Retinal and Choriocapillaris Vascular Changes in Early Alzheimer Disease Patients Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by ß-amyloid accumulation in the brain. A simple and reliable biomarker for AD that is not invasive is urgently needed, particularly in the preclinical and early stages of the disease. The retina shares with the brain, the same embryologic origins and it is affected by similar vascular changes. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the retinal and choriocapillaris vascular structure through optical coherence tomography-angiography (OCTA) evaluation in patients with early AD. METHODS: Eightee

Distance between the center of the FAZ measured automatically and the highest foveal bulge using OCT-angiography in elderly healthy eyes.

The center of the fovea, termed the foveola, is the area of highest visual acuity, has the highest density of cone photoreceptors. We investigated the distance between the automatically-determined center of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and the manually-determined highest foveal bulge (FB) point using single swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) instrument. This cross-sectional study included 49 eyes of 49 individuals (34 women and 15 men; median age: 68 years) with no history of ocular disorders. The FAZ in the superficial capillary plexus was automatically determined

Abnormal Vascular Phenotypes Associated with the Timing of Interruption of Retinal Vascular Development in Rats.

Pathological angiogenesis is a leading cause of blindness in several retinal diseases. The key driving factor inducing pathological angiogenesis is the pronounced hypoxia leading to a marked, increased production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The aim of this study was to determine whether the abnormal vascular growth occurs in a manner dependent on the degree of the vascular defects. Vascular defects of two different degrees were created in the retina by subcutaneously treating neonatal rats with the VEGF receptor (VEGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor KRN633 on postnatal day (P) 4

Visualizing Deep Learning Models for the Detection of Referable Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma.

IMPORTANCE: Convolutional neural networks have recently been applied to ophthalmic diseases; however, the rationale for the outputs generated by these systems is inscrutable to clinicians. A visualization tool is needed that would enable clinicians to understand important exposure variables in real time. OBJECTIVE: To systematically visualize the convolutional neural networks of 2 validated deep learning models for the detection of referable diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The GON and referable DR algorithms were previousl

Theoretical Insights into the Retinal Dynamics of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Patients Treated with Ranibizumab, Based on an Ocular Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Model.

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) results from the pathological angiogenesis of choroidal capillaries, which leak fluid within or below the macular region of the retina. The current standard of care for treating wet AMD utilizes intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF antibodies or antibody fragments to suppress ocular vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels. While VEGF suppression has been demonstrated in wet AMD patients by serial measurements of free-VEGF concentrations in aqueous humor samples, it is presumed that anti-VEGF molecules also permeate across the inne
