Motilin is a regulator of gastric contraction in Japanese fire belly newts (Cynops pyrrhogaster), in vitro studies using isolated gastrointestinal strips of newts, rabbits, and chickens.

The effects of newt motilin on the contractility of the isolated gastrointestinal (GI) tract from Japanese fire belly newts (newt) were examined to clarify whether motilin regulates GI motility in urodele amphibians. In addition, contractile responsiveness to motilins from seven species of vertebrates (human, chicken, turtle, alligator, axolotol, newt and zebrafish) were compared in GI preparations from three different animals (rabbit duodenum, chicken ileum and newt stomach) to determine the species-specific action of motilin. Newt motilin (10-10 M - 10-6 M) caused a contraction of cognate ga

Corrigendum to "Which factor is more important for the welfare of broiler chickens: Intensity or duration of episodic heat stress?" [J. Therm. Biol. 99 (2021) 102981].

Due to the effects of global warming, there is a predicted increase in the frequency, intensity and duration of heat waves in the future. Little is known of how this could affect the welfare of broiler chickens. Sixty-four broiler chickens were subjected to either high heat stress (HHS; 32oC, 70% RH for 3 h), moderate heat stress (MHS; 30oC, 70% RH for 6 h), or normal conditions (NC: 20oC, 50% RH for 6 h) for two consecutive days. Half the birds had been subjected to anaesthesia and fitted with a body temperature-ID chip placed in the breast muscle. Core body temperature (CBT) was taken during…

Characterization of antibody response to an epitope spanning the haemagglutinin cleavage site of H7N9 subtype avian influenza virus for the differentiation of infected and vaccinated chickens.

H7N9 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) is endemic in poultry in China, and vaccination is used as the primary strategy for disease control … lts showed that the H7N9 virus infection sera and post-challenge sera obtained from H7N9-vaccinated chickens reacted with peptide 11, whereas the sera elicited by inactivated and viral-vectored H7N9 vaccines had no reactivity with this peptide. Peptide 11 was further split into two peptides at the HA cleavage site, and the truncated peptides failed to disc …

A Dietary Sugarcane-Derived Polyphenol Mix Reduces the Negative Effects of Cyclic Heat Exposure on Growth Performance, Blood Gas Status, and Meat Quality in Broiler Chickens.

Heat stress (HS) compromises growth performance and meat quality of broiler chickens by interrupting lipid and protein metabolism, resulting in increased oxidative damages. The experiment attempted to investigate whether dietary polyphenols (Polygain (POL)) could ameliorate the aforementioned adverse effects of HS on performance and meat quality. One hundred and twenty one day-old-male chicks were allocated to two temperature conditions, thermoneutral (TN) or HS, and fed with either a control diet (CON) or the CON plus four different doses of POL (2, 4, 6 and 10 g/kg). Heat stress caused respi…

Effect of vitamin E sources and inclusion levels in diets on growth performance, meat quality, alpha-tocopherol retention, and intestinal inflammatory cytokine expression in broiler chickens.

Water-miscible vitamin E (WVE) has been known to be more bioavailable than conventional lipid-soluble vitamin E (LVE) in human foods because of its greater solubility in the gastrointestinal tract. However, no data regarding the comparison of the efficacy of WVE to LVE were available in poultry diets. The objective of the current experiment was to investigate the effect of vitamin E (VE) sources and inclusion levels in diets on growth performance, meat quality, alpha-tocopherol retention, and intestinal inflammatory cytokine expression in broiler chickens. Arginine vasotocin (AVT)/mesotocin (MT) receptors in chickens: Evidence for the possible involvement of AVT-AVPR1 signaling in the regulation of oviposition and pituitary prolactin expression.

Two structurally related peptides, arginine vasotocin (AVT) and mesotocin (MT), are reported to regulate many physiological processes, such as anti-diuresis and oviposition in birds, and their actions are likely mediated by four AVT/MT receptors (AVPR1A, AVPR1B, MTR and AVPR2b), which are orthologous/paralogous to human AVPR1A, AVPR1B, OXTR and AVPR2 respectively. However, our knowledge regarding the functions of these avian AVT/MT receptors has been limited. Here, we examined the functionality and expression of these receptors in chickens and investigated the roles of AVT in the anterior pitu…

Co-infections of chickens with avian influenza virus H9N2 and Moroccan Italy 02 infectious bronchitis virus: effect on pathogenesis and protection conferred by different vaccination programmes.

Since the emergence of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2 viruses in Morocco in 2016, severe respiratory problems have been encountered in the field. Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is often detected together with H9N2, suggesting disease exacerbation in cases of co-infections. This hypothesis was therefore tested and confirmed in laboratory conditions using specific-pathogen-free chickens. Most common field vaccine programmes were then tested to compare their efficacies against these two co-infecting agents. IBV γCoV/chicken/Morocco/I38/2014 (Mor-IT02) and LPAI virus A/chicken/Moroc…

A comparative analysis of host responses to avian influenza infection in ducks and chickens highlights a role for the interferon-induced transmembrane proteins in viral resistance.

BACKGROUND: Chickens are susceptible to infection with a limited number of Influenza A viruses and are a potential source of a human influenza pandemic. In particular, H5 and H7 haemagglutinin subtypes can evolve from low to highly pathogenic strains in gallinaceous poultry. Ducks on the other hand are a natural reservoir for these viruses and are able to withstand most avian influenza strains. RESULTS: Transcriptomic sequencing of lung and ileum tissue samples from birds infected with high (H5N1) and low (H5N2) pathogenic influenza viruses has allowed us to compare the early host response to…
