Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder. It primarily affects the axial skeleton through involvement of the peripheral joint scan occurs. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in AS varies from 4% to 35%. Here, we present a case of a 35-year-old male, follow-up of AS from last 8 years on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, presented with fresh complaints of painfully restricted movements of jaw during swallowing. Computer tomography of patient demonstrates articular cartilage changes with disc and joint abnormalities.

The isolated unilateral palsy of the hypoglossal nerve is an unusual sign in daily medical practice. We present the case of a 74 year old man, without relevant medical history, who started with headache and difficulty to swallow. On the physical examination, he had isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy without evidence of tongue atrophy or fasciculation. The patient had a good spontaneous evolution. Idiopathic isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy requires an exhaustive evaluation with neuroimages and complementary exams. It usually presents partial or total spontaneous remission.

The upper aerodigestive tract, specifically the cricopharyngeal area, is the most common site of foreign body impaction. Anatomically, this area is the first constriction of the oesophagus. Fish bones, one of the most common foreign bodies encountered in the throat, tend to get stuck in this area. The movement of this sharp-edged foreign body upon swallowing will induce odynophagia and an acute onset of neck pain. We report a case of a healthy elderly man who complained of sudden anterior neck pain and odynophagia after eating yellowtail scad fish.

Swallowed button batteries (BB) which remain lodged in the oesophagus are at risk of serious complications, particularly in young children. The authors report a 3-year-old child, who rapidly developed an oesophageal perforation, following the ingestion of a 20-mm lithium BB which was initially mistaken for a coin. A thoracotomy and T-tube management of the perforation led to a positive outcome. BBs (20 mm) in children should be removed quickly and close observation is required as the damage initiated by the battery can lead to a significant injury within a few hours.

A 36-year old woman presented with a 5-year history of progressive dysphagia. We present 4 cases with metastasis to the thyroid gland (MTG), and discussed the diagnosis and treatment of MTG. It is not always easy to correctly diagnose MTG from primary thyroid cancer. A 36-year-old woman presented with a history of change in voice of 1 month's duration and difficulty swallowing and episodes of nasal regurgitation of 6 days' duration. Examination revealed paralysis of the right vocal fold and the right side of the soft palate. On further investigation, she was found to have syringomyelia with syringobulbia and a Chiari type I malformation. She underwent foramen magnum decompression surgery and was followed up for 1 year. Her dysphagia and nasal regurgitation resolved, but no functional improvement was seen in either her vocal fold or palate.

The inadvertent swallowing of foreign bodies is common, but rarely results in perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Because any site of the gastrointestinal tract may be perforated by a foreign body, the clinical presentation may vary and mimic diverse medical conditions. We report the case of a 60-year-old man who experienced left upper quadrant pain of 4 weeks duration before the onset of peritoneal signs. The symptoms were shown to result from perforation of the transverse colon by a fish bone (35 mm in length) with a developing abscess.

Bezoars are the most common foreign bodies of gastrointestinal tract. They contain swallowed hair, different fibres, seeds, nut shells, sweets or drugs. Clinical manifestations vary, depending on the location and size of bezoar, from "no symptoms" to "acute abdomen" syndrome. In this case report, the authors describe a giant trichobezoar from the stomach of an 18-year-old girl, who had been admitted to the gynecological department with syndromes suggesting an ovarian cyst torsion. The preoperative diagnosis was not confirmed and a giant trichobezoar was found and removed during the surgery.

The successful removal of impacted denture in the oesophagus in a patient is reported, with a review of the literature. A 36-year-old Malay man complained of dysphagia after swallowing his denture.
