Correlates of sleep and pediatric bipolar disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine, based on a large community sample, the prevalence and associated sleep characteristics of children with a bipolar mood disturbance behavioral profile. METHODS: Participants who fit the pediatric bipolar disorder profile as derived from the Child Behavior Checklist were matched to control participants for age, sex, ethnicity, parentally reported attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, psychotropic medication usage, and apnea-hypopnea indexes. Paired comparisons were made between the groups to examine differences on polysomnographic data and parentally reported

Effects of acute sleep restriction on behavior, sustained attention, and response inhibition in children.

This study examined the effects of acute sleep restriction on the day-time behavior and performance of healthy children and adolescents. 82 participants (8 to 15 years of age) completed 5 nights of baseline sleep and were randomly assigned to Optimized (10 hr.) or Restricted (4 hr.) sleep for an overnight lab visit. Behavior, performance, and sleepiness were assessed the following day. Sleep restriction was associated with shorter daytime sleep latency, increased subjective sleepiness, and increased sleepy and inattentive behaviors but was not associated with increased hyperactive-impulsive be

Pathways from ADHD to early drug use.

OBJECTIVE: This study tests whether attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increases the risk of early drug use. METHOD: A community-based sample of 412 low birth weight and 305 normal birth weight children and their mothers initially were assessed when the children were 6 years old with a follow-up assessment at age 11. RESULTS: The relationship of ADHD with drug use varied by level of externalizing problems. Regardless of ADHD status, children with a low level of externalizing problems had a low risk of drug use, and those with the highest level of externalizing problems had a hig

Impaired neuropsychological functioning in Tourette's syndrome subjects with co-occurring obsessive-compulsive and attention deficit symptoms.

This study examined neuropsychological performance by 92 children with Tourette's syndrome (TS) grouped by the presence or absence of obsessive-compulsive and/or attention deficit symptoms. The identified groups did not differ with respect to age, education, age at onset of TS symptoms, or medication use. After statistical control for complex motor symptoms, impaired performance on measures of achievement and executive functioning was correlated with obsessive and obsessive/attention symptoms, but not with attention symptoms alone. The presence of both obsessive and attention symptoms identifi

Psychiatric disorders in sexually abused children.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in a clinical sample of sexually abused children referred for outpatient evaluation. Two a priori hypotheses were tested: (1) the sexually abused group would have more post-traumatic stress disorder than the non-sexually abused group and (2) non-sexually abused children referred for evaluation would have more diagnoses than the sexually abused group. METHODS: Twenty-six sexually abused children and 23 non-sexually abused children referred for psychiatric outpatient evaluation at a medical school center were

Multiple aspects of headache risk in children.

Both epidemiological and pharmacoclinical research have been carried out on children suffering from headache. Two epidemiological trials were performed. In the first, 562 migrainous children were questioned about several clinical symptoms that affect child headache suffers, and the incidence of these symptoms was recorded. In the second, we divided 504 nonselected school children into three groups: headache sufferers and nonheadache sufferers with or without family headache history. The same clinical symptoms were studied. Statistical analysis showed that motion sickness, recurrent abdominal p

[Mental and neurocognitive diseases and diabetes mellitus (Update 2026)].

Diabetes mellitus is frequently associated with mental diseases. Depressive disorders are twice as frequent in patients with diabetes compared to the nondiabetic population. Other mental diseases that frequently occur with diabetes and prediabetes are cognitive impairment up to dementia, disturbed eating behavior, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and borderline personality disorder. The unfavorable effects of these comorbidities on metabolism are lasting and are manifested as poorer metabolic control and increased microangiopa

Risk of suicide attempt with gender diversity and neurodiversity.

There is growing concern about psychiatric illness co-occurring with gender-diversity and neurodiversity, including risk of suicidal behavior. We carried out systematic reviews of research literature pertaining to suicide attempt rates in association with gender- and neurodiversity, with meta-analysis of findings. Rates of suicidal acts ranked: gender-diverse versus controls (20.1% vs. 1.90%; highly significant) > autism spectrum disorder (4.51% vs. 1.00%; highly significant) > attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (7.52% vs. 4.09%; not significant). Attempt rates also were greater among co

Improvement in health-related quality of life in children with ADHD: an analysis of placebo controlled studies of atomoxetine.

