Ethanol augments the baroreflex-inhibitory effects of sciatic nerve stimulation in the anaesthetized dog.

Electrical stimulation of somatic afferent fibres in the sciatic nerve has been used as a model of injury in the anaesthetized dog. Stimulation of the sciatic nerve (during reflexly induced periods of apnoea to obviate any respiratory effects of sciatic stimulation) led to a simultaneous increase in arterial blood pressure and heart rate and a decrease in baroreflex sensitivity. Infusion of ethanol sufficient to produce clinically relevant plasma ethanol levels (100-200 mg %) had no consistent effects on baroreflex sensitivity, but enhanced the pressor response and significantly augmented the

Bladder pacemaker: scientific basis and clinical future.

Complete intermittent emptying of the denervated bladder is essential to maintain the integrity of the urinary tract. Intraspinal extradural segments of the sacral roots in the canine can be stimulated electrically to induce bladder emptying effectively, especially in conjunction with selective neurotomy to make the stimulus pure autonomic effect on the bladder wall itself. With varying parameters of stimulation, one also can induce sustained voluntary sphincter activity to maintain continence--which obviates the problem of skeletal muscle fatigue. Combination of the two--detrusor stimulation

Effect of brain stimulation on aldosterone secretion in the rhesus monkey (Macaca Mulatta).

The lateral hypothalamus, and various sites within the limbic system and frontal lobe of the rhesus monkey brain were electrically stimulated using chronically implanted electrodes. A considerble increase in plasma aldosterone levels was observed after stimulation of the lateral hypothalamic area, certain localized sites in the cingulate area, and lower medial parts of the frontal lobe. Inactive sites included most of the amygdala, hippocampus, and basal ganglia, together with other areas within the frontal lobe and cingulate gyrus. Stimulation of all active areas was followed by an increase i

A biodegradable and flexible neural interface for transdermal optoelectronic modulation and regeneration of peripheral nerves.

Optoelectronic neural interfaces can leverage the photovoltaic effect to convert light into electrical current, inducing charge redistribution and enabling nerve stimulation. This method offers a non-genetic and remote approach for neuromodulation. Developing biodegradable and efficient optoelectronic neural interfaces is important for achieving transdermal stimulation while minimizing infection risks associated with device retrieval, thereby maximizing therapeutic outcomes. We propose a biodegradable, flexible, and miniaturized silicon-based neural interface capable of transdermal optoelectro

Modulation of cortically induced rhythmical jaw movements by stimulation of the red nucleus in the rat.

We study whether stimulation of the red nucleus (RN) can modulate rhythmical jaw movements in rats anesthetized by urethane. Rhythmical jaw movements were induced by repetitive electrical stimulation of the two cortical masticatory areas (area A: the orofacial motor cortex; area P: the insular cortex). Stimuli applied to the RN did influence rhythmical jaw movements induced by stimulation of the A-area. Stimuli applied in the jaw-closing phase increased the amplitude of the jaw-closing movement. Stimuli applied in the jaw-opening phase disturbed the rhythm of jaw movements and induced a small

Accelerated norepinephrine turnover in peripheral tissues after ventromedial hypothalamic stimulation in rats.

To obtain evidence for a functional connection between the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) and the sympathetic nervous system, effects of electrical stimulation of the VMH, the lateral hypothalamic area (LH) and the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) on norepinephrine (NE) turnover in the heart, liver, pancreas, spleen, submandibular gland and the interscapular brown adipose tissue were examined in anesthetized rats. Stimulation of the VMH elicited a 3-8-fold increase in the rate of NE turnover in all organs examined, whereas stimulation of the LH or the PVN had no appreciable

A mechanically adaptive hydrogel neural interface based on silk fibroin for high-efficiency neural activity recording.

A flexible non-transient electrical platform that can realize bidirectional neural communication from living tissues is of great interest in neuroscience to better understand basic neuroscience and the nondrug therapy of diseases or disorders. The development of soft, biocompatible, and conductive neural interface with mechanical coupling and efficient electrical exchange is a new trend but remains a challenge. Herein, we designed a multifunctional neural electrical communication platform in the form of a mechanically compliant, electrically conductive, and biocompatible hydrogel electrode. Si

Neuromodulatory effects of voluntary-motor-effort-driven wrist-hand robot in sensorimotor dynamics after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary motor effort (VME)-driven neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)-robots have demonstrated superior rehabilitative efficacy in post-stroke wrist-hand motor restoration compared with purely mechanical systems. However, their neuromodulatory mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate cortical responses elicited by an electromyography (EMG)-driven NMES-robot assisting wrist-hand movements in individuals with chronic stroke, and to evaluate robot-nervous system interactions, using EMG to capture VME. METHODS: Cortical responses during wrist-hand extension

Chronic Auditory-Nerve Implant Enhances Brainstem Phase Locking to Electric Pulse Trains.

PURPOSE: Present-day cochlear implants (CIs) can deliver usable speech reception in quiet surroundings. Most CI users, however, show impaired sensitivity to temporal fine structure, which hampers their use of pitch contours and spatial cues to segregate competing talkers. In previous short-term animal studies, we used intraneural (IN) electrodes to stimulate pathways originating from various cochlear turns. Neurons in the inferior colliculus synchronized to apical stimulation at higher rates than to stimulation of the middle-to-basal pathways that are stimulated primarily by today's CIs. Here,

Gait-Synchronized Rhythmic Brain Stimulation Improves Poststroke Gait Disturbance: A Pilot Study.

