Alzheimer's disease is a progressive degenerative disease with cognitive and behavioral manifestations. The pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease is increasingly well understood, leading to approved and experimental therapies. Mutations on chromosomes 1, 14, and 21 can cause the disease and are sometimes present in patients with early onset Alzheimer's disease. Older patients--comprising the majority of Alzheimer's disease victims--have a variety of risk factors including age, gender, history of head trauma, low education level, and apolipoprotein genotype. The pathogenetic process leads to r

OBJECTIVE: Functional seizures (FS) often disrupt the key regions integral to cognitive processing and emotional regulation (anterior insula, anterior cingulate, and temporoparietal junction). We investigated the potential neurophysiologic mechanism of action (MOA) of neurobehavioral therapy (NBT) using resting-state functional MRI seed-based whole-brain functional connectivity within these regions in adults with FS. We hypothesized that NBT would induce changes in functional connectivity in parallel with improving seizure frequency and behavioral outcomes.
METHODS: Forty patients with trauma

Delirium is an acute neuropsychiatric condition characterized by impaired behavior and cognition. Although the syndrome has been known for millennia, its CNS mechanisms and risk factors remain poorly understood. Experimental animal models, especially rodent-based, are commonly used to probe various pathogenetic aspects of delirium. Complementing rodents, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) emerges as a promising novel model organism to study delirium. Zebrafish demonstrate high genetic and physiological homology to mammals, easy maintenance, robust behaviors in various sensitive behavioral tests, and

Both psychodynamic and social-cognitive theoretical domains have control process models of behavior but with different ideas about the purpose and loci of control. This study examines expressive and defensive behaviors associated with different topics of discourse in the time-limited psychotherapy of a woman treated for pathological grief. Conceptually the study is based on a model of defensive control processes that integrates states of mind and person schemas. Theoretically derived measures of discourse topics, verbal and nonverbal defensive behaviors, emotional disclosure, and states of min

The central nervous system (CNS) orchestrates homeostatic responses and organismal behaviors by integrating cues from the whole body. Like other peripheral tissues, skeletal muscle can signal to the brain, and this occurs via muscle-secreted signaling factors (myokines/myometabolites). In this review article, we examine exercise-induced myokines and myometabolites that improve cognitive capacity and impede neurodegeneration and, conversely, detrimental myokines secreted by diseased muscles that negatively impact brain function. Cellular processes modulated by myokines in the CNS include proteo

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory impairment. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of streptozotocin (STZ) in rodents recapitulates key features of sporadic AD, including brain insulin resistance and oxidative stress. Dexmedetomidine (Dex), a highly selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has demonstrated neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting its potential utility as a therapeutic approach for AD.
METHODS: Seventy adult male Wistar rats were

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome driven by a dysregulated host response to infection and is frequently complicated by sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE), which contributes to long-term cognitive and neuropsychiatric sequelae. Despite advances in critical care, effective targeted therapies for SAE remain limited. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4), the predominant astrocytic water channel, plays a central role in cerebral water homeostasis, neuroinflammatory signaling, and blood-brain barrier integrity, suggesting its potential involvement in sepsis-induced cerebral dysfunction and neurorepair process

Practicing CBT skills outside of therapy sessions is a core component of effective treatment, yet meaningful engagement can be difficult during periods of elevated psychological distress. Smartphone-based ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) offer a promising approach to support real-time skill use, but most research has focused on frequency rather than quality of engagement. This study examined the quality of CBT skills practice in a 28-day smartphone-based EMI following inpatient discharge and explored its associations with internal context and intervention effectiveness. Alzheimer's disease (AD) imposes a heavy burden on families and society. Rhythmic magnetic stimulation has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapy to mitigate AD-related cognitive decline. In this study, we applied a rhythmic unipolar compound pulsed magnetic field (cPMF; carrier frequency: 40 Hz, repetition rate: 5 Hz, magnetic flux density: 0-20 mT) incorporating both theta and gamma rhythms to evaluate its effects on behavior and neural oscillations in AD mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms. 5xFAD mice received unipolar cPMF stimulation for 1 h/d over 8 consecutive weeks. BACKGROUND: Deriving novel treatments for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is of critical importance, as existing treatments are only modestly effective for reducing drinking. Two promising strategies for treating AUDs include cognitive bias modification (CBM) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). While each strategy has shown positive results in reducing drinking or alcohol-related constructs (e.g., craving), initial tests of the combination of CBM and tDCS have shown mixed results. The present study investigated the degree to which combining CBM and tDCS (2.0 mA anodal current over

BACKGROUND: Although efficacious treatments for major depression are available, efficacy is suboptimal and recurrence is common. Effective preventive strategies could reduce disability associated with the disorder, but current options are limited. Cognitive bias modification (CBM) is a novel and safe intervention that attenuates biases associated with depression. This study investigated whether the delivery of a CBM programme designed to attenuate negative cognitive biases over a period of 1 year would decrease the incidence of major depression among adults with subthreshold symptoms of depres

The incidence of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease, characterized by a progressive cognitive decline, is rising worldwide. Despite the considerable efforts to unveil the neuropsychological bases of these diseases, there is still an unmet medical need for effective therapies against cognitive deficits. In recent years, increasing laboratory evidence indicates the potential of phytotherapy as an integrative aid to improve cognitive functions. In this review, we describe the data of plant whole extracts or single compounds' efficacy on validated preclinical model
