Voluntary sports programs for individuals with mental health disorders: The trainer's view.

There is strong evidence that physical activities (PAs) are an important factor in increasing and maintaining mental health as well as in preventing relapse after mental health disorders. Physical activity is an important part of the treatment program in psychiatric hospitals. However, when individuals with mental health disorders (IMHD) leave the hospitals in Switzerland (CH), there are few possibilities to do physical activity in a given setting. One of them are voluntary sports groups for individuals with mental health disorders (SGPSY), which have been growing continuously in CH since 2016

Core eating disorder fears: Prevalence and differences in eating disorder fears across eating disorder diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Fear and anxiety are key maintaining factors for eating disorder (ED) pathology. Maladaptive fears lead to ED behaviors and avoidance, which provide temporary relief, but ultimately reinforce the fear and contribute to a cycle that maintains the ED. To date, fears of food and weight gain are the most explored fears underlying ED pathology. However, recently other important ED fears have been identified, including fears of social consequences and personal consequences. METHOD: The current study (N = 229 individuals with an ED) aimed to better characterize ED fears. Specifically, thi

An empirical study of psychosocial and clinical correlates of delusional disorder: the DELIREMP study.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe psychosocial and clinical correlates of delusional disorder (DD) and its types. This approach is important because most knowledge on DD does not come from empirical data collected using a validated systematic research method. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 86 patients fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for DD as established using the SCID-I. Variables were evaluated using a systematic methodology and standardized instruments, and included possible psychosocial risk factors (low socioeconomic status or social isolation, immigration, sensory

Association of Exposure to Infections in Childhood With Risk of Eating Disorders in Adolescent Girls.

IMPORTANCE: Infections are recognized as playing a critical role in the risk of psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior; however, few studies have evaluated the risk of eating disorders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of hospitalization for infections and treatment with anti-infective agents with the risk of an eating disorder diagnosis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide, population-based, prospective cohort study of 525 643 girls born from January 1, 1989, to December 31, 2006, and followed up until December 31, 2012, was conducted using individual-level data drawn

The use of electroconvulsive therapy in a cohort of forensic psychiatric patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In Denmark, over 2500 people are in psychiatric treatment in forensic mental health services at any one time, most suffering from schizophrenia. Many of them have illnesses that are resistant to medication. There is evidence of the effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for schizophrenia, but not explicitly for this complex forensic group. AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe the outcome of using ECT as augmentation therapy in a cohort of forensic psychiatric patients with schizophrenia who were failing to respond to antipsychotic medication. METHODS: In one univ

Prevalence of psychopathology in childhood epilepsy: categorical and dimensional measures.

Few studies have utilized both categorical and dimensional measures of psychopathology in children with epilepsy. We evaluated 173 children (88 males, 85 females; mean age 11.7y [SD 1.8]; range 9-14y) who had epilepsy (generalized 36%, partial 61%) for at least 6 months. The primary caregiver completed a dimensional measure, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and a categorical measure, either the Child Symptom Inventory (CSI) or the Adolescent Symptom Inventory (ASI). Correlation coefficients were computed between the CBCL scores and CSI/ASI symptom scores. For all children, diagnostic risk

Topiramate for anger control: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled anger while being most commonly associated with personality disorders could also be part of many other conditions such as chronic low back ache and post-traumatic stress disorder. The intensity of anger as an emotional state at a particular time is known as "State Anger," whereas how often angry feelings are experienced over time is known as "Trait Anger." Anger could also manifest as expression of anger toward other persons or objects in the environment (Anger-Out), holding in or suppressing angry feelings (Anger-In) and controlling angry feelings by preventing the ex

Childhood trauma, antisocial personality typologies and recent violent acts among inpatient males with severe mental illness: exploring an explanatory pathway.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of childhood trauma is elevated among individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) compared to the general population and associated with poor prognosis, substance misuse, lower treatment compliance and violence. Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) typologies (childhood vs adult onset) also represent possible mediating mechanisms to explain risk of violence among men with SMI. The current study aimed to explore an explanatory pathway linking childhood traumatic exposure, antisocial personality typologies and risk of violent behaviour among adult male inpatients with S

Homelessness and neuropsychological impairment: preliminary analysis of adults entering outpatient psychiatric treatment.

Homelessness has been associated with neuropsychological (NP) impairment, but few studies have adequately controlled for factors known to affect NP performance. We performed brief NP testing examining learning, recall, processing speed, executive functioning, and verbal fluency in 50 ever- and 22 never-homeless persons entering outpatient psychiatric treatment. Groups were matched a priori on key demographic, substance use, psychiatric, and premorbid intelligence quotient characteristics. Rates of NP impairment were high among both groups (46%-54%). There were no significant differences in glo

Trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of data about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in European bipolar patients compared to the US-population. This study was conducted to ascertain the rates and types of traumatic events and PTSD in bipolar-I disorder. METHODS: Euthymic bipolar patients were screened for lifetime diagnosis of PTSD using the Post-Traumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale and the Clinician Administered Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Scale. RESULTS: A total of 74 patients (m = 30, f = 44) with diagnosis of bipolar-I disorder were assessed. 37 patients (50%) reported no trauma, 22 patien

