Whipple's disease is an uncommon, multisystem disease that typically strikes middle-aged men causing abdominal pain, arthralgia and malabsorption. The characteristic patholological finding is infiltration of the small intestinal mucosa and accompanying lymph nodes with PAS positive macrophages. BACKGROUND: Multiple malignancies of the urogenital tract have been reported. We investigated the etiological role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the pathogenesis of urogenital cancers.
CASE: We present a case of cervical squamous carcinoma in a 64-year-old woman who subsequently developed Bowen's disease in the perianal skin and transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter. HPV DNA was detected in these tumor specimens using polymerase chain reaction.
CONCLUSION: The results strongly suggest that HPV may play a major role in the carcinogenesis of urogenital and perianal tumors.

A digoxigenin-labeled probe was produced from the Pasteur virus strain for the detection of the rabies virus N gene. The probe hybridization was performed from amplified N gene obtained by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and the results by RT-PCR and hybridization showed 100% agreement. Deer keds, Lipoptena mazamae (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), were collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and humans in Georgia and South Carolina, USA (1 October 2001-6 January 2005) and screened for the presence of DNA from Bartonella spp. Forty deer keds were screened for Bartonella spp. by polymerase chain reaction using primers specific to the riboflavin synthase gene (ribC) of Bartonella. Bartonella species closely related to Bartonella schoenbuchensis and to the etiologic agent of cat-scratch disease (Bartonella henselae) were detected in 10 keds and one ked, respectively.

A 60-year-old male from the Mediterranean area presented with edematous right leg and livid nodules and macules on the skin of upper and lower extremities. Brucella field strains were identified using molecular techniques. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, based on amplification of the insertion sequence IS711, was used to identify the isolates at species level. West Nile virus (WNV) was detected by Taqman reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in 4 of 85 (4.7%) blood-engorged (n = 2) and unengorged (n = 2) Icosta americana (Leach) hippoboscid flies that were collected from wild raptors submitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Mercer County, NJ, in 2003. This report represents an additional detection of WNV in a nonculicine arthropod in North America and the first documented detection of the virus in unengorged hippoboscid flies, further suggesting a possible role that this species may play in the transmission of WNV in North America.

The advances in treatment of HIV and the introduction of polymerase chain reaction assay for the virus now make it acceptable for HIV discordant couples where the male partner is seropositive to attempt to conceive through artificial insemination by husband (AIH) or via in vitro fertilisation. With undetectable viral load and washed sperm, there is minimal risk of transmission of HIV to the female partner, children, other patients, or staff. We describe the development of a programme of AIH for HIV discordant couples and the reasoning behind offering such a programme.

This review addresses the diagnostics of viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs). In the first part, an overview is given on classical methods of VHF diagnostics as well as novel molecular diagnostic tools. Currently available polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for diagnosis of VHF are summarized and discussed. In the second part, VHF diagnostics are described in particular for Lassa fever, yellow fever, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, based on cases that were imported into or occurred within Europe. The third part is focussed on important differential diagnoses of VHF.
