MED-EL hearing solution registry: An examination of the strengths and limitations of a cochlear implant registry.

There is a significant gap in routine clinical data concerning cochlear implant (CI) users, particularly regarding real-world outcomes. To address this, the present study focuses on the MED-EL Hearing Solution (MEHS) multicenter registry, which covers 5 clinics in Germany. Participants were users of a SONNET 2 or SONNET 2 EAS audio processor. Anonymized data that were routinely collected were extracted and analyzed by a third-party organization. Speech test outcomes (monosyllables and numbers), hours of daily use, self-perceived level of auditory benefit, and safety were assessed. Outcomes fro

Interprofessional Approach to Reducing Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections in a Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Central line [catheter]-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is associated with longer stays and increased cost, morbidity, and mortality. LOCAL PROBLEM: An academic cardiothoracic intensive care unit had a high CLABSI incidence (standardized infection ratio of 2.3 at baseline). The hospital's executive leadership team (chief nursing officer, chief medical officer, and chief of quality and performance improvement) directed intensive care unit leaders to reduce the standardized infection ratio. METHODS: Interprofessional CLABSI reduction efforts were formulated using A3 metho

Pursuing Reduction in Fatigue After COVID-19 via Exercise and Rehabilitation (PREFACER): a protocol for a randomised feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Over 777 million COVID-19 infections have occurred globally, with data suggesting that 10%-20% of those infected develop Long COVID. Fatigue is one of the most common and disabling symptoms of Long COVID. We aim to assess the feasibility and safety of a new, remotely delivered, multimodal rehabilitation intervention, paced to prevent post-exertional malaise (PEM), to support the conduct of a future, definitive randomised trial. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a randomised, two-arm feasibility trial (COVIDEx intervention vs usual care). Sixty participants with Long COVID wi

Investing in Infrastructure: A Mixed-Methods Cost Analysis of Implementation Strategies to Address Emerging Youth Drug Trends.

OBJECTIVE: Schools engaged in prevention efforts struggle to respond quickly and effectively to changing drug use trends due to insufficient investment in infrastructure at local, state, and national levels. This results in preventable morbidity and mortality among adolescents. This study estimated the costs associated with implementing Rapid Adaptation to Prevent Drug use (RAPD) infrastructure-building implementation strategies, using mixed methods to optimize data collection feasibility and quality and to support a comprehensive understanding of outcomes. METHOD: We conducted semi-structure

Education of medical caregivers in Poland: areas requiring improvement - mixed-method research.

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes associated with an ageing population, combined with the shortage of nursing personnel in Poland, have led to the introduction of a distinct new medical profession-the medical caregiver-which is separate from the nursing profession and has been officially included in the national classification of professions and specialties. In light of the demands of this role, a study was conducted with the primary objective of analysing educational outcomes and identifying areas requiring improvement in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills within the educational pr

A Clean You Can Trust: Using an Evidence-Based Bundle to Transform Point-of-Use Treatment for Reusable Medical Devices at a Military Treatment Facility.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout surgical and invasive procedures, reusable instruments and flexible endoscopes become soiled with organic and inorganic materials. When these substances are permitted to dry, a matrix of microbial cells, called biofilm, forms on the surface of devices, irreversibly binding and subsequently impeding the disinfection and sterilization process. To prevent biofilm formation from occurring, devices must be continuously flushed and wiped with water throughout the procedure and at the end of the case. This process, known as point-of-use treatment (POUT), is the critical first

Treatment Model for Young Patients with Psychogenic Erectile Dysfunction and Resultant Infertility.

Conventional management of erectile dysfunction (ED)-related non-consummation and infertility often overlooks psychosocial determinants and dyadic involvement, leading to suboptimal therapeutic outcomes, including persistent sexual dysfunction and reduced couple satisfaction. This study proposes and validates a novel, patient-centric intervention tailored for young individuals with psychogenic ED (pED), targeting both erectile recovery and infertility resolution. The "Streamlined Clinical Process" incorporates structured treatment strategies for both the patient and their partner, including ev

[The role of telemedicine in urological care for the elderly - benefits, challenges, and future perspectives].

The aging population has led to an increasing number of patients with urological conditions, such as urinary tract infections, prostate and bladder cancer, and nephrolithiasis. These diseases often require regular medical visits, posing challenges for elderly patients with usually limited mobility, as well as for the burdened healthcare system. Telemedicine, through remote consultations and telemonitoring tools, can improve the care of urological patients, which require further analysis. A literature review in Polish and English was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databa

Counselling regarding a planned provision of medical aids is currently neither reimbursed nor regulated in Germany. It is offered by a range of providers with employees with varying levels of qualification and may be provided in a personal conversation, by phone, or remotely. In many cases, counselling is omitted entirely between the prescription and trial use or delivery of the product. The quality of medical aids counselling, which plays a key role in temporary, supportive or palliative care for urinary incontinence, is therefore considered problematic. In 2019, the working group "Geriatric U

Exercise Counseling in Congenital Heart Disease: A Guide for the Pediatric and Congenital Cardiologist.

Exercise is a critical determinant of both immediate and long-term health for individuals with congenital heart disease (CHD). While pediatric cardiologists increasingly recognize the importance of promoting physical activity, formal training in exercise counseling remains limited. Exercise cardiology is an evolving subspecialty, with growing educational and training opportunities for congenital cardiologists to develop diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and expand access to exercise resources for patients with CHD. As part of this effort, the Global Coalition for Fitness and CHD (GloCo) co

The Impact of Expressive Arts Therapy on Alexithymia Levels in Adolescent Inpatients with Severe Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex psychiatric disorder that requires a multidisciplinary approach. The World Health Organization recognizes the therapeutic value of expressive arts, including drama, in enhancing emotional, cognitive, and relational domains in severe mental illnesses such as AN. Expressive arts interventions may improve emotional intelligence, empathy, and self-awareness while reducing anxiety and alexithymia. This study evaluated the impact of an adjunctive expressive arts program on alexithymia in pediatric inpatients with AN. METHODS: We enrolled patients aged

The eye-mind connection: a systematic review of retinal biomarkers and ocular signatures in major psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and dementia are increasingly associated with specific ocular and retinal abnormalities. These associations may reflect shared neurovascular, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative mechanisms, yet findings remain scattered and understudied. This systematic review synthesizes existing evidence on ocular and retinal pathologies across major psychiatric conditions, highlighting common retinal biomarkers that may inform future screening strategies. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic sear

Spatio-temporal risk prediction of leptospirosis: A machine-learning-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease prevalent worldwide, particularly in tropical regions experiencing frequent rainfall and severe cyclones, which are further aggravated by climate change. This bacterial zoonosis, caused by the Leptospira genus, can be transmitted through contaminated water and soil. The Pacific islands bear a high burden of leptospirosis, making it crucial to identify key factors influencing its distribution. Understanding these factors is vital for developing targeted policy decisions to mitigate the spread of Leptospira. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING

Evidence-based dust exposure prediction and/or control tools in occupational settings: A scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Workplace atmospheric exposure monitoring is the standard method to assess and control hazardous dust exposure; however, feasibility and cost constraints often limit its application. In recent decades, evidence-based tools supporting exposure modelling and control banding have been developed to aid in predicting and/or controlling occupational exposure to various contaminants. However, there is limited information on the availability and applicability of evidence-based tools for predicting and/or controlling occupational dust exposure, as well as on the methods for evaluating these
