[Epilepsy surgery for refractory neurocysticercosis-related epilepsy].

INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis is one of the most frequent causes of epilepsy worldwide, with some cases going into refractoriness. For that reason, surgical treatment should be considered, particularly lesionectomy, with or without temporal lobectomy. CASE REPORTS: From our series of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy from 2008 to 2018, we selected all cases with one or more lesions suggestive of neurocysticercosis who underwent epilepsy surgery. Three patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria, with an average age of 39.33 year-old, two were female, epilepsy onset was at a mean age of 1…

[Current research in search of neurobiological correlates of reading and spelling disorder].

OBJECTIVE: The present article provides an overview of the main approaches in the current literature on the neurobiological correlates of developmental dyslexia. METHODS: Approximately 120 articles, published mainly within the past six years, were analyzed. RESULTS: Three topics are of focal interest: first, the point of unusual asymmetries of the temporal plana and deviations of the corpus callosum; second, the analysis of abnormal patterns of activation of the left hemispherical frontal and temporal lobes. In this context, a dysfunction of the angular gyrus is discussed. The third approach…

APOE ε4 and risk for Alzheimer's disease: do regionally distributed white matter hyperintensities play a role?

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that parietal lobe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) increase the risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) … parietal and occipital lobes. In ESPRIT, ε4 carriers had elevated WMH particularly in parietal and temporal lobes. In the combined analysis, ε4 carriers had higher WMH in parietal and occipital lobes. Increased WMH volume was associated with increased frequency of dementia irrespective of APOE ε4 status; those with the ε4 were more likely to have dementia if t …

Evolution of source EEG synchronization in early Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) disrupts functional connectivity in distributed cortical networks. We analyzed changes in the S-estimator, a measure of multivariate intraregional synchronization, in electroencephalogram (EEG) source space in 15 mild AD patients versus 15 age-matched controls to evaluate its potential as a marker of AD progression. All participants underwent 2 clinical evaluations and 2 EEG recording sessions on diagnosis and after a year. The main effect of AD was hyposynchronization in the medial temporal and frontal regions and relative hypersynchronization in posterior cingulate,

Correlation between gray matter density-adjusted brain perfusion and age using brain MR images of 202 healthy children.

We examined the correlation between brain perfusion and age using pulsed arterial spin-labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance images (MRI) in a large number of healthy children. We collected data on brain structural and ASL perfusion MRI in 202 healthy children aged 5-18 years. Structural MRI data were segmented and normalized, applying a voxel-based morphometric analysis. Perfusion MRI was normalized using the normalization parameter of the corresponding structural MRI. We calculated brain perfusion with an adjustment for gray matter density (BP-GMD) by dividing normalized ASL MRI by normalized gr

The neural substrate of gesture recognition.

Previous studies have linked action recognition with a particular pool of neurons located in the ventral premotor cortex, the posterior parietal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus (the mirror neuron system). However, it is still unclear if transitive and intransitive gestures share the same neural substrates during action-recognition processes. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the cortical areas active during recognition of pantomimed transitive actions, intransitive gestures, and meaningless control actions. Perception of

Differential activity in left inferior frontal gyrus for pseudowords and real words: an event-related fMRI study on auditory lexical decision.

After Newman and Twieg and others, we used a fast event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) design and contrasted the lexical processing of pseudowords and real words. Participants carried out an auditory lexical decision task on a list of randomly intermixed real and pseudo Chinese two-character (or two-syllable) words. The pseudowords were constructed by recombining constituent characters of the real words to control for sublexical code properties. Processing of pseudowords and real words activated a highly comparable network of brain regions, including bilateral inferior fr

Left inferior parietal dominance in gesture imitation: an fMRI study.

The inability to imitate gestures is an essential feature of apraxia. However, discrepancies exist between clinical studies in apraxic patients and neuroimaging findings on imitation. We therefore aimed to investigate: (1) which areas are recruited during imitation under conditions similar to clinical tests for apraxic deficits; (2) whether there are common lateralized areas subserving imitation irrespective of the acting limb side; and also (3) whether there are differences between hand and finger gestures. We used fMRI in 12 healthy, right handed subjects to investigate the imitation of four

The neural bases of sentence comprehension: a fMRI examination of syntactic and lexical processing.

