Neonatal lupus erythematosus (LE) is a rare immune-mediated disease caused by placental transport of maternal anti-SSA/Ro, anti-SSB/La and/or anti-U1RNP antibodies. Here, we demonstrate two cases of neonatal LE, in both of which cutaneous LE was exacerbated by inoculation. To our knowledge, cases worsening neonatal LE after administration of vaccines have not been reported. In case 1, not only exacerbation of pre-existing annular erythema but also spreading of new erythematous lesions to the trunk and extremities were induced following vaccination. Of interest, all of the lesions simultaneousl

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic skin disorder characterized by epithelial tissue fragility. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is the most severe form, characterized by the presence of blisters, erosion, and ulcer formation, leading to scarring and contraction of the limbs. RDEB is also associated with extra-cutaneous complications, including emaciation, congestive heart failure, and systemic amyloidosis. The main cause of these clinical complications is unknown; however, we hypothesized that they are caused by elevated circulating inflammatory cytokines o

The genus Leishmania includes a number of protozoan parasites that cause a wide range of infections named leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis may be appear in three clinical forms - cutaneous (CL), visceral, and mucocutaneous (MCL) - with variation in their presentation and severity: diffuse CL and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis). The prevalent signs of CL are nonhealing ulcers on exposed skin, but infected patients may have other dermatologic symptoms. In the 1960s, amphotericin B deoxycholate was introduced as a second-line therapy for CL and MCL. However, widespread administration of the agen

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is clinically characterized by scaly cutaneous plaques. New evidence suggests that dysregulation of interleukin (IL)-23, a key cytokine in the T-helper-17 pathway, plays a vital role in the development of psoriatic systemic inflammation. The novel biologic medication tildrakizumab is among the first drugs with specific action against IL-23 that has recently been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Tildrakizumab has been shown in large randomized controlle

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are cutaneous benign tumors commonly seen in young or middle-aged adults. Plasma exeresis is an innovative technique for several skin conditions: it causes ionization of the atmospheric gas between the proximal tip of the device and the tissue to be treated, creating sublimation of the tissue.
OBJECTIVE: To remove the cyst with a novel technique that allows a good cosmetic result.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with clinical diagnosis of at least one epidermal cyst, aged between 18 and 70 years were enrolled. A standardized procedure was used. After administrati

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare disorder predominantly seen in patients with chronic kidney disease. Calcification of cutaneous vessels leads to extremely painful plaques and ulcerations. Mortality is high, sepsis being the leading cause of death. There is no standardized treatment. In the last years, administration of sodium thiosulfate (STS) has yielded some promising results.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected data of eight calciphylaxis patients treated with STS at the University Hospital of Leuven between June 2009 and June 2014.
RESULTS: Eight patients, of whom two without relat

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare idiopathic inflammatory myopathy characterized by cutaneous and muscle manifestations. The association between DM and malignancy has been well recognized for many years. The clinical course of paraneoplastic DM may be affected by malignancies, although the cause and effect relationship between exacerbation of DM and cancer progression is uncertain. Herein, we report a 44-year-old woman who presented with progressive DM associated with rectal cancer. After curative resection of rectal cancer, DM symptoms resolved. Three months after surgery, blood test surveillanc

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is now a well-established treatment modality for cutaneous carcinomas and is based on the administration of a light-activated drug followed by illumination of the pathological area. The treatment of metastatic melanoma remains a therapeutic challenge. To define the possible role of melanin in relative phototoxicity of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a photosensitizer used in PDT in vivo, we studied cell death in two variants (with or without melanin, B16F10 and B16G4F cells, respectively) of a melanoma cell line. Concentrations of 5-Ala up to 10 mM induced similar cyt

Although asymptomatic joint involvement and arthralgias are frequent in patients with hepatitis C virus chronic infection (HCV), a true arthritis affects only up to 4% of the subjects. HCV-related arthritis (HCVrA) is usually distinguished in two clinical subsets: a more frequent symmetrical polyarthritis (SP), similar to rheumatoid arthritis but much less serious, and an intermittent mono-oligoarthritis (IMO) that involves medium and large sized joints, mainly the ankle. This latter subset is strictly related to the presence of HCV-induced mixed cryoglobulinemia and its cutaneous manifestatio

Dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Regarding motor disability, deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an effective treatment option in long lasting PD. The aims of this study were to examine whether STN stimulation has an influence on functions of the ANS and to compare these effects to those induced by levodopa. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during rest and orthostatic conditions, HR variability (HRV) and breathing-induced cutaneous sympathetic vasoconstriction (CVC) were tested in 14 PD patients treated wit

Identification and characterization of IgE-inducing antigens are important for elucidating the mechanisms involved in IgE-mediated immune responses in allergic diseases and parasite infections. While many allergens have been characterized, little is known about parasite antigens inducing specific IgE following infection. In order to identify antigens from the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, we generated an IgE-producing B cell hybridoma from N. brasiliensis-infected C57BL/6 mice and constructed a cDNA phage display library from N. brasiliensis. We successfully cloned and expressed an N.
