The Community Work Project is a work adjustment programme, part of a range of prevocational services offered in the occupational therapy department of the Royal Ottawa Hospital, in Ottawa, Ontario. The special feature of this work adjustment programme is the use of an integrated work environment. Compared to institutionally-based programmes, this work adjustment programme consists of clients undergoing treatment alongside regular competitive employees in a real work setting. Five hundred routine preemployment urine toxicology examinations were performed on prospective hospital employees in 1981. Thirty-three (6.6%) examinations were positive for one or more of either Valium, barbiturates, amphetamines, phencyclidine or opiates. Only 13 (2.6%) were confirmed to be positive. Serum samples were examined from 70 people working or resident on 41 pig farms within a 50 km radius of Palmerston North. Students with disabilities are now placed in regular industrial arts and vocational training programs in secondary schools. Vocational educators agree that teachers need assistance in serving these students with special needs. This paper explores the contributions school occupational therapists can make to vocational education for handicapped students. Recommendations are included for therapists interested in moving into new roles in this field.

We sought to explore the possibility that exposure to noise at work might interact with job complexity and gender to affect the incidence of occupational injury among industrial employees. In monkeypox virus (MPXV) transmission caused by contaminated material, we have to consider that recently the outbreak of several MPXV cases was linked to tattoo parlors in Cadiz, Spain. These tattoo parlors did not cause a single outbreak, but instead are an established transmission route for MPXV, underscoring the need for increased awareness. We recommend increasing awareness among tattooists and piercers not only to protect their own safety and health, but also to prevent spreading the virus to their customers.
