Novel antimicrobials or new treatment strategies are urgently needed to treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) related infections and especially to address the problem of antibiotic resistance. We propose a novel strategy that combines the human antimicrobial peptide (AMP) LL37 with different antibiotics to find synergistic AMP-antibiotic combinations against P. aeruginosa strains in vitro. Our results showed that LL37 exhibited synergistic inhibitory and bactericidal effects against P. aeruginosa strains PAO1 and PA103 when combined with the antibiotics vancomycin, azithromycin, polymyx

Introduction Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (E. meningoseptica) is a multidrug-resistant, non-fermenting Gram-negative bacillus increasingly associated with nosocomial infections, particularly in immunocompromised and critically ill patients. Its intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics limits treatment options and contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. Aim and objective The study aimed to investigate the clinical and microbiological characteristics of E. meningoseptica infections among ICU/NICU patients and to explore potential environmental sources through hospital-based surveil

Valley surface water is considered a focal public health concern owing to the presence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. The distribution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bacteria in the surface water is affected by the presence of multiple factors, including antibiotics coming from wastewater discharge or other contaminant sources such as pharmaceuticals, biocides, and heavy metals. Furthermore, there is evidence suggesting that high levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can be transferred within bacterial communities under the influence of heavy metal stress. Hence, the primary aim o

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) is an emerging cause of invasive disease, yet contemporary genomic data from Canada remain scarce. We investigated 56 cases of invasive SDSE infection identified between 2018 and 2022 in two major tertiary care teaching hospitals in Toronto, Ontario, and characterized 49 corresponding isolates by whole-genome sequencing. Nearly three-quarters of infections were caused by the globally expanding ST20 emm type stG62647 lineage. Patients infected with this lineage were significantly older than those infected with non-ST20 lineages across both bl

OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus capitis is part of the human microbiome and an opportunistic pathogen known to cause catheter-associated bacteraemia, prosthetic joint infections, skin and wound infections, among others. Detection of S. capitis in normally sterile body sites saw an increase over the last decade in England, where a multidrug-resistant clone, NRCS-A, was widely identified in blood samples from infants in neonatal intensive care units. To address a lack of complete genomes and antibiograms of S. capitis in public databases, we performed long- and short-read whole-genome sequencing, hybr

Access to free, off-target, and nontherapeutic doses of antibiotics is a key driving factor in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Intravenously (IV) administered vancomycin (VAN) is among the last-line antibiotics for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. A fraction of the total IV dose unwantedly reaches the gastrointestinal tract, driving AMR. Selective VAN removal from the complex intestinal fluid may reduce the probability of AMR emergence; however, it remains a significant challenge due to the competitive adsorption of other species. Here,

The present study involves the precise identification and safety evaluation of Enterococcus casseliflavus KB1733, previously identified using 16S rRNA analysis, through whole-genome sequencing, phenotypic analysis, and preclinical toxicity studies. Analyses based on the genome sequencing data confirm the identity of KB1733 as E. casseliflavus and show that the genes related to vancomycin resistance are only present on the chromosome, while no virulence factor genes are present on the chromosome or plasmid. Phenotypic analyses of antibiotic resistance and hemolytic activity also indicated no sa…

The conditions of aquatic environments have a great influence on the microbiota of several animals, many of which are a potential source of microorganisms of biotechnological interest. In this study, bacterial strains isolated from aquatic environments were bioprospected to determine their probiotic profile and antimicrobial effect against fish and food pathogens. Two isolates, identified via 16S rRNA sequencing as Lactococcus lactis (L1 and L2) and one as Enterococcus faecium 135 (EF), produced a bacteriocin-like antimicrobial substance (BLIS), active against Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonell

Food consumption allows the entrance of bacteria and their antibiotic resistance (AR) genes into the human oral cavity. To date, very few studies have examined the influence of diet on the composition of the salivary microbiota, and even fewer investigations have specifically aimed to assess the impact of different long-term diets on the salivary resistome. In this study, the saliva of 144 healthy omnivores, ovo-lacto-vegetarians, and vegans were screened by nested PCR for the occurrence of 12 genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, vancomycin, and
