Multifocal Mesenteric Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis After Liver Transplantation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DTF) is a locally aggressive borderline mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by abnormal proliferation of spindle-shaped cells and deposition of collagenous matrix. Although intra-abdominal DTF is rare, it predominantly involves the mesentery, and its clinical presentations and imaging features frequently overlap with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) or sarcomas. Complete surgical resection remains the primary curative approach; however, postoperative recurrence rates are notably high. Moreover, multifocal lesions (with concurrent involvement of intes

Exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of simulated root cause analysis for radiology training.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires radiology residents to engage in an annual safety event that leads to actionable changes in residency programs. Root cause analysis (RCA) is frequently used to fulfill this requirement. Because actual RCA is rare, simulations are a suitable alternative. We evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of using simulated RCA curriculum to meet the ACGME safety requirement. During the 2023-2024 academic year, quality improvement staff in the radiology department developed a simulated RCA and invited radiology residents to pa

The Role of Stepwise Imaging in the Diagnosis and Management of Cholesteatoma in a Resource-Limited Setting: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cholesteatoma is a non-neoplastic but destructive lesion of the temporal bone that can lead to significant complications if not accurately diagnosed and managed. While computed tomography (CT) is the standard for assessing bony erosion, its ability to differentiate cholesteatoma from inflammatory tissue is limited. Non-echo planar diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (non-EPI DWI MRI) offers high specificity for diagnosing cholesteatoma. In resource-limited settings, access to MRI is often restricted, making a stepwise, evidence-based imaging approach crucial. CASE PRESEN

[18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-PSMA dual-tracer total-body PET/CT and PET/MR in patients with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a heterogeneous disease and prevalent malignancy in men, necessitating accurate imaging techniques to facilitate effective diagnosis and management. Recent evidence has demonstrated that [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted PET tracers positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging can provide complementary biological information, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and the assessment of lesion heterogeneity in patients with PCa. However, optimal protocols for PSMA/FDG dual-tracer PET/CT and PET/

Dynamic Changes of Longitudinal Arch Work Are Related to Energy Expenditure During Long-Distance Running.

PURPOSE: The medial longitudinal arch of the foot plays a role in energy storage and release during running; however, the relationship between its dynamic mechanical behavior and energy expenditure remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the association between changes in the mechanical work of the longitudinal arch and the energy expenditure during prolonged running. METHODS: 16 male athletes or sports enthusiasts participated in a 60-min treadmill running trial at a constant speed of 10 km/h. Biomechanical data were obtained using force-instrumented treadmill and a motion

Three-Dimensional Hemisided Analysis of the Pharyngeal Airway: A Novel Technical Strategy to Evaluate Asymmetric Remodeling After Orthognathic Surgery.

Orthognathic surgery for asymmetric mandibular prognathism may induce side-specific alterations in the pharyngeal airway, yet conventional analyses are limited to global assessments. This technical report introduces a reproducible method for three-dimensional (3D) hemisided airway analysis to investigate these nuanced changes. This retrospective study included 5 patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism who underwent a hybrid technique combining modified intraoral vertico-sagittal ramus osteotomy (mIVSRO) on one side and sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) on the other. Preoperative an

Carbonell-Bonafé Component Separation Technique for Giant Recurrent Ventral Hernia With Loss of Domain: A Case Report.

Complex ventral hernias pose a significant surgical challenge, particularly those with large defects or loss of domain. Traditional techniques may be associated with high complication rates or insufficient defect coverage. The modified Carbonell-Bonafé anatomical component separation (ACS) technique offers an innovative approach to achieve tension-free closure and functional abdominal wall reconstruction. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a giant recurrent ventral hernia (European Hernia Society (EHS) classification M2-4 W3 R6), a history of 11 previous abdominal surgeries, and a

Prevention of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with basic fibroblast growth factor: an experimental study in rats.

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), characterized by persistent jaw bone exposure, is believed to result from the inhibition of bone remodeling and wound healing, often associated with potent intravenous bisphosphonates such as zoledronic acid (ZA). These bisphosphonates are known to significantly impact the healing of soft and bone tissues due to their anti-angiogenic properties. Our study aimed to explore whether applying the basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), known for its ability to promote angiogenesis and bone remodeling, over extraction sockets could prevent the

A novel methodology for calibration and experimental validation of cervical spine biomechanics models using ANFIS and genetic algorithm.

The cervical spine is an essential structure in human physiology but is vulnerable to diseases, such as lesions, disc herniation, and vertebral fractures. Finite element (FE) modeling represents a powerful approach for predicting the biomechanics of the cervical spine under various loading conditions. Conventional methods usually do not take into account the consistency of the material properties, which potentially restricts their capability to realistically represent biomechanical behavior. This study presents a novel calibration methodology aimed at enhancing the predictive biofidelity of FE

Clinical Significance of an Incidentally Detected Lateral Lingual Foramen on Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT): A Case Report and Review of Pertinent Literature.

The lateral lingual foramen (LLF) is an often-overlooked anatomical variant of the mandible with important clinical implications during implant placement and oral surgical procedures. Unlike the consistently present midline lingual foramen, LLF exhibits marked variability in its prevalence, morphology, and neurovascular content, contributing to potential complications when unrecognized. This case report describes an incidental LLF identified during routine cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) undertaken for the preoperative evaluation of mandibular third molars in a healthy 21-year-old woman.

Multi-Task Collaborative Assisted Training Method for Grouping Fuzzy Categories Classification of Cervical Cancer Cells.

Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that endangers women's life and health. While deep learning has enhanced the accuracy of cervical cell classification, there remain obstacles impeding further performance enhancement, including the similarities between different categories, variability between single cells and cell clusters, as well as the accuracy of annotations. To address these issues, a novel multi-task collaborative framework for cervical cell classification is proposed. Specifically, to solve the similarity between different categories, we propose a grouping cell contrast auxiliary br

Breed-specific anatomical risk factors of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome: A comprehensive computed tomographic study from nares to cervical trachea.

The severity of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) can vary in dogs with similar external traits. This study aimed to identify breed-specific upper airway lesions measured on computed tomographic (CT) images and their associations with the BOAS index (a measure of airway obstruction). This was a prospective cross-sectional study including 40 pugs, 52 French bulldogs, and 21 bulldogs. All subjects underwent whole-body barometric plethysmography respiratory function testing to obtain a BOAS index and CT of the head/neck. Eleven validated CT measurements were recorded from nares to

A case of large-vessel giant cell arteritis onset in a patient over 90 years old: Diagnostic challenge in differentiating from an infectious aneurysm.

UNLABELLED: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large-vessel vasculitis that can involve extracranial arteries, such as the aorta, leading to aneurysm formation. However, differentiating aneurysms caused by large-vessel GCA (LV-GCA) from infectious aortic aneurysms remains a diagnostic challenge. We report a rare case of a 91-year-old man with anorexia, weight loss, and low-grade fever. Laboratory findings revealed elevated inflammatory markers, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed saccular aneurysms of the descending and abdominal aorta with periaortic soft tissue mass. Although
