Dimension, Location and Clinical Importance of Supraorbital Foramen and Notch: A Combined Cadaveric and Dry Skull Study.

PURPOSE: The exit points of the supraorbital nerve and its branches hold significant importance in various medical procedures, including supraorbital endoscopic surgeries, forehead-facial aesthetic plastic surgeries, medical aesthetic applications and maxillofacial surgeries. Therefore, the primary objective of the present study was to precisely define the dimension, location and clinical significance of the supraorbital foramen/notch. By doing so, we aimed to enhance our understanding of this anatomical structure and its implications for surgical and aesthetic interventions in the supraorbita

Improving Cranial Vault Remodeling for Unilateral Coronal Craniosynostosis-Introducing Automated Surgical Planning.

STUDY DESIGN: Cranial vault remodeling (CVR) for unicoronal synostosis is challenging due to the asymmetric nature of the deformity. Computer-automated surgical planning has demonstrated success in reducing the subjectivity of decision making in CVR in symmetric subtypes. This proof of concept study presents a novel method using Boolean functions and image registration to automatically suggest surgical steps in asymmetric craniosynostosis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to introduce automated surgical planning into a CVR virtual workflow for an asymmetric craniosynostosis subtype.

Craniocerebral disproportion after decompressive craniectomy in infants: The hidden enemy of cranial repair?

INTRODUCTION: Cranioplasty aims at restoring the physiological integrity and volume of the skull. Any disproportion between the intracranial content and the volume of the container may favor the occurrence of complications. A classification of volume mismatches is proposed. A negative mismatch, consisting of intracranial content minor to skull volume, is well represented by the sinking flap. On the other side, a positive mismatch, consisting of intracranial content higher than skull volume, usually depends on CSF collection or hydrocephalus once the brain edema is regressed. Though, in childre

Use of Pedicled Trapezius Myocutaneous Flap for Posterior Skull Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue defects in posterior skull can be challenging for reconstruction. If related to tumor resection, these wound beds are generally irradiated and can be difficult from a recipient-vessel perspective for a free tissue transfer. Locoregional flaps might prove to be important reconstructive option in such patients. There is a very limited data on the usage of pedicled trapezius myocutaneous flaps for such defects. METHODS: The authors reviewed existing study for usage of trapezius flap for posterior skull repair and used pedicled trapezius myocutaneous flaps based on the des

Development of a finite element human head model partially validated with thirty five experimental cases.

This study is aimed to develop a high quality, extensively validated finite element (FE) human head model for enhanced head injury prediction and prevention. The geometry of the model was based on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging scans of an adult male who has the average height and weight of an American. A feature-based multiblock technique was adopted to develop hexahedral brain meshes including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, corpus callosum, ventricles, and thalamus. Conventional meshing methods were used to create the bridging veins, cerebrospinal fluid, skull,

Case report: Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nasal cavity in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

Neuroendocrine tumors of the nasal cavity are rare in both animals and humans. This report describes the macroscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a neuroendocrine tumor in a three-year-old female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) that was shot due to a facial deformity caused by an oval, firm, exophytic lesion effacing the left frontal and parietal regions. Longitudinal sectioning of the skull revealed a nasal cavity tumor that had invaded the cribriform plate, the rostral bones of the skull, the rostral aspect of the cranial cavity and the frontal sinuses and ext

Posterior remodeling flap for posterior plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: Nonsynostotic posterior plagiocephaly has become the most common skull deformation since pediatricians have suggested the supine position for the newborns to reduce the risk of sudden death. Prevention of such a "positional" deformation or its management once it has occurred is mainly based on physical maneuvers such as physiotherapy and active positional corrective measures. SELECTION CRITERIA: Surgical correction, however, may be suggested in rare cases where deformation of the skull is so severe or the referral of the child is so late that physical corrective treatment cannot

Moist wound healing theory in neonatal aplasia cutis congenita: a case report.

KEY MESSAGE: This clinical case demonstrates complete epithelialization of a neonatal scalp defect through staged application of moist wound dressings (silver, foam, hydrogel) that controlled inflammation, managed exudate, and promoted granulation, achieving rapid healing with minimal scarring. BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare developmental disorder with an estimated incidence of 0.5-1 per 10,000 live births. Currently, there is no standardized treatment protocol, especially for severe cases with potential skull exposure. The moist wound healing theory, which promotes cell

Post-Traumatic Intracranial Pseudoaneurysm Presenting as Epistaxis.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is a frequent presenting complaint in the Emergency Department (ED). Roughly 60% of the population will suffer from epistaxis in their lifetime. The most common causes of epistaxis include nose picking, facial trauma, foreign bodies, and coagulopathies. There are other causes that are much less common, such as intracranial pseudoaneurysms. There are multiple causes that precipitate intracranial pseudoaneurysm formation, with head trauma accounting for less than 1% of inciting events. CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old female with history of traumatic brain injury with associated

Clinical Application of Diagnostic Imaging of Chiari-Like Malformation and Syringomyelia.

Chiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM) is a frequent diagnosis in predisposed brachycephalic toy breeds since increased availability of MRI. However, the relevance of that MRI diagnosis has been questioned as CM, defined as identification of a cerebellar herniation, is ubiquitous in some breeds and SM can be asymptomatic. This article reviews the current knowledge of neuroanatomical changes in symptomatic CM and SM and diagnostic imaging modalities used for the clinical diagnosis of CM-pain or myelopathy related to SM. Although often compared to Chiari type I malformation in huma

Differences in the morphology of the maxillary sinus and roots of teeth between Macaca fuscata and Macaca fuscata yakui determined using cone beam computed tomography.

The Japanese macaque is an endemic species consisting of two subspecies: Macaca fuscata fuscata (MFF) and Macaca fuscata yakui (MFY). The MFY is indigenous to Yakushima Island and represents a subspecies of MFF that lives from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan. However, the differences in the skulls of the MFY and MFF are unknown, despite these subspecies having different skull sizes. The maxillary sinus (MS) indicates that the features of the frontal view reflect the transversal growth of the maxilla of the skull. In this study, we show the MS structures of the MFF (n = 9, 18 sides) and MFY

Selective brain cooling seems to be a mechanism leading to human craniofacial diversity observed in different geographical regions.

Selective brain cooling (SBC) can occur in hyperthermic humans despite the fact that humans have no carotid rete, a vascular structure that facilitates countercurrent heat exchange located at the base of the skull in some mammals. Emissary and angular veins, upper respiratory tract, tympanic cavity and cerebrospinal fluid are major components of SBC system in humans. The efficiency of SBC is increased by evaporation of sweat on the head and by ventilation through the nose, but it is surprising to find out that mammals do not display SBC during exercise hyperthermia. What is the explanation the
