Self-paced timing detects and tracks change in prodromal Huntington disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares self-paced timing performance (cross-sectionally and longitudinally) between participants with prodromal Huntington's disease (pr-HD) and a comparison group of gene non-expanded participants from affected families (NC). METHOD: Participants (747 pr-HD: 188 NC) listened to tones presented at 550-ms intervals, matched that pace by tapping response keys and continued the rhythm (self-paced) after the tone had stopped. Standardized cross-sectional and longitudinal linear models examined the relationships between self-paced timing precision and estimated proximity to

Care of the child with the desire to change genders - part III: male-to-female transition.

In Part I of this three-part article, the psychological and medical care of the child wishing to change gender was described. In Part II, preparation for surgery for young adults who were genetically female and undergo surgery to transition to male identity was presented. This third part presents the surgical treatments for gender reassignment procedures for a genetic male wishing to reassign as female. Discussion is included about how parents are responding to these wishes from their prepubescent and teenage children.

Parent, teacher, and self perceptions of psychosocial functioning in intellectually gifted children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Parent, teacher, and self-perceptions of 54 high ability students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were assessed through administration of the Behavioral Assessment Scales for Children, Second Edition. Parent reports resulted in clinically elevated scores on the Atypicality, Attention Problems, Depression, Hyperactivity, Withdrawal, Activities of Daily Living, Adaptability, and Social Skills subscales, and teacher reports resulted in clinically elevated scores on the Atypicality, Depression, Withdrawal, and Adaptability subscales. Self-report scores were in the average range. Parents and te

Sustaining self: the lived experience of transition to long-term ventilation.

Long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) is used to support growing numbers of children and adults who develop chronic respiratory failure. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the subjective meaning of the experience of transition from spontaneous breathing to reliance on LTMV. In-depth, audiorecorded interviews of 11 ventilated individuals living in a western Canadian province were transcribed and analyzed. The transition journey was revealed to be a time of psychological, physical, and spiritual challenge. "Sustaining self " was revealed as the essence of ven

The role of protective self-cognitions in the relationship between childhood trauma and later resource loss.

The authors examined a prospective model investigating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and protective self-cognitions (self-esteem and self-efficacy) with later resource loss among 402 inner-city women who experienced childhood abuse. They predicted that women with PTSD may fail to develop or sustain protective self-cognitions that could protect against future stress. Results from the hypothesized model suggest that child abuse was associated with greater PTSD symptoms and later resource loss. PTSD symptoms were also related to protective self-cognitions, which, in turn, were ass

Transformative ties: gendered violence, forms of recovery, and shifting subjectivities in Chile.

Although a significant body of scholarship on trauma has emerged in medical anthropology, there has been little examination of how gendered expectations shape the aftermath of extreme human experience, forms of recovery, and subjectivity. Here, I show how domestic and other forms of violence have shaped Luz's suffering in the dictatorial (1973-90) and officially democratic (1990-present) eras in Chile. I then elucidate how Luz's engagement with Safe Space, an NGO connected to UN violence against women frameworks, and other globally connected women's groups, have allowed her to generate transfo

Victimization in early life and mental health in adulthood: an examination of the mediating and moderating influences of psychosocial resources.

Although numerous studies have documented the long-term effects of childhood victimization on mental health in adulthood, few have directly examined potential mediators and moderators of this association. Using data from the Welfare, Children, and Families project (1999)-a probability sample of 2,402 predominantly black and Hispanic low-income women with children living in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio-we predict psychological distress in adulthood with measures of physical assault and sexual coercion before age 18. Building on previous research, we test the mediating and moderating influen

Stories from the streets: people's experiences of homelessness.

This study explores how people speak about their experiences of homelessness, and how these experiences have affected their identity claims and their mental health. The mental health of the homeless population is a growing concern for the UK government and non-governmental agencies. There is however, little research looking at the mental health needs of homeless people and their experiences. For this study, a qualitative, narrative approach was used. Eight people were interviewed who described themselves as homeless. The subsequent data were analysed through a narrative analysis process paying

Face perception in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate and patients with severe Class III malocclusion compared to controls.

Although there is principal agreement that increased facial asymmetry is associated with decreased facial attractiveness, there are no studies analysing face perception in patients with a unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) (uCLP) compared to orthognathic Class III patients. To this end, three-dimensional (3D) data on the faces of 30 adults with a complete uCLP, 20 orthognathic patients with a severe skeletal Class III, and 20 adults with a skeletal Class I as a control group were generated. The 3D asymmetry of the facial soft-tissue was analysed. These data were compared with subjective rat

Oral health-related quality of life of children with oligodontia.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the functional and psychosocial impact of oligodontia in children aged 11-14 years. METHODS: Children aged 11-14 years with oligodontia were recruited from orthodontic clinics when they presented for orthodontic evaluation. All completed a copy of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 11- to 14-year olds, a measure of the functional and psychosocial impact of oral disorders. Information on the number and pattern of missing teeth for each child were obtained from charts and radiographs. RESULTS: Thirty-six children were included in the study. The number of missing teet

Perception of threat from emotions and its role in poor emotional expression within eating pathology.

