The incidence of breast cancer from screening women according to predicted family history risk: Does annual clinical examination add to mammography?

In breast cancer, mutations of predisposition genes such as BRCA-1/2 and other genes as yet uncharacterised are manifest in up to 10% of cases. Although the prior probability of the presence of a breast cancer predisposing gene can be calculated for individual women, there is no published evidence to justify predicted risk as a selection criteria for screening. This study aims to define which patient groups with a significant family history should be screened, and whether clinical examination is necessary in addition to mammography. The Claus model was used to predict breast cancer risk in wom

Incidence, prevalence and determinants of substance-induced mental disorders in British Columbia, 2022-2023: a population-based study.

AIMS: Substance-induced mental disorders (SIMD) are an under-recognized consequence of psychoactive substance use, despite major implications for treatment needs, health service demand and outcomes. In the context of British Columbia's (BC's) ongoing toxic drug emergency, we aimed to (1) estimate the incidence and prevalence of SIMD in the provincial population and (2) describe socio-demographic, geographic, clinical and substance-specific patterns over a two-year period. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based study using linked administrative health data from Population Data

Efficacy of 0.01% atropine eye drops for myopia control in children of different ethnicities: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although 0.01% atropine is widely used for myopia control, its efficacy is debated and its effectiveness across different ethnicities is unknown. We aim to evaluate its efficacy in different ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: The randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that compared 0.01% atropine against a placebo in myopic children from five databases through August 2025 were included. The primary outcomes included (1) the ratio of the means (RoM), defined as the RoM of annual changes in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) or ocular axial length (AL) in 0.01% atropine to the placebo

Uncomplicated Diverticulosis Is Not Associated With Abdominal Pain or Abnormal Bowel Habit-A Population-Based Swedish Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Whether uncomplicated diverticulosis gives rise to symptoms is controversial. Diary-based studies of abdominal pain and stool habits in general populations are scarce, and we therefore investigated symptom patterns in diverticulosis from prospectively collected symptom diaries in a random sample of the general population who completed a research colonoscopy. METHODS: In the Swedish population-based colonoscopy (PopCol) study, 745 individuals from the general population underwent a colonoscopy of which 130 had diverticulosis, and none had diverticulitis. Seven-day symptom diaries w

Disparate outcomes in Hispanic patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease/steatohepatitis and type 2 diabetes: Large cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) are a growing health burden across a significant portion of the global patient population. However, these conditions seem to have disparate rates and outcomes between different ethnic populations. The combination of MASLD/MASH and type 2 diabetes increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and Hispanic patients experience the greatest burden, particularly those in South Texas. AIM: To compare outcomes between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients in t

Improving assessment and management of suicide risk among people who inject drugs: A mixed methods study conducted at the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, Sydney.

INTRODUCTION: People who inject drugs are 13 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Guidelines for responding to risk in this population are limited. Harm reduction services attended by people who inject drugs require targeted strategies to address the complexities of suicide risk among this population. METHODS: Co-design, engaging health professionals and people with lived experience informed the study. Mixed methods were used to understand the experience of managing suicide risk among clients attending the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney. A s

Exploring the young demographic profile of COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong: Evidence from migration and travel history data.

This paper investigates the profile of COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong, highlighting the unique age structure of confirmed cases compared to other territories. While the majority of cases in most territories around the world have fitted an older age profile, our analysis shows that positive cases in Hong Kong have been concentrated among younger age groups, with the largest incidence of cases reported in the 15-24 age group. This is despite the population's rapidly aging structure and extremely high levels of population density. Using detailed case data from Hong Kong's Centre for Health Departmen

WDR1 and CLNK gene polymorphisms correlate with serum glucose and high-density lipoprotein levels in Tibetan gout patients.

Current evidence suggests heredity and metabolic syndrome contributes to gout progression. Specifically, the WDR1 and CLNK genes may play a role in gout progression in European ancestry populations. However, no studies have focused on Chinese populations, especially Tibetan individuals. This study aims to determine whether variations in these two genes correlate with gout-related indices in Chinese-Tibetan gout patients. Eleven single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the WDR1 and CLNK genes were detected in 319 Chinese-Tibetan gout patients and 318 controls. We used one-way analysis of variance to

Pro: Are we ready to translate Alzheimer's disease modifying therapies to people with Down syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21, which includes the gene for the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and leads to overproduction of beta-amyloid. Clinical-pathological studies indicate that individuals with DS begin demonstrating Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology during adolescence and that 100% exhibit such changes by age 40. Individuals with DS therefore represent a highly enriched population for AD. Additionally, owing to their baseline intellectual disability, people with DS represent a more vulnerable group of individuals as compared with other population
