To achieve a unified assessment of postural instability in Parkinson's disease (PD) over a range of clinical stance and gait tasks, which may provide an insight into a tendency to fall, we measured trunk sway in the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions in freely moving PD patients and age-matched controls. We also measured task duration as time to complete the task or time to loss of balance. Patients had larger amplitudes of trunk sway velocities for stance tasks (e.g. mean pitch velocity when standing on two-legs eyes closed equalled 19.1 +/- 6.4 for PD patients on medication ver

Stroke patients may exhibit the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the nonhemiparetic side, leading to lateral postural imbalan … visual world. This second graviceptive system decisively contributes to our control of upright body posture. The present article describes this still largely unknown neurological disease. The clinical examination of contraversive pushing, its underlying disturbance, lesion location, and approaches for therapy are considered.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss impacts children's ability to learn language and motor skills. This study examined the postural control differences between children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and typical hearing (TH), who differ in language and literacy performance, across diverse balance tasks.
METHODS: Thirty-three children between the ages of 6 and 13 performed a battery of balance tasks evaluating postural control and mobility. Twenty-six children were classified as DHH, while seven were TH children. Children participated in an extended battery of language and literacy measures, no

This study conducted a secondary analysis to objectively measure the effects of modified ride-on cars (MROCs) training in different postures on physical activity (PA) levels in children with motor delays. Data from 39 participants were analyzed in a randomized controlled trial. The participants included those using MROC in standing postures (n = 11, mean age = 22.87 months), MROC in sitting postures (n = 16, mean age = 19.53 months), and a control group that received conventional therapy (n = 12, mean age = 23.30 months). PA intensity was measured using an ActiGraph GT3X on the participants' w…

The prevalence of scoliosis in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) seems to be greater than in the normal population. Over the last two years, a screening for spinal deformities was carried out in patients with CF aged 5 to 18 years, followed up at the CF regional Centre in Parma (Italy). Forty-three patients (twenty-seven males, mean age: 11.8 ± 4.5 years) were enrolled in the study. Nine patients (20.9%) were diagnosed with scoliosis, with a mean Cobb angle of 20.8 ± 9.4 (12-38°). Five patients (11.6%) were diagnosed with a postural kyphosis attitude and one with pathological fixed kyphosis. Al

BACKGROUND: Valgus hindfoot is a very common postural deviation, and the associated foot pronation can be a triggering factor for diseases such as tarsal tunnel syndrome.
RESEARCH QUESTION: This work compares two techniques for hindfoot valgus correction: GPR (Global Postural Reeducation) and PIMT (Postural Integration by Manual Therapy).
METHODS: Sixty young adult subjects from the Brazilian Army with unilateral hindfoot valgus were selected and divided into two groups of 30 subjects, one treated with GPR and the other treated with PIMT. Differences between normal and valgus hindfeet (plant

BACKGROUND: Pertussis is a highly contagious disease of public health interest caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Although its incidence has decreased substantially after the introduction of a vaccination, the burden of the disease remains high. Although the paroxysmal phase is highly disabling, complications are uncommon and more prevalent in children than in adults. The most frequent neurological complication is encephalopathy, but seizures, paresis, paraplegia, ataxias, aphasias, and decerebration postures have also been described. The complication of decerebration postures has n…

The ability to modulate the mechanical properties of our limbs contributes to our ability to interact with the physical world in a consistent and predictable manner. An individual joint's contributions to whole limb mechanics can be quantified by its joint impedance, which characterizes the torque generated about a joint in response to external perturbations of position. A number of studies have estimated joint impedance during movement and have shown that it can be much lower than it is during posture. However, the mechanisms contributing to these differences remain unknown partly because con…

We investigated how subjects with cerebellar ataxia (CA) adapt their postural stability and alignment to a slow and small tilt of the suppor … s. As reflected by the large number of falls, subjects with CA had marked difficulty adapting their posture to the up-moving incline in contrast to control subjects. Subjects with CA who lost their balance had faster trunk velocity and excessive backward trunk reorientation beginning within the first second after onset of the tilting surface. In contrast, …

BackgroundChemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a complication commonly involving extremities characterized by dysthesias. Given the predilection towards diminished proprioceptive feedback, balance and gait deficits often result, leading to an increase in falls risk. To date there is no published evidence to support the use of orthotics in the treatment of balance dysfunction secondary to CIPN.PurposeThis report describes custom foot orthotics with a closed cell foam overlay to improve postural stability and mobility in CIPN.Case descriptionAn individual experiencing progressive

Tremor represents one of the most prominent examples of aberrant synchronisation within the human motor system, and Essential Tremor (ET) is by far the most common tremor disorder. Yet, even within ET there is considerable variation, and patients may have contrasting amounts of postural and intention tremor. Recently, Pedrosa et al. (2013) challenged tremor circuits in a cohort of patients presenting with ET, by applying low-frequency deep brain stimulation within thalamus. This interventional approach provided strong evidence that distinct (yet possibly overlapping) neural substrates are resp

BACKGROUND: Valproic acid is a drug used for the treatment of a variety of psychiatric and neurological disorders. While it is well known to cause postural tremor, hyperammonemia, slowness, and sedation, it has also been described to occasionally cause a reversible form of parkinsonism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of five cases is reported.
RESULTS: All patients were taking the drug for at least several months before onset of their parkinsonian symptoms. Parkinsonism was defined by the presence of bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, and resting tremor, but not postural or actio

OBJECTIVE: Playing an instrument often requires a certain posture and asymmetric position that may affect the anteroposterior spinal curvatures and may lead to postural asymmetry. The aim of the study was to evaluate the spinal curvatures in the sagittal plane and the magnitude of asymmetries in the trunk in the frontal plane in a group of music students in comparison with a control group.
METHODS: The group of 67 students aged 20 to 26 years was made up of 2 subgroups: the musicians (violin playing students of the Academy of Music in Wroclaw) and the control group (physical therapy students …

Older people with toe deformities have been identified as having an increased risk of falling. Little is known, however, about the biomechanical changes that might contribute to this increased risk. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether older people with hallux valgus and lesser toe deformities displayed different gait, balance and plantar pressure characteristics compared to individuals without toe deformities. The presence of hallux valgus and lesser toe deformities were assessed for 312 community-dwelling older men and women. Spatiotemporal gait parameters were measu

The prevalence of sustaining fall-related injuries is high in the middle-aged workforce. Deficits in postural control/muscle strength represent important fall-risk factors. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of balance and strength training followed by detraining on postural control and muscle strength in the workforce. Thirty-two adults with sedentary office work participated in this study and were assigned to an intervention (age 56.0 ± 3.7 yrs) or a control group (age 55.5 ± 3.4 yrs). The intervention group participated in 8 weeks of balance and strength training conducte

Chronic subdural hematoma is a rare complication of epidural anesthesia. This report describes the case of a 34-year-old woman who presented with postpartum headache after she received epidural anesthesia for labor pain. The anesthesiologist's record did not show any anesthesia-related complication. Two days after the delivery (on day 2), the patient complained of headache. Postdural puncture headache was diagnosed, so she was administered analgesics, hydration therapy, and bed rest. On day 4, she reported a slight improvement and was discharged. The postural headache persisted even on day 7 a
