Relapsing polychondritis with splenic abscess.

A patient aged 42, diagnosed with polycondritis for approximately 14 years is presented; she has undergone urgent surgery for a splenic absc … nd the sudden installation of an evolutionary acute episode during pregnancy, which was followed by deafness. Based on these facts, immunopathogenic observations on recurrent polycondritis are getting into shape.

Do musical hallucinations always arise from the inner ear?

It has been known for some time that musical hallucinations occur in deaf patients. This has been ignored, as it has been believed that neurological and psychiatric causes predominate. However, despite specific appeals, no one with musical hallucinations and a lesion in the brain but not in the ear has been produced. The postulated otological basis is a hyperactive state of the ear, a slight endolymphatic hydrops or pre-Meniere's disease. The hallucinations probably develop out of rhythmic tinnitus. A review of all the very disparate states and diseases supposedly causing musical hallucination

[Acoustic and mechanical interpretation of the "on-off" effect].

The on-off effect is a particular form of the stapedial reflex. It is presented as a double positive deflection appearing when the stimulus starts and stops. This type of reflex is very frequent in beginning otospongiosis. The mixed theory assimilates the annual ligament of the stirrup to an elastic pin which obeys the physical laws of a spring. Otospongiosis produces a shortened sement and thickening of the annular ligament, with an increase in its rigidity, responsible for deafness of the low sounds at the beginning of the disease. The acoustic and mechanical theory enables a clear explanati…

Far-advanced otosclerosis. Cochlear implantation vs stapedectomy.

In 1981, our group, as part of a Food and Drug Administration investigator team directed by William House, performed Illinois' first cochlear implantation. We have since performed cochlear implantations in ten other persons. Since May 1980, approximately 35 severely to profoundly deaf persons per year have been referred to our clinic for evaluation. A small number of these patients had far-advanced otosclerosis. In these cases, exploratory tympanotomy and stapedectomy followed by rehabilitation with a hearing aid was a more appropriate management than cochlear implantation. Case histories and

Mild form of Hunter's syndrome: clinical delineation based on 31 cases.

The clinical features are described in 31 cases of the mild form of Hunter's syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis II) ascertained in the British … ion. Middle airways obstruction proved to be a particular hazard. A high incidence of sensorineural deafness and unexplained papilloedema was noted. The importance of regular health care for these individuals is stressed.

[Multifocal deficits following "banal" concussion (author's transl)].

This case seems worthy of attention for several reasons. To begin with, the process, which at first appeared to be concentrated in the orbital region, was triggered traumatically, with secondary glaucoma, lymphostasis and severe local pain in the left eye. Subsequently, diabetes insipidus developed, involving the hypophysis, while from the very beginning there was postchiasmatic hemianopia, later complemented by deafness and epileptiform attacks. All these complaints were most severe in the mornings, suggesting a vegetative disorder. Apart from the problem of interpreting the process the progr…

Follow-up report on autism in congenital rubella.

A longitudinal study was conducted of 243 children with congenital rubella. In this sample a high rate of autism and a high rate of recovery were observed. Examination of the data suggested that the rubella virus was the primary etiologic agent. It is hypothesized that the course of autism was that of a chronic infection in which recovery, chronicity, improvement, worsening, and delayed appearance of the autistic syndrome all were found. Other rubella consequences such as blindness, deafness, and cardiac and neuromuscular defects remained present except as modified by operations and prostheses…

The neural processing mode and development of emotional prosody in children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: Prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) receive a degraded representation of pitch and spectral cues that are critical for decoding emotional prosody. The early cortical processing modes and developmental trajectories of vocal emotion in CI children remain unclear. METHODS: Nineteen prelingually bilaterally deaf children with unilateral cochlear implants were followed longitudinally at three post-activation windows. At each visit, children were passively presented with pseudo-sentences spoken with angry, happy, fearful, or neutral prosody while cortical activity wa

MiRNA-634 promotes apoptosis in HEI-OC1 cells by regulating AK4 and AKT/mTOR signaling pathways.

Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss (ARHL), is a complex condition characterized by the progressive accumulation of hearing loss associated with aging. Age-related deafness is caused by inner ear hair cell damage and loss. Previously, we extracted exosomal miRNA from peripheral blood samples of elderly deaf individuals to corroborate the differentially high expression of miR-634. This work examines how miR-634 regulates HEI-OC1 cell death via the downstream target gene AK4 and the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. KEGG and GO enrichment studies identified miR-634's downstream target gene AK4, f…

Validation of the Manchester spoken language development scale (MSLDS).

Introduction: Standardized outcome measures are importantfor accurately monitoring the language development of pre-lingually deaf children receiving auditory implants. Current commonly used outcome measures are time-consuming,limiting the practicality of regular testing. To address these limitations, the Manchester Spoken Language Development Scale (MSLDS) was developed as a quick and easily applicable interim measurement. This is an 11-point scale designed to provide a streamlined overview of a child's expressive language development. This study describes the MSLDS, evaluates its ease of use

BDNF-mediated preservation of spiral ganglion cell peripheral processes and axons in comparison to that of their cell bodies.

Treatment with neurotrophins prevents degeneration of spiral ganglion cells (SGCs) after severe hair cell loss. In a previous study we demonstrated a long-lasting effect with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) after cessation of treatment. In that study the survival of the SGC cell bodies was examined. Here we address the question whether their peripheral processes and central processes (axons) were protected by this treatment as well in the cochleas of the aforementioned study. Guinea pigs were deafened by co-administration of kanamycin and furosemide. Two weeks after deafening the righ

Occurrence of primary brain tumors in cochlear implant patients in Sweden between 1989 and 2014.

PURPOSE: Cochlear implants are widely used for hearing rehabilitation of deaf children with congenital deafness or adults with acquired severe-to-profound hearing loss. The sound processor antenna creates a radio frequency-electromagnetic field transmitting the sound signal to the implant, similar to that in a mobile phone. A recent case report suggested a relationship between cochlear implants and malignant glioma, and some epidemiological studies have suggested an increased glioma and acoustic neuroma risk associated with long hours of mobile phone use. An epidemiological study is warranted …

"My Plate is Full": Reasons for Declining a Genetic Evaluation of Hearing Loss.

The aim of this study was to obtain patient and parent perspectives on genetic evaluation of hearing loss, in order to identify motivators, expectations, and barriers. Three focus groups were conducted following a semi-structured discussion guide, led by an independent moderator. Participants were hearing parents of children with permanent hearing loss or deaf adults. Qualitative content analysis was used to develop a codebook and identify major themes and subthemes. Participant views were compared to national guidelines. The 28 participants comprised 23 parents representing 21 unique families
