking. Recent behavioral research has also found that people with mania, a psychopathological condition linked to dopaminergic dysfunctions, may display high levels of openness. However, whether openness is related to dopaminergic circuits has not been determined thus far. We addr

Risk factors for falls in HIV-infected persons.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of and risk factors for falls in HIV-1-infected persons are unknown. METHODS: Fall history during the prior 12 months, medical diagnoses, and functional assessments were collected on HIV-infected persons 45-65 years of age receiving effective antiretroviral therapy. Fall risk was evaluated using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS: Of 359 subjects, 250 persons (70%) reported no falls, 109 (30%) had ≥1 fall; and 66 (18%) were recurrent fallers. Females, whites, and smokers were more likely to be recurrent fallers (P ≤ 0.05). HIV-related character

Wavelet analysis of sacral tissue oxygenation oscillations by near-infrared spectroscopy in persons with spinal cord injury.

The objective of this study is to assess the blood oxygenation oscillations in the tissue over the sacrum, a high risk area for pressure ulcer, using spectral analysis of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) signals based on wavelet transform. A total of twenty subjects were recruited for this study, of which ten were persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) (3 women, 7 men, age=34.5±5.2years) and the other ten were healthy subjects (3 women, 7 men, age=36.5±6.2years). Waterlow Scale was used for the pressure ulcer risk assessment. External pressure of 26.6kPa (200mm Hg) was applied to the sacrum vi

[Insight and psychiatric dangerousness: A review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Violence committed by individuals with severe mental illness has become an increasing focus of concern among clinicians, policy makers, and the general public, often as the result of tragic events. Research has shown in the past two decades an increased risk of violence among patients with mental disorder. Nevertheless, of those suffering from mental illness, perpetrators of other directed violence form a minority subgroup. The means by which there is this association between mental illness and violence has remained controversial. Factors such as positive psychotic symptoms, medi

Using serum creatinine to estimate glomerular filtration rate: accuracy in good health and in chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: The National Kidney Foundation has advocated the use of the abbreviated Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from serum creatinine measurements in clinical laboratories. However, healthy persons were not included in the development of the MDRD equation. OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of the MDRD equation in patients with chronic kidney disease compared with healthy persons and to develop a new equation that uses both patients with chronic kidney disease and healthy persons. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING:

Inside the minds of football athletes: Examination of age, expertise, and gender disparities in personality traits.

Personality research holds a longstanding position in scientific exploration. Yet, there remains a significant gap in the study of personality characteristics of football athletes and their interaction with performance. Utilizing the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality we assessed personality traits of 2085 males and females. First, differences between football players and two comparison samples of students and inactives were analysed. Subsequently, a series of analyses examined variations within the football player group, considering expertise, age, and gender. Football players, in contras

Perfectionism in anorexia nervosa: Associations with clinical picture and personality traits.

Although many researchers addressed the topics, no consistent data are currently available regarding the relationship between perfectionism and personality traits in anorexia nervosa (AN). The present study aimed to assess differences between high- and low-perfectionism groups of patients with AN and to identify which variables show the strongest association with perfectionism. A group of inpatients with AN (n = 193) was recruited and completed a battery of self-report questionnaires regarding eating-related and general psychopathology, perfectionism, and personality. On the basis of perfectio

The Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Cervical Cancer Screening Using a Systematic Invitation System in Lithuania.

In Lithuania, cytological screening of cervical cancer (CC) is largely opportunistic. Absence of standardized systematic invitation practice might be the reason for low participation rates. The study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of systematic invitation approach in CC screening programme from the perspective of a healthcare provider. A decision tree was used to compare an opportunistic invitation by a family doctor, a personal postal invitation letter with appointment time and place, and a personal postal invitation letter with appointment time and place with one reminder letter. Clinical Assessment of Spasticity in People With Spinal Cord Damage: Recommendations From the Ability Network, an International Initiative.

A thorough assessment of the extent and severity of spasticity, and its effect on functioning, is central to the effective management of spasticity in persons with spinal cord damage (SCD). These individuals however do not always receive adequate assessment of their spasticity. Inadequate assessment compromises management when the effect of spasticity and/or need for intervention are not fully recognized. Assessment is also central to determining treatment efficacy. A barrier to spasticity assessment has been the lack of consensus on clinical and functional measures suitable for routine clinic

Daily Levels and Dynamic Metrics of Affective-Cognitive Constructs Associate With Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours in Adults After Psychiatric Hospitalization.

The period after psychiatric hospitalization is an extraordinarily high-risk period for suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs). Affective-cognitive constructs (ACCs) are salient risk factors for STBs, and intensive longitudinal metrics of these constructs may improve personalized risk detection and intervention. However, limited research has examined how within-person daily levels and between-person dynamic metrics of ACCs relate to STBs after hospital discharge. Adult psychiatric inpatients (N = 95) completed a 65-day ecological momentary assessment protocol after discharge as part of a 6-mo

Tuberculosis and Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection Screening Among Non-US-Born Persons in an Integrated Health System in California.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis infection (TBI) and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection disproportionately affect non-US-born persons. Early identification and treatment are critical to reduce transmission, morbidity, and mortality, but little is known about screening in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a large integrated California health system in September 2022 assessing TBI and HBV screening among persons aged ≥18 years who were born in countries with high TB burden (TB disease incidence rates ≥20/100 000 population) and/or HBV burden (hepatitis B surface

Nutrient intake differs among persons with celiac disease and gluten-related disorders in the United States.

Persons with celiac disease (CD) may develop nutritional deficiencies, while individuals following a gluten-free diet (GFD) may lack essential nutrients. We examined nutrient intake from diet and supplements among persons with CD and GFD in the cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009-2014. Among 15,610 participants 20 years and older, we identified CD based on positive serology for immunoglobulin A against tissue transglutaminase, health care provider diagnosis, and adherence to a GFD. People without CD avoiding gluten (PWAG) adhered to a GFD without a diagnosis