One of the challenges to functional neuroimaging is to understand how the component processes of reading comprehension emerge from the neural activity in a network of brain regions. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine lexical and syntactic processing in reading comprehension by independently manipulating the cognitive demand on each of the two processes of interest. After establishing a consistency with earlier research showing the involvement of the left perisylvian language areas in both lexical access and syntactic processing, the study produced n

Prevalence and distribution of human herpesvirus 7 in normal brain.

Although it has been recognised that human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) establishes latent infection in CD4+ T lymphocytes and productive infection in salivary glands, recent data suggest that its in vivo tropism may be more widespread. In this study, the prevalence and distribution of HHV-7 in brain tissues of 30 consecutive post-mortems were examined by nested polymerase chain reaction. For each post-mortem, 10 fresh autopsy tissue samples were collected respectively from the cerebellum, frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes of both cerebral hemispheres. These patients were aged from 20-

Neural mechanisms of visual attention: object-based selection of a region in space.

Objects play an important role in guiding spatial attention through a cluttered visual environment. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) to measure brain activity during cued discrimination tasks requiring subjects to orient attention either to a region bounded by an object (object-based spatial attention) or to an unbounded region of space (location-based spatial attention) in anticipation of an upcoming target. Comparison between the two tasks revealed greater activation when attention selected a region bounded by an object. This activation was strongly later

Alterations in the functional anatomy of reading induced by rehabilitation of an alexic patient.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to measure regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in a stroke patient with acquired phonologic alexia before and after therapy using the Auditory Discrimination in Depth (ADD) program. BACKGROUND: After rehabilitation of acquired language disorders, functional imaging can detect activity in brain structures that do not mediate language during normal conditions. However, the anatomic correlates of recovery or rehabilitation from acquired reading disorders are largely undescribed. METHODS: Cerebral SPECT scans were obtained before and after the intervention wit

Complementary acupuncture treatment increases cerebral metabolism in patients with Parkinson's disease.

We used positron emission tomography (PET) and the 18-flourodeoxyglucose tracer to study cerebral effects of complementary acupuncture in Parkinson's disease. Five patients received scalp-acupuncture and Madopa, while the other five had Madopa only. PET scans before and after 5 weeks of complementary acupuncture treatment show increased glucose metabolisms in parietal, temporal, occipital lobes, the thalamus, and the cerebellum in the light-diseased hemisphere, and in parietal and occipital lobes of the severe-diseased hemisphere. No changes were observed in the Madopa-only group. Acupuncture

Frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type revisited.

The neuropathology of frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type was reevaluated on the basis of a new material of 13 cases against the background of experiences from earlier published 16 cases. The salient neuropathological feature was an unspecific neuronal degeneration of superficial cortical layers of the frontal and to some extent the temporal lobes without markers for Alzheimer's, Pick's or Lewy body diseases and there were no indications so far of a prion etiology. The consistency of histopathological features are taken to indicate a disease entity, also identified by other authors…

[Agyria--a clinico-pathological study (author's transl)].

Agyria is an extremely rare malformation of the brain caused by an arrest of neuronal migration towards the cortex. A case of nearly complete agyria is presented in a 2 8/12 year-old boy. The autopsy revealed complete absence of cerebral convolutions in the frontal, parietal and occipital lobes of both hemispheres and discrete convolutions in the temporal lobes. The cortex reached up to 22 mm and the central white matter was very thin, occipitally up to 2 mm. Additionally, hydrocephalus internus was observed. Clinical and pathoanatomical findings are presented and compared with other data publ…

White matter quantitative anomalies and clinical outcome in drug-resistant epilepsies.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between cerebral white matter quantitative anomalies and postoperative clinical outcomes in patients with drug-resistant epilepsies. METHODS: Automatic fiber quantification methodology was used to determine the diffusional anomalies in cerebral white matter tracts, from eight patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and 12 with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) candidates and/or undergoing epilepsy surgery. We studied the fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), volume (Vol), and number of fibers (Fib) of white matter tracts related to t…
