Host responses to S. pneumoniae in wild type and Mertk mutant mice.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia. Mertk is a receptor tyrosine kinase and a member of the TAM family. It serves as an efferocytosis receptor involved in the recognition and removal of apoptotic debris by phagocytic cells, dampening the inflammatory response. Here we show that at 24h post-inoculation with S. pneumoniae, Mertk-/- mice generated through homologous recombination and backcrossed (HRB-Mertk-/- mice) have fewer bacteria present in their pneumonic lung than wild type mice. This enhanced clearance was not observed in Mertk-/- mice generated …

Antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens isolated from cancer patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global public health, limiting treatment options for infections. AMR is part … niae, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterobacter spp. For E. coli, resistance prevalence was highest for penicillins (81.84%), followed by cotrimoxazole (65.79%) and monobactams (61.61%). For K. pneumoniae, the highest prevalence of resistance was observed for penicillins (98.99%) …

The common bacterial pathogens reported in the included studies were Streptococcus pneumoniae (10 studies), Staphylococcus aureus (10 studies), and Escherichia coli (4 studies). Multiplex quanti … hlamydophila pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Combined NPS and sputum samples (n = 92) were created from 46 pairs of positive and 46 pairs of negative signals for NPS-alone and sputum-alone samples. Sputum samples (44.3%; 97/219) had a significantly higher positivity rate compared to NPS sampl …

Results from the Survey of Antibiotic Resistance (SOAR) 2018-21 in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates: data based on CLSI, EUCAST (dose-specific) and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) breakpoints.

OBJECTIVES: To determine antibiotic susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae from community-acquired respiratory tract infections in Kuwait and United Arab Emirates (UAE), collected in 2018-21. METHODS: MICs determined by CLSI broth microdilution; susceptibility data interpreted using CLSI and EUCAST breakpoints. RESULTS: A total of 49 S. pneumoniae and 79 H. influenzae and 49 S. pneumoniae and 34 H. influenzae were collected from Kuwait and UAE, respectively. Of the pneumococci, 26.5% (UAE) and 20.4% (Kuwait) were penicillin susceptible by CLSI oral/EUCAST low-d…

Systematic research to overcome newly emerged multidrug-resistant bacteria.

In the 1980s, I found that the chromosomal β-lactamase of Klebsiella pneumoniae LEN-1 showed a very high similarity to the R-plasmid-mediated penicillinase TEM-1 on the amino acid sequence level, and this strongly suggested the origination of TEM-1 from the chromosomal penicillinases of K. pneumoniae or related bacteria. Moreover, the chromosomal K1 β-lactamase (KOXY) of Klebsiella oxytoca was found to belong to the class A β-lactamases that include LEN-1 and TEM-1, although KOXY can hydrolyze cefoperazone (CPZ) like the chromosomal AmpC-type cephalosporinases of various Enterobacteriaceae tha

Characterization of pneumococcal meningitis before and after introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Niger, 2010-2018.

Pneumococcal meningitis in the African meningitis belt is primarily caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1, a serotype contained in the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). In 2014, Niger introduced PCV13 with doses given at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. We leveraged existing meningitis surveillance data to describe pneumococcal meningitis trends in Niger. As a national reference laboratory for meningitis, Centre de Recherche Médicale et Sanitaire (CERMES) receives cerebrospinal fluid specimens from suspected bacterial meningitis cases and performs confirmatory testing for an…

Antibiotic Resistance Rates by Geographic Region Among Ocular Pathogens Collected During the ARMOR Surveillance Study.

INTRODUCTION: The Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring in Ocular micRoorganisms (ARMOR) study is an ongoing nationwide surveillance program that surveys in vitro antibiotic resistance rates and trends among ocular bacterial pathogens. METHODS: Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from ocular infections were collected at clinical centers across the US and categorized by geographic region based…
