Enlargement of Escherichia coli after bacteriophage infection. II. Proposed mechanism.

Division of Escherichia coli was stopped and mean cellular volume was increased after infection with T-even phage. This host cell enlargement was temperature-dependent, cyanide-sensitive, and stable in the presence of hypertonic medium. Enlargement ceased at about the same time that energy metabolism ceased. Initially, enlargement was accompanied by a decrease in mean cell density. Tritiated 2, 6-diaminopimelic acid was accumulated and incorporated into cold acid-insoluble material at the preinfection rate. These findings suggest that the effect on host cell size is only in part an osmotic phe

Mechanism of eosinophilia. II. Role of the lymphocyte.

A possible role for the lymphocyte in the mechanism of eosinopoiesis has been examined. Procedures known to deplete or inactivate the pool of recirculating lymphocytes such as neonatal thymectomy, administration of antilymphocyte serum, and prolonged thoracic duct drainage, either singly or in combination, resulted in a highly significant reduction in the eosinophil response to trichinosis. Irradiated animals exposed to parasitic challenge did not develop eosinophilia unless reconstituted with lymphocytes as well as bone marrow cells. When "memory" cells were used instead of normal lymphocytes

Purification, concentration, and inactivation of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus was purified and concentrated by chromatography of tissue culture supernatant fluids on diethylaminoethyl-cellulose columns. Stepwise gradient elution studies indicated a broad elution pattern for the virus, with recovery occurring from 0.05 to 0.7 m NaCl. Optical density, infectivity, hemagglutination (HA), and complement fixation (CF) assays indicated that complete recovery of input virus in highly purified form was possible. Single-step elution with 0.7 m tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-succinate-salt buffer resulted in a virus volume decrease of 8

Proton versus photon radiotherapy in adults with primary brain tumors evaluating functional survival: a phase 3 randomized controlled trial study protocol (PRIDE).

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy (RT) plays a significant role in the multimodal management of primary brain tumors, improving oncological outcomes. However, despite advances such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), photon-based RT inevitably exposes normal organs to low-dose radiation, leading to long-term functional morbidities like cognitive decline, endocrine dysfunction, auditory toxicity. These late effects are particularly concerning in patients with favorable prognoses and protracted survival. Proton beam therapy (PBT), owing to its unique physical properties, holds promise f

Fludarabine Enhances Radiosensitivity by Promoting Ferroptosis in B-Cell Lymphoma.

The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of fludarabine, a signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT1) inhibitor, on the radiosensitivity of B-cell lymphoma (BCL) and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Radiotherapy is one of the primary treatments for BCL, and STAT1 plays a critical role in the transcription of cell proliferation-related genes, which are associated with radiotherapy and ferroptosis. This study aims to determine whether fludarabine can enhance the radiosensitivity of BCL and to elucidate the molecular pathways involved. Various in vitro methodo

Phenotypic and lipidomic characterization of primary human epidermal keratinocytes exposed to simulated solar UV radiation.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is known to be one of the most important environmental hazards acting on the skin. The most part of UV radiation is absorbed in the epidermis, where keratinocytes are the most abundant and exposed cell type. Lipids have an important role in skin biology, not only for their important contribution to the maintenance of the permeability barrier but also for the production and storage of energy, membrane organization and cell signalling functions. However, the effects on the lipid composition of keratinocytes under UV radiation are little explored. OBJECTIVE

Clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic profile of patients with a retinoblastoma diagnosis experience in the Costa Rica National Children's Hospital Oncology Unit from January 2009 to December 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastoma represents only 3% of paediatric cancers, but it is the most prevalent intraocular tumour in this population. It develops in the retina as a primitive neuroectodermal tumour that affects development during gestation. The tumour presents in two different forms depending on whether or not it expresses a genetic modification. For patients diagnosed at preschool age, 75% are unilateral non-hereditary cases. While enucleation is the preferred treatment for advanced stages of the tumour, other modalities, such as systemic and intraocular chemotherapy, radiotherapy and lo

Effects of retinoic acid combined with irradiation on the expression of major histocompatibility complex molecules and adhesion/costimulation molecules ICAM-1 in human cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Radiation treatment is one of the most standardized and effective modalities for contemporary cervical cancer therapy. In addition, the radiation-potentiating effects of retinoic acid have been recently described. In order to investigate whether enhanced immunogenicity might be responsible for such potentiation, we have evaluated the effects of retinoic acid combined with high doses of gamma-irradiation on the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) Class I and II and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in human cervical carcinoma cell lines. METHODS: The expre

COVID-19 Vaccination in Patients with Cancer.

Patients with cancer are concerned about the effects of the COVID-19 vaccination. We conducted an online survey on the COVID-19 vaccination status and side effects among patients with cancer in Japan between 8 and 14 August 2021. We included 1182 female patients with cancer aged 20-70 years and registered on an online patient website. Of the patients, 944 had breast cancer, 216 had gynecological cancer, 798 were undergoing drug/radiation therapy, and 370 were in follow-up. At the time of the survey, 885 patients had already received at least one dose. Of these, 580 had also received their seco

Effects of spatial variation in dose delivery: what can we learn from radon-related lung cancer studies?

Exposure to radon progeny results in heterogeneous dose distributions in many different spatial scales. The aim of this review is to provide an overview on the state of the art in epidemiology, clinical observations, cell biology, dosimetry, and modelling related to radon exposure and its association with lung cancer, along with priorities for future research. Particular attention is paid on the effects of spatial variation in dose delivery within the organs, a factor not considered in radiation protection. It is concluded that a multidisciplinary approach is required to improve risk assessmen

Optimal scheduling of biologically targeted radiotherapy and total body irradiation with bone marrow rescue for the treatment of systemic malignant disease.

A mathematical model analysis is used to address the question of optimal scheduling of combined treatments consisting of biologically targeted radiotherapy (BTR), total body irradiation (TBI), and bone marrow rescue. Radiation effects on normal tissue are described using an extension of the LQ model. Tumor effects are described using a simple model that allows for radiation-induced sterilization and exponential proliferation of tumor cells, a proportion of which completely escapes the effects of targeted radiotherapy. The effect on a tumor cell population of a set of treatment schedules, compo…

hTERT peptide fragment GV1001 demonstrates radioprotective and antifibrotic effects through suppression of TGF‑β signaling.

GV1001 is a 16‑amino acid peptide derived from the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) protein (616‑626; EARPALLTSRLRFIPK), which lies within the reverse transcriptase domain. Originally developed as an anticancer vaccine, GV1001 demonstrates diverse cellular effects, including anti‑inflammatory, tumor suppressive and antiviral effects. In the present study, the radioprotective and antifibrotic effects of GV1001 were demonstrated through suppressing transforming growth factor‑β (TGF‑β) signaling. Proliferating human keratinocytes underwent premature senescence upon exposure to ioniz
