Bridging the gap in riverine greenhouse gas research: From monitoring methods to mechanistic understanding.

Despite their increasing recognition in global greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets, riverine emission estimates face challenges from data gaps and methodological inconsistencies. To evaluate these challenges, this study reviewed 568 publications on riverine emissions published from 2011 to 2024. We analyzed monitoring methods, influencing variables, data characteristics, and emission pathways, using PRISMA protocol. River research represents only 8 % of all aquatic GHG studies, with a strong geographical bias toward large rivers, especially in Asia (52 %). Small rivers remain underrepresented despite

Existing and emerging technologies in biohydrogen production: mechanisms and influential factors for sustainable energy transition.

Biological hydrogen (Bio-H₂) production is increasingly recognized as a key pathway for sustainable energy transition and circular resource utilization. This review presents a comprehensive and comparative synthesis of the three principal biological hydrogen production routes: dark fermentation (DF), photo-driven processes (biophotolysis and photo-fermentation), and bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), including microbial electrolysis and MFC-integrated configurations. The analysis systematically evaluates metabolic pathways, reactor configurations, operational parameters, and performance indica

Divergent mechanisms of menthol and tobacco e-cigarette toxicity in a 3D airway organoid model: Metabolic disruption and immunosuppression versus Th2-Allergic inflammation and apoptotic stress.

The increasing global use of e-cigarettes has raised concerns about their potential respiratory toxicity. While flavor additives such as menthol are widely used to enhance product appeal, their specific contributions to pulmonary injury remain poorly understood. In this study, we established a three-dimensional mouse airway organoid (MAO) model that recapitulates the structural and functional complexity of native airway epithelium. Using this physiologically relevant platform, we systematically compared the toxicological effects of aerosol extracts from tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarett

Immunomodulatory effects of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles on NLRP3 inflammasome activation in the adult mouse brain after chronic ethanol exposure.

Background NOD-like receptors (NLRs) and inflammasome complexes play critical roles in the neuroinflammatory responses triggered by chronic ethanol exposure. We previously demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) attenuated binge-like alcohol consumption-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation in the adolescent hippocampus; however, their broader effects on additional NLR pathways and brain regions remained unclear. Methods and Results This study investigates the therapeutic potential of intravenously administered adipose-derived MSC-EVs (20 µg/dose every

Preoperative Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methyl-Butyrate Supplementation Reduces Mitochondrial Dynamics Proteins and Preserves Hepatic Mitochondrial Function After Partial Hepatectomy in Mice.

AIM: The liver exhibits a remarkable regenerative capacity, enabling this organ to maintain homeostasis even after significant injury. However, hepatic regeneration requires sufficient energy to sustain cellular hypertrophy and proliferation, thus ensuring efficient tissue repair. Therefore, dietary modulation of pathways regulating mitochondrial quality may enhance liver regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of preoperative beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation on mitochondrial quality control pathways and its impact on the liver regeneration process in mi

Developmental Programming of Kidney Disease Across the Life Course: A Narrative Review Focused on Inflammation.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major global health burden, with growing evidence indicating that its origins extend back to early developmental stages. This narrative review integrates epidemiological, clinical, and mechanistic experimental evidence to position inflammation as a life-course driver of kidney vulnerability rather than a late-stage consequence. Inflammation has emerged as a central mechanistic link connecting adverse prenatal and postnatal exposures to lifelong kidney vulnerability. We highlight the translational potential by identifying pathways amenable to early-life

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Carcinogenesis: Molecular Mechanisms and the Preventive Roles of Phytochemicals Part I: Pathophysiological Mechanisms Linking Metabolic Dysfunction to Cancer.

The global cancer burden is projected to escalate to 27 million new cases annually by 2040, a trajectory that parallels the rising prevalence of obesity, metabolic dysfunction, and related metabolic disorders. While genetic and environmental factors are well-recognized, the systemic metabolic environment is increasingly identified as a critical determinant of tumorigenesis. This review (Part I) systematically delineates the molecular and cellular framework through which metabolic dysfunction orchestrates a tumor-permissive landscape. We evaluate six primary pathophysiological axes: (1) chronic

Hydrogen sulfide at the intersection of hypoxia and oxidative stress: implications for lung cancer progression and treatment - a narrative review.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with a pathogenesis deeply influenced by the tumor microenvironment. Two central and interrelated factors -hypoxia and oxidative stress - contribute significantly to tumor progression, angiogenesis, metabolic reprogramming, and therapeutic resistance. In recent years, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), traditionally viewed as a toxic gas, has gained recognition as a critical gasotransmitter with a regulatory role in both hypoxic and redox signaling pathways in cancer biology. Endogenously produced by enzymes such as CBS, CSE, and

The Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 positively regulates Cucumis sativus resistance against Bemisia tabaci by activating the plant defense system.

BACKGROUND: Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) are globally invasive agricultural pests that currently lack effective control measures. Cys2/His2-type zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) are ubiquitous transcription factors that play critical roles in regulating plant resistance to various stresses. However, it remains unclear whether these proteins modulate plant defense responses during whitefly infestation. This study investigates the function and mechanisms of the Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 in regulating cucumber resistance to B. tabaci. RESULTS: CsZAT10 contains two zinc fi

Spatial imaging of water oxidation on single-particle catalysts.