Psychopathological correlates of lifetime anxiety comorbidity in bipolar I patients: findings from a French national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Despite numerous studies on the comorbidity of bipolar and anxiety disorders, there is no satisfactory psychopathological model for their overlap. METHOD: 1,090 hospitalized patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for a manic episode of bipolar I disorder were subtyped according to the presence or not of lifetime anxiety comorbidity and assessed for demographic, illness course, clinical, associated condition, temperament, and treatment characteristics. RESULTS: Lifetime anxiety comorbidity, defined as presence of at least one anxiety disorder in lifetime, was found in 27.2% (n = 297) of

Eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder: A dimensional approach to purported relations.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the specificity of purported relations between symptoms of eating disorders (ED) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Whereas most research has focused on diagnostic comorbidity or between-groups analyses, this study took a dimensional approach to investigate specific relations among symptoms of anorexia, bulimia, and OCD, as well as panic, depression, and general distress in a student sample (N=465). Results were that all symptoms showed significant zero-order correlations, including all ED-OCD pairings. After removing general distress varia

[Psychiatric problems in bone marrow transplantation patients during isolation].

Psychological stress is extremely high in patients with oncological diseases. About 50% of all cancer patients show psychological signs and symptoms which are related to the multiple stress factors of their oncological illness. Although many psychological problems connected with cancer are well known, additional acute stress could result from new therapeutic strategies which require settings similar to intensive care, e.g. bone marrow transplantation. For 2 years the Department of Psychiatry in Innsbruck has provided a "liaison service" at the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation. Within

Coping as an index of illness behavior in panic disorder.

Illness behavior in panic disorder was examined by comparing the coping strategies of female primary care patients (34 with panic disorder, 30 with simple panic, and 78 without panic.) Relationships of coping and distress were also examined within each group. The groups differed significantly on the Ways of Coping Checklist, anxiety (SCL-90 and Zung scales), depression (SCL-90 and Beck scales), and number of phobias. The panic disorder group used proportionately less problem-focused and more wishful thinking than the other groups. Within the panic disorder group, anxiety and depression were co

Association between mental illness and disciplinary confinement and its effect on mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The use of disciplinary confinement (DC) as a form of punishment in detention raises international attention and many concerns that have led to the elaboration of several studies. However, as studies report mixed results regarding the risk of DC placement for mentally ill inmates and the possibility of psychological effects from exposure to DC, it was necessary to shed some light in order to better guide future decisions, policies and programs in detention. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk of inmates with mental disorders being placed into disciplinary

Long term course of bipolar I disorder in India: using retrospective life chart method.

BACKGROUND: There are grounds to believe that the course of bipolar disorder may be different in tropical countries such as India when compared to temperate nations. There is a dearth of literature about the course of bipolar I disorder from India. METHODS: This study was conducted in a multispecialty teaching hospital in southern India. Patients with a DSM-IV TR diagnosis of bipolar I disorder, confirmed using SCID-I, with a minimum duration of illness of 3 years were assessed. Information was gathered on demographic and clinical variables, and the life course of episodes was charted using t

Validation of the German Relationship-Obsessive Compulsive Inventory: Testing the Factorial Structure, Measurement Invariance, and External Validity.

OBJECTIVES: Relationship obsessive compulsive disorder (ROCD) describes intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors (e.g., reassurance seeking, monitoring feelings) regarding one's romantic relationship. The Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (ROCI) is the standard instrument to assess ROCD expressions. In our study, we tested the reliability and validity of the German ROCI. METHODS: We analyzed data from two independent nonclinical samples comprising 409 and 248 partnered individuals to expand the knowledge of the psychometric properties, factorial structure, and external validity o

Self-stigma and decision about medication use among a sample of Nigerian outpatients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Self-stigma is a common barrier to maintenance therapy and recovery in schizophrenia. We investigated the prevalence of the decision not to use medication as prescribed and describe the multidimensional relationship of self-stigma with such a decision in 370 adults with schizophrenia. METHOD: A multivariate binary logistic regression model was used to examine the relationship between specific aspects of self-stigma (alienation, perceived discrimination, stigma resistance, stereotype endorsement and social withdrawal) and the decision not to take medication, while controlling for ot

Adult attachment anxiety moderates the relation between self-reported childhood maltreatment and borderline personality disorder features.

Childhood maltreatment is one of many risk factors for borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, not all individuals with BPD report histories of childhood maltreatment. Therefore, it is necessary to identify factors that contextualize the relation between childhood maltreatment and BPD features. With its emphasis on the developmental origins of emotion regulation, attachment theory provides a useful framework to understand how people are differentially affected by early life stress. The present study examined self-reported adult attachment as a moderator in the relation between childhoo

The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory as a screening test for psychiatric comorbidity in patients with tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidity is common in patients who seek help for tinnitus. The perceived severity of tinnitus correlates closer to psychological and general health factors than to audiometrical parameters. Audiologists need valid screening tools in order to identify patients with psychiatric disorders and to tailor treatment in a multidisciplinary setting. The tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) has gained widespread acceptance as a self-report measure of tinnitus handicap. In several studies, THI test score correlates with the level of psychopathologic distress. The aim of our study
