Cognitive emotion regulation strategies as differential predictors of anxiety and depression, quality of life, and functioning in primary care patients with emotional disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional disorders (ED) such as depression and anxiety are the most prevalent worldwide and are often addressed in primary care (PC). Stressful events can cause people to activate adaptive or maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS). The type of CERS used by an individual with an ED may influence clinical outcomes, quality of life (QoL), and functioning, although the precise effects are not well-understood. The aim of this study was to determine whether CERS are significant predictors of clinical symptoms, QoL, and functioning in PC patients with EDs. METHOD:

Exosomes from bipolar disorder patients induce mania- and depression-like behaviors in mice via shared and distinct neuroimmune signatures.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a recurrent illness characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression, yet the biological mechanisms underlying these oscillating states remain poorly understood. Exosomes, nanosized extracellular vesicles that mediate peripheral-central communication through transfer of molecular cargo, have emerged as important regulators of brain function and disease. To test whether patient-derived exosome preparations encode phase-specific signals, we isolated serum exosomes from BD patients experiencing manic or depressive episodes and infused them stereotaxically int

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for sleep disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of sleep, anxiety, depression, and safety outcomes.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique for treating sleep disorders (SD); however, its efficacy and safety have not been thoroughly evaluated. This study aims to provide more comprehensive and reliable evidence regarding the clinical application of taVNS for SD. 7 databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, CNKI, Wanfang) were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating taVNS in the treatment of patients with SD. The search time range was from the establishment of

The effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on non-suicidal self-injury in hospitalized adolescents with depressive disorders: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with depressive disorder is characterized by recurrent impulsivity and is a predictor of future suicidal behavior, necessitating effective and feasible interventions. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for adolescents (MBCT-A), a first-line treatment for depression, was evaluated in this trial for its efficacy in reducing NSSI in this population. METHODS: In this randomized, single-blind, controlled trial, 94 hospitalized adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorder and engaging in NSSI were allocated to either MBCT-A plus treatment…

Adverse childhood experiences, family functioning, and duration of untreated illness among adolescents with anxiety and depressive disorders: A nationwide study in China.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment delay in adolescents with anxiety and depressive disorders may adversely affect outcomes. Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are established risk factors, the family-level mechanisms linking ACEs to duration of untreated illness (DUI) remain unclear. This study examined whether family functioning statistically accounted for associations between specific ACEs and delayed help-seeking. METHODS: This nationwide cross-sectional study recruited 1,051 adolescents with first-episode anxiety and depressive disorders from eight Chinese clinical centers. Participants com…

Prevalence and associated factors of ICD/DSM-diagnosed depressive disorders among people living with HIV: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are highly prevalent among people living with HIV (PLWH), severely impairing quality of life and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. While ART advances call for reassessing depressive disorders among PLWH prevalence, most studies rely on self-report tools rather than standardized clinical diagnoses. Linked to HIV stigma, low CD4+ T-cell counts, and ART-related side effects, depressive disorders among PLWH requires targeted prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: An extensive search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases …

Different effect of adverse childhood experiences on white matter microstructure in major depression and bipolar disorder: moderating role of genetic liability.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are risk factors for both major depressive (MDD) and bipolar disorder. ACEs have been associated with white matter (WM) alterations, but whether they have different effects in MDD and BD remains unclear. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) allow for an individual estimation of genetic liabilities for most psychiatric conditions. The aim of the present study was to characterize the effect of ACEs on WM microstructure in MDD and BD, testing a possible differential effect between the two diagnoses and investigating whether genetic liabilities might modulate this relat

Depressive symptom domains exert different effects on proinflammatory cytokines and inhibitory control function among patients with major affective disorders.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated the shared and distinct etiologies of different depressive symptom domains. However, less is known about the effects of the three depressive symptom domains, namely the dysphoria, retardation, and vegetative domains, on inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokine profiles. METHODS: Our study enrolled 327 adolescent and adult patients with major affective disorders, namely bipolar disorder (n = 94) and major depressive disorder (n = 233). The three-depressive-symptom-domain model of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale was used in the…

Associations between death anxiety and probable posttraumatic stress disorder and clinical depression and anxiety in older Israeli adults during wartime.

The outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, has presented unprecedented challenges to older adults' mental health, including increased posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. The current study examined potential war- and age-related factors associated with probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), clinical depression (probable depression), and generalized anxiety disorder (probable anxiety) among older adults during the ongoing war. Moreover, due to the continued threat of death, we examined whether death anxiety is an additional contributing factor to older adults' pr

Untargeted metabolomics revealed that quercetin improved adrenal gland metabolism disorders and modulated the HPA axis in perimenopausal depression model rats.

Perimenopausal depression is a psychiatric disorder that occurs around the time of menopause and seriously affects women's health. The pathogenesis of perimenopausal depression is unclear which affects its prevention and treatment. Quercetin is a flavonoid compound with antidepressant and estrogen-like effects. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of quercetin on adrenal gland metabolic disorders in perimenopausal depressed rats based on untargeted metabolomics. Female Wistar rats with no difference in sucrose preference were randomly separated into four groups (n = 12): sham-o

Early treatment with vildagliptin and linagliptin reduces social fear and prevents the onset of comorbid depression in a mouse model of social anxiety disorder.

We have previously shown that sitagliptin, a widely used dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitor for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, effectively reduces social fear in an animal model that closely mimics the main behavioral symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD). This social fear conditioning (SFC) model induces social fear without comorbidities in the short term, but over time, a depressive-like phenotype emerges, mimicking the comorbidity often observed in SAD patients. In this study, we investigated the effects of two DPP4 inhibitors, vildagliptin and linagliptin, both of whic

The Association between Cesarean Section Delivery and Child Behavior: Is It Mediated by Maternal Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Maternal Postpartum Depression?

Cesarean sections (C-sections) account for up to 21% of births worldwide. Studies have linked delivery via C-section with an increased risk of child behavior problems, such as internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Maternal postpartum depression (PPD) is also linked to child behavioral problems and may play a mediating role in the association between the mode of delivery and child behavior. Mixed findings between mode of delivery and PPD may be due to a failure to distinguish between C-section types, as unplanned/emergency C-sections are linked to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), whi
