Sacrococcygeal teratomas: midline reconstruction improves cosmesis without compromising outcomes.

AIM: Several studies have addressed the long-term functional, psychosexual and psychosocial outcomes following sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) excision. It is well reported that the classical chevron incision and reconstruction can leave a cosmetically unsatisfactory result; however, there is little in the literature focussed on improving this outcome. In our institution the preference is to perform a midline reconstruction, where possible, this is felt to improve appearance without compromising the oncological or functional outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient-perceived cosmet

In-Home Secondhand Smoke Exposure Among Urban Children With Asthma: Contrasting Households With and Without Residential Smokers.

CONTEXT: Secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe) affects up to half of all children in the United States. Many studies have identified factors associated with in-home SHSe, but few have contrasted these factors between households with and without residential smokers. In the latter case, exposure occurs from only external sources that enter the home, such as visitors or environmental incursion. OBJECTIVE: Among children with SHSe at home, to examine demographic and psychosocial differences between households with and without residential smokers. DESIGN: Baseline analysis of an observational cohort.

Systematic review and meta-analysis reveal positive therapeutic effects of music in brain damage rehabilitation.

Brain damage (BD) caused by stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or neurodegenerative conditions often results in persistent cognitive, motor, and emotional impairments. Music-based interventions (MI) have been explored as adjunctive rehabilitation strategies; however, the evidence remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesize available research on the effects of MI on functional recovery following BD, due to acquired brain injury (ABI), including both TBI and non-TBI. From a total of 868 publications screened in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Scien

Abnormal auditory neural activity in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypotonia, progressive muscle weakness and atrophy caused by progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord and lower cranial nerve nuclei. The disease has also been associated with sensory neuropathies affecting the visual, somatosensory and auditory pathways. This case-control study investigated auditory neural function and perceptual ability in children and young adults with SMA. Twenty individuals with genetically confirmed SMA of varying severity (Types 1-3) participated. Sixteen children/young adults

Toward the Optimal Way to Assess Symptomatic Fatigue in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Mixed Methods Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent work has demonstrated that individuals with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) often experience symptoms of fatigue that are underrepresented in the literature. Conversely, understanding fatigue is highly important to people living with DCM. The AO Spine RECODE-DCM (Research Objectives and Common Data Elements for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy) study group recently determined that no suitable fatigue scales exist for DCM. OBJECTIVE: An assessment of content validity of existing fatigue scales used in other populations was undertaken to determine whether any such scal

Gait Characteristics and Fall Risk in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A 12-Month Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) substantially increases fall risk and accelerates functional decline. However, prospective data linking quantitative gait parameters to fall outcomes remain scarce. We aimed to identify gait parameters associated with falls and functional decline in ALS. METHODS: In this single-center prospective cohort study, we enrolled 256 ALS patients and 256 matched healthy controls. Nineteen spatiotemporal gait parameters were captured using a 3D vision-based system at baseline. Falls, time to wheelchair use, and ALSFRS-R decline were re

Telemedicine-Supported Exercise Interventions in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Scoping Review.

BackgroundHematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative therapy for various hematologic conditions. Though physical exercise has been shown to positively affect physical and psychosocial function in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, they often face multiple barriers to accessing comprehensive exercise-based rehabilitation programs. Telemedicine has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome these challenges by facilitating remote exercise interventions and potentially improving patient outcomes.ObjectiveThis scoping review aimed to map the curren

Exploring the Utility of a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Cannabis Cue-Reactivity Paradigm in Treatment Seeking Adults with Cannabis Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies examining cue-reactivity in cannabis use disorder (CUD) to date have either involved non-treatment seeking participants or been small. We addressed this gap by administering an fMRI cue-reactivity task to CUD participants entering two separate clinical trials. METHODS: Treatment-seeking participants with moderate or severe CUD had behavioral craving measured at baseline via the Marijuana Craving Questionnaire (MCQ-SF). They additionally completed a visual cannabis cue-reactivity paradigm during fMRI following 24-hours of absti

Chronic cognitive sequelae after traumatic brain injury are not related to growth hormone deficiency in adults.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to asses the possible influence of hypothalamo-pituitary deficiencies, and growth hormone (GH) deficiency in particular, on cognition in adult patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is a recently identified risk factor for cognitive deficits and hypopituitarism. Even the patients with favorable outcome after TBI may present with persistent bodily, psychosocial, and cognitive impairments, resembling patients with untreated partial or complete pituitary insufficiency. DESIGN: We performed retrospective and cross-sectional study of endocrine and

[Quality of life measurement in breast cancer patients].

Malignant tumors are among the leading causes of death and long-term health impairment worldwide, and their incidence is steadily rising due to demographic and lifestyle changes. Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women. Although screening, modern immune, targeted, monoclonal anti-HER2 and endocrine therapies, and oncoplastic surgery have significantly improved survival, more and more patients are living with long-term side effects and psychosocial burdens. Due to this, the success of oncological care cannot be measured solely by classic endpoints such as overall survival, dis