Water oxidation, widely recognized as the kinetic bottleneck of artificial photosynthesis, limits solar fuel efficiency. Despite progress in elucidating reaction mechanisms and theoretical predictions, the dynamic spatial coupling of charge transfer, localized structural motifs and active-site evolution remains unresolved, particularly as identified under operando conditions, obscuring key mechanistic pathways. Here, by integrating operando electrochemical shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with nanoscale electrochemical reaction imaging, we spatially resolve the atomic-sc

Age-Dependent Dynamics of the Biliary Microbiome in Children with Choledochal Cysts: Functional Remodeling Underlying Taxonomic Conservation.

Choledochal cyst (CC), a congenital biliary anomaly, is associated with recurrent infections, chronic inflammation, and an increased risk of malignancy. Although emerging evidence implicates the biliary microbiome in disease pathophysiology, its developmental dynamics in pediatric CC remain unclear. Using deep metagenomic sequencing and comprehensive functional annotation, this study characterized age-dependent changes in the biliary microbiome of 201 pediatric CC patients stratified into infancy (<1 year), early childhood (1-5 years), and later childhood (5-12 years). We found that while the

Enhanced Reticulospinal Output in Subacute Spinal Cord Injury Patients with Spasticity.

In the chronic phase of spinal cord injury (SCI), damage to the reticulospinal and corticospinal tracts has been associated with the development of spasticity. Because spasticity can emerge within just a few weeks postinjury, this suggests that reorganization of these motor pathways may begin during the subacute phase. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the StartReact response-an involuntary release of a planned movement via a startling stimulus that engages the reticulospinal tract-by measuring reaction times from electromyographic activity, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) by stimulating the

Beyond paper walls: From diagnosis to action on visa inequities in global health.

Visa inequities in global health have moved from the margins of academic discourse to the centre of a growing reform agenda. While recent literature has established that visa regimes function as structural determinants of global health participation, a critical gap remains: the solution pathways proposed to date remain dispersed across commentaries, editorials and toolkits rather than consolidated into a coordinated operational framework that institutions, conference bodies and funders can act on at scale. This Essay consolidates and builds on that emerging consensus to propose a Global Mobili

Gut-Mediated Systemic Toxicity of Micro- and Nanoplastics: Nanoscale Biointerface Properties, Microbiota-Metabolite Crosstalk, and Evidence Across Gut-Organ Axes.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) have been recognized as ubiquitous emerging global pollutants, which are extensively detectable in diverse environmental media and food matrices. Increasing evidence indicates that the intestine is a primary target of orally ingested MNPs and a critical initiating hub for systemic toxicity. Once ingested orally, MNPs can interact with the intestinal mucus layer and epithelial barrier, induce gut microbiota dysbiosis, remodel bile acid and short-chain fatty acid metabolism, and activate oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and immune imbalance. These

Exploring the functional roles of secondary metabolites in Brassica defense networks.

Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites (SMs) that play critical roles in adaptation to environmental challenges and defense against pathogens and herbivores. Brassica species accumulate a wide range of SMs, including glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products (isothiocyanates, nitriles, thiocyanates, epithionitriles, and oxazolidinethiones), phenolics, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These compounds function as defense molecules, antioxidants, signaling mediators, and regulators of plant growth and stress responses. This review summariz

Transcriptomics analysis elucidates the growth inhibitory mechanisms of volatile fungistatic compound 3-ethylbenzaldehyde to Pseudocryphonectria elaeocarpicola.

Pseudocryphonectria elaeocarpicola is a highly destructive plant pathogenic fungus that causes Elaeocarpus stem blight, leading to significant economic losses and ecological damage in urban greening systems. Previous work showed that the volatile organic compound (VOC) 3-ethylbenzaldehyde exhibits significant inhibitory effects against P. elaeocarpicola. Treatment with an exceptionally low concentration of 3-ethylbenzaldehyde (3.724 μg/mL) resulted in a 100% inhibition rate of mycelial growth. To elucidate the antifungal mechanism of this VOC, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis

Factors influencing referral decisions for patients with chronic low back pain: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, requiring coordinated referrals across different healthcare services. Despite clinical guidelines emphasising a biopsychosocial approach, referral decisions are often unstructured and poorly understood. Existing research has mainly focused on clinical management, with limited attention to the factors influencing referral decisions and their impact on referral pathways. The objective of this scoping review is to map the existing literature on factors influencing referral decisions for patients with non-specific CL

Impaired Macrophage Efferocytosis: Shared Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications in Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases.

Efferocytosis, the specialized phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells, is a fundamental mechanism for maintaining tissue homeostasis and immune tolerance. Among professional phagocytes, macrophages play a central role due to their high plasticity and tissue-resident properties. By recognizing and engulfing apoptotic cells through a repertoire of receptors and bridging molecules, macrophages prevent secondary necrosis and inflammation and actively shape the local immune microenvironment via metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming. Defective efferocytosis has been increasingly implicated in the
