The diagnostic value of ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging in missed hand tendon injuries.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hand tendon injuries may present to the hand surgery clinic in the late stage after being examined in emergency departments. Even if an approximate idea has been obtained in physical examination of these patients, diagnostic imaging is usually requested for reconstructive approach, correct planning of surgical incisions and medicolegal reasons. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the overall accuracy of Ultrasonography (USG) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in patients with late presentation of a tendon injury. METHODS: The surgical findings and im

Pediatric spinal injuries- current concepts.

Spinal injuries in children contribute to the highest mortality and morbidity among all pediatric injuries. Fortunately, these injuries are a rare clinical entity but pose a difficulty in diagnosis due to challenges in neurological evaluation of a child and varied radiological presentation. Anatomical and biomechanical aspects of developing musculoskeletal system, relative plasticity of the pediatric spine make children vulnerable to spine injuries. Though motor vehicle collisions are common, children also suffer non-accidental trauma, falls and sports injuries. More chances of cervical spine

Anatomic Relationship of Hand Intrinsic Tendons at the Metacarpal Head as It Relates to the Diagnosis of Saddle Syndrome: A Cadaveric Study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this cadaveric study was to investigate the intrinsic anatomy surrounding the metacarpal head and the relationship between the interosseous-lumbrical junction (ILJ) and transverse metacarpal ligament (TML) as it pertains to saddle deformity-posttraumatic adhesions at the ILJ that cause impingement during intrinsic activation. METHODS: Ten fresh frozen cadaveric arms underwent dissections, identifying the intrinsic musculature within the second through fourth webspaces. The TML and ILJ, or "true tendon," were identified. A separate area of nontendinous fibrous tissue id

Measurement of Upper Airway Volume in Children with Craniofacial Abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE(S): Previous literature has established a high prevalence of upper airway obstruction in children with craniofacial abnormalities. This study aims to perform quantitative airway volume measurements in patients with craniofacial abnormalities and compare them to age and sex-matched controls. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the records of all children with craniofacial abnormalities who underwent head-and-neck computed tomography (CT) imaging at a single tertiary-care center between 1/1/13 and 12/31/20 using the ICD-10 codes Q75.1, Q75.4, and Q87.0. These patients were

Nerve relationships to the sacrospinous ligament: application to suspension procedures and transgluteal approaches for nerve repair and tumor removal with three case illustrations.

BACKGROUND: Transvaginal suspension procedures often use the sacrospinous ligament (SSL), which attaches onto the ischial spine (IS). However, nerve-related sequelae (e.g., sciatic nerve injury) following such procedures have been reported. Therefore, the current anatomical study was performed to better understand these relationships. Additionally, three case illustrations of patients with injury to the sciatic nerve following sacrospinous ligament suspension procedures are included to exemplify the significance of a thorough knowledge of this anatomy. METHODS: In 20 human adult cadavers (40

The influence of white matter lesions on the electric field in transcranial electric stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising tool to enhance therapeutic efforts, for instance, after a stroke. The achieved stimulation effects exhibit high inter-subject variability, primarily driven by perturbations of the induced electric field (EF). Differences are further elevated in the aging brain due to anatomical changes such as atrophy or lesions. Informing tDCS protocols by computer-based, individualized EF simulations is a suggested measure to mitigate this variability. OBJECTIVE: While brain anatomy in general and specifically atrophy as well as stro

Monitoring tissue engineered constructs and protocols with laboratory-based x-ray phase contrast tomography.

Tissue engineering (TE) aims to generate bioengineered constructs which can offer a surgical treatment for many conditions involving tissue or organ loss. Construct generation must be guided by suitable assessment tools. However, most current tools (e.g. histology) are destructive, which restricts evaluation to a single-2D anatomical plane, and has no potential for assessing constructs prior to or following their implantation. An alternative can be provided by laboratory-based x-ray phase contrast computed tomography (PC-CT), which enables the extraction of 3D density maps of an organ's anatom

Correlation of Nasal Mucosal Temperature and Nasal Patency-A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study.