Background and Purpose- Gait disturbance is one of serious impairments lowering activity of daily life in poststroke patients. The patients often show reduced hip and knee joint flexion and ankle dorsiflexion of the lower limbs during the swing phase of gait, which is partly controlled by the primary motor cortex (M1). In the present study, we investigated whether gait-synchronized rhythmic brain stimulation targeting swing phase-related M1 activity can improve gait function in poststroke patients. Methods- Eleven poststroke patients in the chronic phase participated in this single-blind cross

Combination of foot stimulation and tramadol treatment reverses irritation induced bladder overactivity in cats.

PURPOSE: We determined whether transcutaneous electrical foot stimulation combined with a low dose of tramadol (Sigma-Aldrich®) could completely suppress bladder overactivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Repeat cystometrograms were performed in 18 α-chloralose anesthetized cats by infusing the bladder with saline or 0.25% acetic acid. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (5 Hz) of the cat hind foot at 2 to 4 times the threshold intensity needed to induce observable toe movement was applied to suppress acetic acid induced bladder overactivity. Tramadol (1 to 3 mg/kg intravenously) was administered

Bulbocavernosus reflex to stimulation of prostatic urethra in patients with lifelong premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: Lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) is a prevalent sexual dysfunction among men, while its precise pathologic mechanisms have remained poorly understood. AIM: In our study, the correlation between excitability of bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) to stimulation of the prostatic urethra and LPE was studied. METHODS: Twenty normal potent male volunteers and 42 patients with LPE were studied by inserting a specially designed Foley catheter with two electrodes mounted on its distal surface (intraurethral catheter electrode) into bladder to evoke the BCR to stimulation of prostatic uret

Electrical and chemical long-term depression do not attenuate low-Mg2+-induced epileptiform activity in the entorhinal cortex.

PURPOSE: Low-frequency electrical and magnetic stimulation of cortical brain regions has been shown to reduce cortical excitability and to decrease the susceptibility to seizures in humans and in vivo models of epilepsy. The induction of long-term depression (LTD) or depotentiation of a seizure-related long-term potentiation has been proposed to be part of the underlying mechanism. With the low-Mg(2+)-model of epilepsy, this study investigated the effect of electrical LTD, chemical LTD, and depotentiation on the susceptibility of the entorhinal cortex to epileptiform activity. METHODS: The ex

Pelvic floor activation upon stimulation of the sacral spinal nerves in sacral neuromodulation patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the activation of the different parts of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) upon electrical stimulation of the sacral spinal nerves while comparing the different lead electrode configurations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PFM electromyography (EMG) was recorded using an intravaginal multiple array probe with 12 electrodes pairs, which allows to make a distinction between the different sides and depths of the pelvic floor. In addition concentric needle EMG of the external anal sphincter was performed to exclude far-field recording. A medtronic InterStim tined lead (model 3889) was used

Anatomical and functional evidence for progressive age-related decline in parasympathetic control of choroidal blood flow in pigeons.

The choroid receives extensive parasympathetic innervation, which in birds arises largely from the ciliary ganglion (CG). Since age-related changes in parasympathetic regulation of choroidal blood flow (ChBF) could contribute to age-related retinal decline, we used anatomical and functional methods to determine if ChBF control by the CG shows age-related decline in pigeons. The efficacy of the choroidal vasodilatory response to activation of the CG preganglionic input from the medial subdivision of the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal (EWM) was assessed using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). The EWM

Development of electrical rhythmicity in the murine gastrointestinal tract is specifically encoded in the tunica muscularis.

1. Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) have been identified as pacemaker cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of vertebrates. We have studied the development of ICCs in pacemaker regions and the onset of electrical rhythmicity in the gastric antrum, small bowel and proximal colon of the mouse. 2. ICCs, as detected by c-Kit immunofluorescence, were found during embryogenesis in regions of the GI tract that eventually become pacemaker areas. Prior to birth, these cells were organized into well-structured networks, and by the end of the embryonic period the morphology of ICC networks in pacem

Fabrication and initial testing of the μDBS: a novel Deep Brain Stimulation electrode with thousands of individually controllable contacts.

High frequency electrical stimulation of deep brain structures such as the subthalamic nucleus in Parkinson's disease or thalamus for essential tremor is used clinically to reduce symptom severity. Deep brain stimulation activates neurons in specific brain structures and connection pathways, overriding aberrant neural activity associated with symptoms. While optimal deep brain stimulation might activate a particular neural structure precisely, existing deep brain stimulation can only generate roughly-spherical regions of activation that do not overlap with any target anatomy. Additionally, sid

N-Arachidonoyl glycine suppresses Na⁺/Ca²⁺ exchanger-mediated Ca²⁺ entry into endothelial cells and activates BK(Ca) channels independently of GPCRs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: N-Arachidonoyl glycine (NAGly) is a lipoamino acid with vasorelaxant properties. We aimed to explore the mechanisms of NAGly's action on unstimulated and agonist-stimulated endothelial cells. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The effects of NAGly on endothelial electrical signalling were studied in combination with vascular reactivity. KEY RESULTS: In EA.hy926 cells, the sustained hyperpolarization to histamine was inhibited by the non-selective Na⁺/Ca²⁺ exchanger (NCX) inhibitor bepridil and by an inhibitor of reversed mode NCX, KB-R7943. In cells dialysed with Cs⁺-based Na⁺-co

Cauda equina repair in the rat: part 1. Stimulus-evoked EMG for identifying spinal nerves innervating intrinsic tail muscles.

Cauda equina injuries may produce severe leg and pelvic floor dysfunction, for which no effective treatments exist. We are developing a rat cauda equina injury model to allow nerve root identification and surgical repair. One possible difficulty in implementing any repair strategy after trauma in humans involves the correct identification of proximal and distal ends of nerve roots separated by the injury. Two series of studies were carried out. In Series 1, we electrically stimulated segmental contributors to the dorsal and ventral caudales nerves in order to characterize the recruitment patte
