Shattered Chains: Shedding Light on Child Sexual Abuse in the Black Community.

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) remains deeply silenced in many Black communities, where cultural stigma, historical trauma, and systemic mistrust often discourage disclosure and limit access to supportive resources. These barriers contribute to delayed intervention, untreated trauma, and long-term psychological, emotional, and relational harms. This theoretical manuscript synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to examine CSA disclosure among Black children through three interconnected frameworks: Critical Race Theory, Attachment Theory, and Trauma-Informed Care, which illuminate how structural ra

Sobremesa: Healing, Identity, and Connection Through Community Conversations in Latine Spaces.

Sobremesa is a community-based initiative centered on emotional well-being, cultural connection, and collective care. Created by first-generation, bilingual Latine social workers in partnership with SOMOSLOUD, this Chicagobased series brings Latine adults together for monthly gatherings grounded in food, conversation, and cultural traditions. Rather than replicating clinical spaces, Sobremesa offers an informal yet intentional setting where participants can reflect, listen, and connect across English, Spanish, and Spanglish. Each gathering includes a grounding or healing activity, small-group

Consensus Definition for Community-acquired Pneumonia in Children Using a Delphi Approach.

BACKGROUND: Although community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the most common infections in children, no standardized criteria for diagnosis exist. The objective of this study was to develop expert consensus for the diagnosis of pediatric CAP in countries with a high level of access to health care. METHODS: Using a web-based classic Delphi approach, a multidisciplinary panel of childhood pneumonia experts rated clinical, radiographic and laboratory criteria relevant to pediatric pneumonia diagnosis. Round 1 was open-ended, with panelists freely stating all characteristics they thought def

Microbial communities and volatile profiles heterogeneity in a Mars-analogue volcanic lake.

Analyses of the Martian surface suggest the existence of sedimentary lacustrine deposits that may have once harboured life. Lake Bagno dell'Acqua (Pantelleria, Italy) represents an optimal planetary field analogue for investigating the evolution and adaptation of life in Mars-like environments and for validating potential life-detection strategies. Accordingly, we characterised microbial communities and volatile organic compound profiles in actively growing organosedimentary structures within lake sediments and in biofilm covering hot springs at the lake margins. The microbial communities exhi

Assembly Dynamics and Functional Divergence of Anaerobic Communities Driven by Iron Oxides.

Iron oxides play an important role in regulating global biogeochemical cycles, yet how their physicochemical properties influence community structure, function, and assembly remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of four representative iron oxides-ferrihydrite (Fh), goethite (Gt), haematite (Ht), and magnetite (Mt)-serving as terminal electron acceptors on microbial communities enriched from activated sludge. Metagenomic profiling revealed mineral-dependent divergence in community composition and functional potential. The communities developed on amorphous Fh demonstrated

[Evaluation of a family-community workshop on birth and death: impact on parental attitudes].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a community-based workshop on birth and death, delivered by midwives for children aged 6 to 12 accompanied by one or both parents. Specifically, to analyse the adults' evaluation of the workshop and whether it modifies their attitudes towards how to approach these processes with children. METHOD: Evaluative non-experimental pre-post intervention and qualitative study conducted in community settings across nine Spanish provinces, primarily in Cantabria. Mothers and fathers (n=185) accompanied by their children (aged 6-12, n=218) attended the workshop "To be born, to die,

Metatranscriptomic characterization of active microbial communities in strawberry hydroponic drainage effluent.

Hydroponic cultivation systems improve water and nutrient use efficiency; however, little is known about the active microbial communities inhabiting hydroponic drainage effluent. This study employed metatranscriptomic sequencing to characterize active microbial communities present in drainage effluent collected from strawberry cultivation beds within a commercial recirculating hydroponic system. Drainage effluent samples were collected during the spring and winter cultivation periods and subjected to RNA-based metatranscriptomic analysis. Following quality filtering, de novo assembly, and taxo

Chronic Alcohol Consumption Reprograms Osteoclast Lineage Communications to Promote Osteoclastogenesis.

Chronic alcohol consumption increases the risk of osteoporosis and fracture by disrupting bone remodeling, in part by enhancing osteoclastogenesis. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying this process remain incompletely defined. We analyzed scRNA-seq data from osteoclasts differentiated in vitro from bone marrow mononuclear cells obtained from macaques following 12 months of chronic ethanol or isocaloric control solution consumption. Module scoring, trajectory inference with generalized additive modeling (tradeSeq), and CellChat-based analyses of intercellular communication were applied t

Dynamics of infectious disease spread between transportation hubs and surrounding communities.

Urban transit systems, particularly those in major metropolitan areas, are becoming increasingly interconnected, making it essential to better understand passenger mobility and its implications for the spread of infectious diseases. Respiratory infectious diseases, including COVID-19 (as a case study), can spread rapidly in densely populated urban environments, particularly within public transportation systems. This study investigates the dynamics of infection spread at a subway station, and its surrounding community, focusing on both short-term and long-term transmission. Using two determinis

Patient and Clinician Perspectives on Chronic Pain Communication in Advanced Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is highly prevalent among older adults with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD stage 4, stage 5, and end-stage kidney disease [ESKD]). Yet, pain management involves a delicate balance between alleviating symptoms and avoiding harm related to impaired renal drug clearance and the high risk of medication side effects. Because little is known about how patients and clinicians navigate these complex pain management conversations, we examined patient and provider perspectives on communication and decision making in chronic pain and advanced kidney disease. METHODS: We co

Potential limitations of community-wide strategy to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

A quarter of the world's population has immunologic evidence of past or present Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ) infection ( MTBI ) detected as TST or IGRA positivity. Community-based preventive treatment of individuals with MTBI has resulted in transient decreases in TB cases, but its long-term effectiveness has been controversial. Due to the likelihood that many of those with immune responses to Mtb antigens may no longer harbor Mtb, widespread treatment of all such individuals may result in unnecessary exposure to antibiotics. We raise an additional concern that preventive treatment of in

Joint Disease and Demographic Factors in Clinical Populations of Medically Underserved Communities.

BACKGROUND: The Rio Grande Valley is a medically underserved, demographically unique population that warrants the exploration of various conditions. OBJECTIVES: We sought to analyze the demographic disparities between the different types of common joint conditions in this community. We hypothesized that osteoarthritis would be the most common joint condition and that the demographics between the various joint conditions would vary depending on age, sex, BMI, and ethnicity. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort, from January 1, 2018, to September 4, 2024. Patients' charts were obtained usi