Recent research has documented links between eating disorder (ED) symptomatology and emotional expression deficits. Relevant theoretical models have alluded to the functional role of disordered eating in alleviating affect that is felt to be otherwise unmanageable and threatening. Nevertheless, research examining ED individuals' perceptions of emotional states has been sparse, while empirical studies have predominantly focused on global conceptualizations of emotion, failing to address discrete affect states. The current study had three aims: (a) to determine the relation between ED symptomato

Video feedback with peer ratings in naturalistic anxiety-provoking situations for social anxiety disorder: Preliminary report.

The present study aimed to examine how video feedback can affect perceived performance and anticipatory anxiety in various naturalistic social anxiety-provoking situations among clinical patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and to examine predictors that might influence response to video feedback. Participants were 52 consecutive patients with DSM-IV SAD who participated in a group-based CBT program. Our results demonstrated that video feedback was associated with a decrease in the underestimation of own performance as well as the perception of feared outcomes. Moreover, antic

Evaluating major depressive episodes through the algorithmically structured systematic exploration of subject's state of mind.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Whereas instruments are available to diagnose depression and to rate its severity, there is a lack of instruments to assess the phenomenology of depression, i.e. a set of mental phenomena that constitute subjective experience. The Algorithmically Structured Systematic Exploration of Subject's State of Mind (Assess_Mind) is based on open questions asked via a structured algorithm. Here, we evaluated its reliability and its validity to assess the phenomenology of major depressive episodes. METHODS: Scales were constructed to evaluate various aspects of major depressive episodes

Drunker than intended: misperceptions and information treatments.

BACKGROUND: Juveniles becoming overly intoxicated by alcohol is a widespread problem with consequences ranging from hangovers to deaths. We ask: could overshoots of intended levels of intoxication be triggered by misperceptions of the types found in recent studies of decision making in dynamic systems? It is well known that the dynamics of the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is complicated by a temporary accumulation of alcohol in the stomach delaying the uptake into the blood stream. We hypothesize that juveniles use an overly simplified drinking strategy, where drinking is guided by the di

Transitions in hearing impairment and psychological distress in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous research has demonstrated an association between hearing impairment (HI) and psychological distress, less work has explored the effect of transitions in hearing status on distress over time, or the explanatory pathways that may explain this association. METHOD: We use 2 waves of data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey to examine the effect of HI transitions on changes in distress during 6 years, and to test the potential mediating effects of psychosocial factors and chronic stressors. RESULTS: Experiencing a decline in hearing was associated with

Childhood maltreatment, intervening variables, and adult psychological difficulties in women: an overview.

This article reviews the complex relationship between child maltreatment and later psychosocial difficulties among adult women. Specifically addressed are (a) the various forms of childhood maltreatment, (b) the range of potential long-term psychological outcomes, and (c) important contextual variables that mediate or add to these maltreatment-symptom relationships. Among the latter are characteristics of the abuse and/or neglect; effects of impaired parental functioning; premaltreatment and postmaltreatment psychobiology; qualities of the parent-child attachment; abuse and/or neglect-related

Transgender female youth and sex work: HIV risk and a comparison of life factors related to engagement in sex work.

This study examined the HIV risk behaviors and life experiences of 151 transgender female youth, ages 15-24, in Los Angeles and Chicago. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeling were used to identify life factors associated with ever having engaged in sex work. Sixty-seven percent of participants had ever engaged in sex work and 19% self-reported being HIV positive. Many factors were significantly associated with sex work for this sample population. A final multivariate logistic regression model found that lower education status, homelessness, use of street drugs, and perceived so

Memory complaints are frequent but qualitatively different in young and elderly healthy people.

BACKGROUND: Subjective memory complaints are frequently reported by the elderly. There is less information about the characterization of subjective memory complaints in young people. OBJECTIVE: To determine different memory complaints between young and elderly people with the use of the Subjective Memory Complaints (SMC) scale. METHODS: Participants were volunteers attending a health itinerant unit, a blood donor centre, a leisure centre for retired people, a senior citizens college or university. All participants were questioned about their own memory abilities using the SMC scale and asses

Does cost-benefit analysis or self-control predict involvement in bullying behavior by male prisoners?

The main aim of this study is to assess whether lack of self-control or the perceived costs and benefits of aggression provide the better predictors of bullying behavior and victimization, and direct aggression perpetration, in a sample of 122 male British prisoners. We also assessed whether bullying was associated with height and weight. Zero-order correlations showed that perceived benefits, self-control, and perceived costs were most closely associated with perpetration of bullying, and that lack of self-control was weakly associated with victimization. Height and weight were unrelated to b
