Life history parameters of the cattle long-nosed sucking louse, Linognathus vituli.

Cattle sucking lice, Linognathus vituli (L.) (Phthiraptera: Linognathidae), were obtained from naturally infected cattle and maintained within 'arenas' affixed to the backs of cattle confined in controlled environment chambers maintained at a constant temperature of 15 °C. Temperatures measured within the arenas at an ambient temperature of 15 °C were constant at about 34 °C and only slightly above the temperature on nearby skin. The effect of temperature on egg development was determined using a gradient of temperatures between 25 °C and 41 °C. Eggs did not develop at temperatures of < 26 °C

Pre-operative history of depression and cognitive changes in bariatric surgery patients.

Obesity-associated cognitive impairments may be partially reversible through bariatric surgery. Depression, a prevalent comorbidity in baria … cal interview for the DSM-IV Axis I disorders assessed major depressive disorder (MDD). Pre-surgery history of MDD was found in 47.8% of patients, but was not associated with greater baseline cognitive impairments. Repeated measures revealed improved cognitive abilities 12 months after surgery. Pre-surgery history of MDD did not influence post-operative c …

Review article: portal vein obstruction--epidemiology, pathogenesis, natural history, prognosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Portal vein obstruction may be due to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) or its sequale, the portal cavernoma. PVT is a common complication in liver cirrhosis, however, it may also occur as a primary vascular disorder, in absence of any liver disease. AIM: To review the current knowledge on nomenclature, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup and management of adult patients with obstruction in the portal vein, either as a primary vascular disease in adults, or as a complication of liver cirrhosis. METHODS: A structured search in PubMed was performed using

Parental alcohol history differentially predicts offspring disorders in distinct subgroups in Israel.

OBJECTIVE: The association between alcoholism in parents and related disorders in their offspring is well established in cultures with intermediate/high alcohol consumption, but not in those with low consumption, such as Israel. This study investigated differences in parental transmission of alcohol problems and related psychopathology between immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU) to Israel and other Israelis-two Israeli subgroups with differing alcohol consumption behaviors and social norms. METHOD: A total of 1,347 adults from a household sample were interviewed. Regression analyses

Sexual history disclosure polygraph outcomes: do juvenile and adult sex offenders differ?

Despite the empirical and theoretical chasm between the opponents and proponents of polygraphy, its use is prominent among sex offender agencies in the United States. However, current research on polygraph examination outcomes among juvenile sex offenders, along with potential differences from their adult counterparts, is scarce and outdated. In the present study, we assess the difference between juvenile and adult sex offenders in terms of the propensity for passing a sexual history disclosure polygraph examination. A sample of 324 sex offenders (86 juveniles and 238 adults) who engaged in a …

Family history of a mood disorder indicates a more severe bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: In the clinical setting, patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are often asked about potential family history (FH) of mood disorders. The aim of the present study was to examine differences between BD patients with FH of a mood disorder, and those without, on clinical, personality and social functioning characteristics, as well as on the symptomatic course of the disorder. METHODS: Data was collected from the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD). For this report, we included 2600 patients, 1963 of those reported having a first-degree family member …

Low- and high-grade esthesioneuroblastomas display a distinct natural history and outcome.

PURPOSE: Esthesioneuroblastomas, also called olfactory neuroblastomas (ENB) represent a rare sinonasal neurectodermal tumour which prognostic factors are unsteadily described. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical and pathological characteristics were analysed in patients treated at Gustave Roussy Institute between 1979 and 2009. RESULTS: Out of 63 patients, 19 patients were reclassified and 44 patients were eligible for the analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed that T staging of the modified Dulguerov TNM staging and Hyams grade>III (that we termed high-grade ENB) were the only independent prog

Family history of colorectal cancer in BRAF p.V600E-mutated colorectal cancer cases.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports suggest that relatives of colorectal cancer (CRC)-affected probands carrying the BRAF p.V600E mutation are at an increased risk of CRC and extracolonic cancers (ECC). In this study, we estimated the association between a family history of either CRC or ECC and risk of CRC with a BRAF p.V600E mutation. METHODS: Population-based CRC cases (probands, ages 18-59 years at diagnosis), recruited irrespective of family cancer history, were characterized for BRAF p.V600E mutation and mismatch repair (MMR) status. ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using m…

Risk estimates for complex disorders: comparing personal genome testing and family history.

PURPOSE: Personal genome testing allows the identification of single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with an increased risk for common complex disorders. An area of concern in the use of personal genome testing is how risk estimates generated differ from traditional measures of risk (e.g., family history analysis). We sought to analyze the concordance of risk estimates generated by family history analysis and by personal genome testing. METHODS: Risk categorizations for 20 complex conditions included in Navigenics personal genome testing were compared with risk categorization estimates de…

Natural history of thoracic aortic aneurysms: size matters, plus moving beyond size.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) are a prevalent and deadly disease that, without diagnosis and treatment, eventuates in life-threatening aortic dissection or rupture. While TAAs normally grow in an indolent manner, once a certain size (a "hinge point") is reached, the risk of dissection, rupture, and death increases dramatically. By virtue of their common clinical "silence," many TAAs are not diagnosed until such complications occur. While size is a helpful criterion for intervention, there is a need for parameters and markers besides aortic aneurysm size for use in diagnosing and monitoring

Correlation between triazole treatment history and susceptibility in clinically isolated Aspergillus fumigatus.

This is the first report of a detailed relationship between triazole treatment history and triazole MICs for 154 Aspergillus fumigatus clinical isolates. The duration of itraconazole dosage increased as the itraconazole MIC increased, and a positive correlation was observed (r = 0.5700, P < 0.0001). The number of itraconazole-naïve isolates dramatically decreased as the itraconazole MIC increased, particularly for MICs exceeding 2 μg/ml (0.5 μg/ml versus 2 μg/ml, P = 0.03). We also examined the relationship between cumulative itraconazole usage and the MICs of other azoles. A positive correlat…

Can social history variables predict prison inmates' risk for latent tuberculosis infection?

Improved screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in correctional facilities may improve TB control. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) consists of 32 prisons. Inmates are screened upon entry to ODRC and yearly thereafter. The objective of the study was to determine if social history factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and drug use are significant predictors of LTBI and treatment outcomes. We reviewed the medical charts of inmates and randomly selected age-matched controls at one ODRC facility for 2009. We used a conditional logistic regression to …

Adult polyglucosan body disease: Natural History and Key Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings.

OBJECTIVE: Adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD) is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy characterized by neurogenic bladder, progressive spastic gait, and peripheral neuropathy. Polyglucosan bodies accumulate in the central and peripheral nervous systems and are often associated with glycogen branching enzyme (GBE) deficiency. To improve clinical diagnosis and enable future evaluation of therapeutic strategies, we conducted a multinational study of the natural history and imaging features of APBD. METHODS: We gathered clinical, biochemical, and molecular findings in 50 APBD patients with G…

Reduced diffusion in neurocysticercosis: circumstances of appearance and possible natural history implications.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Few studies discuss DWI findings in patients with NCC, and their conclusions are variable and contradictory. The aim of our study was to describe DWI findings of a cohort of patients with NCC, emphasizing the frequency of reduced diffusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 48 patients with NCC. Two neuroradiologists analyzed MR images regarding location, number, and stage of NCC lesions. On the basis of visual analysis, they defined, by consensus, the presence of high signal within NCC lesions on DWI and measured their ADC values when feasible.
