Electroosmotic modulated unsteady squeezing flow with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, electric and magnetic field effects.

Modern lubrication systems are increasingly deploying smart (functional) materials. These respond to various external stimuli including electrical and magnetic fields, acoustics, light etc. Motivated by such developments, in the present article unsteady electro-magnetohydrodynamics squeezing flow and heat transfer in a smart ionic viscous fluid intercalated between parallel plates with zeta potential effects is examined. The proposed mathematical model of problem is formulated as a system of partial differential equations (continuity, momenta and energy). Viscous dissipation and variable therm…

Doppler ultrasonic diagnosis of dissecting aneurysms of the aortic and great vessels.

The reliability of the method and the simplicity of the execution of the Doppler examination allowed us to use it as a diagnostic help in the dissecting aneurysms of the aorta and in the hiatrogenetic dissections of the great vessels. The findings carried out are peculiar from the point of view "acoustic" and from the point of view "morphologic" and in part they depend on the type of the vascular dissection.

Peak nasal inspiratory flow in the assessment of patients with severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps treated with full house endoscopic sinus surgery: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) is a simple objective measure of nasal patency, but its role in severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains insufficiently defined. This study evaluated the longitudinal behavior of PNIF after full-house endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and its relationship with rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry and patient-reported outcomes. METHODOLOGY: Thirty adults with uncontrolled CRSwNP undergoing full-house ESS were prospectively followed at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6 months. Multiscale photoacoustic imaging of stroke in preclinical models and future directions toward clinical translation [Invited].

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) combines optical absorption contrast with acoustic detection, enabling noninvasive, high-resolution spatiotemporal observation of cerebral hemodynamics, oxygenation, and vascular structural changes, thereby emerging as a powerful tool for investigating mechanisms in preclinical stroke models. This review comprehensively highlights how PAI has been employed to track pathophysiological changes and therapeutic responses in various preclinical stroke animal models, and discusses future directions toward translating these findings from preclinical research to clinical ap

Impact of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on voice and speech in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) effectively alleviates motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet its impact on speech and voice remains inconsistent. This study examined acoustic parameters, perceptual features, and speech intelligibility using a large, methodologically standardized cohort. METHODS: A total of 105 PD patients (55 females, 50 males; mean age ≈ 57 years) undergoing STN-DBS were evaluated. All received posterolateral electrode placement, bilateral stimulation, and a postoperative 30–35% reduction in levodopa. Acoustic measures fundamental frequ

Electrosensing-based three-dimensional localization and obstacle avoidance for underwater robots with a mobile surface beacon in shallow-water environments.

Accurate localization and reliable obstacle avoidance remain challenging for underwater robots in shallow and unstructured environments, where optical sensing can be degraded by light attenuation and turbidity, while acoustic sensing may be affected by multipath propagation and environmental noise. Weakly electric fish exploit externally generated electric-field signals for passive electrosensing and electrocommunication, and actively emit and receive self-generated electric signals to perceive nearby objects in turbid and confined aquatic environments. Inspired by these capabilities, this stu

Cough Audio Recognition for Early Detection of Respiratory Diseases: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Coughing is a common clinical symptom and a protective respiratory reflex closely associated with various respiratory system diseases. The acoustic characteristics of cough sounds are influenced by underlying pathological factors, with distinct acoustic signatures corresponding to different etiologies. Through rigorous analysis of these sounds, rapid identification and preliminary diagnosis of related conditions may be achieved. This approach holds great potential for broad application in mobile health and ubiquitous health platforms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the app

Effects of TNF-α and L-Arginine Ex Vivo Treatment on Left Internal Mammary Artery (LIMA) Grafts.

Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the standard revascularization procedure, and the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) is the most widely used conduit owing to its long-term patency and favorable impact on survival. Although fibrosis and calcification are comparatively infrequent in internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts, progressive remodeling may still compromise patency. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in vascular remodeling and calcification, whereas L-arginine, a precursor of nitric oxide, may exert vasoprotective effects. Aim:

The Fenestras Elisabeth Complex (Nova Structura) in the Parietal Bone of Plecotus auritus: Morphology, Topography, and Functional Significance.

Fenestrations of mammalian skull bones are rare and poorly understood, particularly within the parietal bone. In bats-a group characterised by advanced sensory specialisation and echolocation-superficial modifications of the cranial vault may have functional significance, yet their occurrence and organisation remain insufficiently documented. In this study, we describe an exceptional fenestrated complex in the posterolateral parietal bone of Plecotus auritus, comprising structural elements not previously recorded within Vespertilionidae. The aim of the study was to characterise in detail the m

Echosounders for fish detection disturb harbour porpoises.

The marine world is an acoustic world that has become noisier with the increasing diversity and intensity of human activities at sea. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is one of the best-studied cetaceans regarding hearing and responses to human-made underwater sound. The species is most sensitive to high frequencies, yet most impact studies have focused on relatively low-frequency sources. As such, the effects of high-frequency sonar - including echosounders - remain largely unstudied, despite their widespread use on vessels for depth sounding, fish or object detection, and seabed mapp
