BACKGROUND: Anatomic double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction provides excellent results for restoring normal kinematics to the knee. Nevertheless, strong evidence supporting an ideal method for fixation of the ACL graft is lacking.
HYPOTHESIS: Intratunnel femoral fixation of the ACL graft via a cross-pin fixation technique would provide better clinical and objective results than the extratunnel femoral fixation with cortical buttons.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial; Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: Seventy patients with a unilateral ACL-deficient knee were random

Fractures at the coxal end of the femur have an incidence of almost 100.000 p.a. in Germany. Pertrochanteric femur fractures make up almost half of this collective. The highest incidence of 1.32% is seen in patients over the age of 85. Osteosynthesis is the treatment of choice. The options include extramedullary nail/screw systems or intramedullary nail systems. Study findings to date do not show a clear advantage of one procedure over another. The published complication rates remain high. The main complication is secondary reduction loss with cutout of the hip screw. Other complications inclu

We report our result of the reinforced sternal closure in 51 consecutive patients. We applied a new type of absorbable radiopaque pins (Super FIXSORB) composed of poly-lactide acid and hydroxyapatite, in addition to conventional stainless steel wires. The risk scores of our patients were calculated from the simplified risk scoring system for major infection based on the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Cardiac Database. The expected probability of infection is significantly higher than the actual infection rate in our patients. Our procedure may contribute to minimizing the fatal sternal

The incidence of osteoporotic fractures of the distal humerus is increasing, and the treatment of these injuries merits closer review. We assessed the results of 28 elderly patients (29 fractures) with a mean age of 85 years (range, 75-100 years). Open reduction and internal fixation was done on 21 elbows, and eight elbows were treated nonoperatively. Orthopaedic Trauma Association grading showed that the group treated with internal fixation had favorable results (three excellent, nine good, seven fair, and two poor) compared with the nonoperatively treated group (zero excellent, two good, thr

The purposes of using Harrington instrumentation for the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures are to reduce the fracture, decompress the spinal canal, create stability at the fracture site, and shorten the hospitalization period. However, technical problems or the injudicious use of Harrington-instrumentation systems can also complicate the management of these fractures. We have studied forty patients (forty-five Harrington-instrumentation stabilization procedures) who had significant complications. Twenty-six of the thirty patients who were followed for more than two years required additional

BACKGROUND: Small case series suggest that preoperative transcatheter arterial embolization minimizes bleeding and facilitates surgery for hypervascular metastatic bone tumors. However, control groups would make our confidence in clinical recommendations stronger, but small patient numbers make prospective trials difficult to conduct on this topic.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In this case-control study, we asked whether (1) patients who undergo embolization have less estimated blood loss and/or shorter operative time than patients who do not have embolization; (2) larger tumor size, greater initial t

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are common diseases in elderly patients and can cause serious thoracolumbar compression fractures. For patients with such fractures, conservative treatment, nail-stick fixation, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) can be selected as treatment methods. In this study, we aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of PKP and PVP in the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one patients with single-stage osteoporotic vertebral
