Blood samples from 21 patients with confirmed hereditary spherocytosis (HS) were studied using the Technicon H1 blood counter. Nine patients had had a splenectomy and 12 were unsplenectomized. Thirteen normal subjects and thirteen subjects with bona fide keratoconjunctivitis sicca were examined employing wide-field colour specular microscopy of the corneal epithelium. The prevalence of small, medium and large cells is different in these two groups with a shift to small cells in patients with keratoconjunctivitis. Increased rose bengal dye uptake filaments, coarse mucus plaques and pre-exfoliative sheets are also seen in keratoconjunctivitis sicca. These findings suggest an accelerated epithelial cell loss from the surface of the eye in keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Mollaret's meningitis (benign recurrent aseptic meningitis) is a rare syndrome with characteristic features. A volumeter technique was used to estimate the density of the two main tissue components of the parathyroid gland--parenchymal and fat tissue. The difference in density between the two components was distinct (1.06 and 0.93 g/ml) and measurements of the weight and volume of parathyroid glands could therefore be utilized in calculating their parenchymal tissue content. From plains histologic preparations of children's testicles the volume of seminiferous tubules and extratubular tissue were calculated by use of the points counting method. In ectopic testicles, the extratubular part is significantly larger than in normally descended testes. The range of the values measured by this method diminishes the higher the total count of test points is. The 25-points-test-net of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena in particular met all requirements for quantitative examinations of the morphology of testicles.