Despite significant functional impairments associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the growing appreciation of the importance of health-related quality of life (HRQL) assessment in children with chronic disorders, relatively few studies have examined the impact of ADHD treatment on HRQL. This investigation examines the effect of atomoxetine, a nonstimulant treatment for ADHD, on HRQL and identifies factors that are predictive of HRQL improvements. The Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ), which is a multidimensional HRQL measure, was collected during three randomized, d

A transdiagnostic study of theory of mind in children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) is fundamental for social interactions, allowing individuals to appreciate that others have their own mental states. Children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)) often show differences in ToM abilities compared to their neurotypical (NT) peers. Given the phenotypic heterogeneity and overlap associated with these conditions, this motivates a transdiagnostic investigation of ToM across neurodevelopmental conditions. METHODS: Five hundred and fifty-fi

Linking Genome-Wide Association Studies to Pharmacological Treatments for Psychiatric Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) should ideally inform the development of pharmacological treatments, but whether GWAS-identified mechanisms of disease liability correspond to the pathophysiological processes targeted by current pharmacological treatments is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether functional information from a range of open bioinformatics datasets can elucidate the relationship between GWAS-identified genetic variation and the genes targeted by current treatments for psychiatric disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Associations betwe

We've all been wrong about provisional tic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Provisional Tic Disorder (PTD) is common in childhood. The received wisdom among clinicians is that PTD is short-lived and mild, with at most a few tics, and rarely includes complex tics, premonitory phenomena or comorbid illnesses. However, such conclusions come from clinical experience, with biased ascertainment and limited follow-up. METHODS: Prospective study of 89 children with tics starting 0-9 months ago (median 4 months), fewer than half from clinical sources. Follow-up at 12 (± 24, 36, 48) months after the first tic. RESULTS: At study entry, many children had ADHD (39),

[Cognitive dysfunction in fibromyalgia].

INTRODUCTION: People with a fibromyalgia diagnosis complain of having very poor cognitive functioning. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest to investigate which cognitive impairment is present in this disease. AIM: To review the published research on fibromyalgia and cognitive dysfunction. DEVELOPMENT: A literature search was performed with a time interval from 1995 to 2012. Search terms included the keywords 'fibromyalgia' and 'cognition', 'attention', 'memory', 'language', 'perception', 'executive functions' and 'dis-executive syndrome'. 64 records were selected after app

[Neurofeedback and personal development].

BACKGROUND: Development of neurofeedback was preceded by development of classical and quantitative EEG, construction of computer devices, programmes and individual medical protocols. METHODS: The basic rule of this method is to achieve effective change of rhythm and power of brain bioelectric activity based on knowledge of normal activity and identification of abnormalities of present activity. Various types of disturbed activity occur in many syndromes and brain development disorders. Training process is characterized by repetitive local activation of chosen brain structures as well as by ge

The potential of trace amines and their receptors for treating neurological and psychiatric diseases.

Mining of the human genome has revealed approximately 7000 novel proteins, which could serve as potential targets for the development of novel therapeutics. Of these, approximately 2000 are predicted to be G-protein coupled receptors. Within this group of proteins, a family of 18 mammalian receptors has recently been identified that appear to exhibit selectivity toward the so-called trace amines. The trace amines are a family of endogenous compounds with strong structural similarity to classical monoamine neurotransmitters, consisting primarily of 2-phenylethylamine, m- and p-tyramine, tryptam

Is there really a schizophrenia? The long-term course of psychotic phenomena.

The author fundamentally questions the traditional concept of the disease-entity (or several disease entities) of 'schizophrenia' and discusses an alternative concept, based on vulnerability and information-processing. According to this, schizophrenia-like psychotic phenomena develop in three phases. In the first, premorbid phase, combined biological (genetic and possibly other organic) and psycho-social influences lead to a premorbid 'vulnerability', characterised by a low tolerance of cognitive and emotional stress, corresponding to an insufficient capacity for the adequate processing of com