OBJECTIVES: Recent evidence suggests that detection of nasal mucosal temperature, rather than direct airflow detection, is the primary determinant of subjective nasal patency. This study examines the role of nasal mucosal temperature in the perception of nasal patency using in vivo and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) measurements. METHODS: Healthy adult participants completed Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaires. A temperature probe measured nasal mucosal temperature at the vestibule, inferior turbinate, middle turbinate, and nasopharyn

Serotonin transporter binding in major depressive disorder: impact of serotonin system anatomy.

Serotonin transporter (5-HTT) binding deficits are reported in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, most studies have not considered serotonin system anatomy when parcellating brain regions of interest (ROIs). We now investigate 5-HTT binding in MDD in two novel ways: (1) use of a 5-HTT tract-based analysis examining binding along serotonergic axons; and (2) using the Copenhagen University Hospital Neurobiology Research Unit (NRU) 5-HT Atlas, based on brain-wide binding patterns of multiple serotonin receptor types. [11C]DASB 5-HTT PET scans were obtained in 60 unmedicated participants wi

Good outcomes after pediatric intraperitoneal kidney transplant.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation in small children is technically challenging. Consideration of whether to use intraperitoneal versus extraperitoneal placement of the graft depends on patient size, clinical history, anatomy, and surgical preference. We report a large single-center experience of intraperitoneal kidney transplantation and their outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric patients who underwent kidney transplantation from April 2011 to March 2018 at a single large volume center. We identified those with intraperitoneal placement and assessed their outco

Survival After Intervention for Single-Ventricle Heart Disease Over 15 Years at a Single Institution.

BACKGROUND: Children with single-ventricle (SV) heart disease possess a spectrum of heart malformations, yet progress through similar hemodynamic states, suggesting differences in outcomes are related to fundamental morphologic differences, patient characteristics, or procedural pathways. We sought to provide a holistic overview of survival after intervention for SV heart disease at our institution. METHODS: SV heart disease was defined as patients born with a hypoplastic or dysfunctional ventricle with uncertain or unacceptable candidacy for a 2-ventricle circulation. Patients were stratifie

Recovery of the medial gastrocnemius muscle after calcaneus fracture differs between contractile and elastic components.

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal fractures result in severe functional impairments and walking restrictions. Postoperative evaluation mainly focusses on the restoration of calcaneal anatomy while ankle plantar flexor insufficiency remains largely neglected. This study aims to investigate biomechanical and morphologic adaptions of elastic and contractile components of the gastrocnemius medialis after unilateral calcaneal fracture. METHODS: 20 Patients (BMI: 27.6 ± 3.1 kgm-2, Age: 50 ± 12 years) were measured using gait analysis and portable ultrasound over a follow-up of three, six and twelve months afte

Influence of Nonsyndromic Bicoronal Synostosis and Syndromic Influences on Orbit and Periorbital Malformation.

BACKGROUND: Oculoorbital disproportion in patients with craniosynostosis has similarities and dissimilarities between syndromic and nonsyndromic cases. The authors hypothesized that these two conditions have specific individual influences as they relate to development of the orbital and periorbital skeletons. METHODS: A total of 133 preoperative computed tomography scans (nonsyndromic bicoronal synostosis, n = 38; Apert syndrome bicoronal synostosis subtype, n = 33; Crouzon syndrome bicoronal synostosis subtype, n = 10; controls, n = 52) were included. Application of the new 'XU-line' in the dynamic ultrasonographic evaluation of the spatial displacement of anterior cervical tissues for airway management: protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with cervical spondylosis have a high incidence of difficult airway, and unpredicted difficult intubation may be life-threatening. Traditional predictors and imaging data may suggest a difficult airway, but these data have limited predictive value, with low sensitivity and specificity. Ultrasonography is a non-irradiating, reproducible, inexpensive and simple tool that provides good imaging of the cervical soft tissue for airway assessment. This study will use the new 'XU-line' in the dynamic ultrasonographic airway evaluation of the spatial displacement of the anterior

Biomechanical impact of the porous-fibrous tissue behaviour in the temporomandibular joint movements. An in silico approach.

The movement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a function of its complex geometry and its interaction with the surrounding soft tissues. Owing to an increase in the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), many computational studies have attempted to characterize its biomechanical behaviour in the last 2 decades. However, most such studies are based on a single computational model that markedly simplifies the complex geometry and mechanical properties of the TMJ's soft tissues. The present study aims to computationally evaluate in a wider sample the importance of consideri
