Sex Differences in Natural History and Health Outcomes Among Individuals With Tic Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze sex differences in outcomes in Tourette syndrome (TS) and Persistent Motor or Vocal tic disorders (PMVT) in the Tourette Association of America International Consortium for Genetics (TAAICG) dataset. METHODS: The relationship between sex and clinical measures was explored in 2,403 participants (N = 2,109 with TS; N = 294 with PMVT) from the TAAICG dataset using generalized estimating equation regression models, and adjusted for age and family relationships. RESULTS: Female (vs male) participants with TS (25.5% of the sample) had 0.46 times lower odds of being formally

Access to Oral Healthcare in Individuals With Rett Syndrome: A Qualitative Study of Parent Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are varied in their nature and presentation. Barriers to oral healthcare are reported in studies of general populations with IDD but these may not reflect the barriers experienced by individuals with rare disorders such as Rett syndrome (RTT). There are also few peer-reviewed studies in the Australian context exploring barriers to dental care access for patients living with a disability. This qualitative study explored caregivers' perceptions and experiences regarding oral health and access to dental care for those with RTT in Austr

Atypical contributions of reward decisions to momentary mood in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) are often accompanied by severe mood dysregulation, leading to more frequent irrational decisions such as drug-seeking behavior. Existing research indicates that the impairment of the reward system is central to the development of addiction. However, it remains unclear how the abnormal reward processing affects the mood regulation abilities of individuals with MUD. In this study, we explored the cognitive and computational mechanisms through which the subjective mood of individuals with MUD is influenced by reward information duri

The Diverse Experiences and Challenges of Individuals With Alopecia Areata: Survey Results From Finland.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic disease that significantly impacts well-being and quality of life. Despite its burden, professional support and treatment utilization remain low. This study investigated the experiences of 226 individuals in Finland with AA through an online survey. Most (82.7%) had at least one comorbid condition, most commonly atopic dermatitis (45.1%) and allergic rhinitis (43.4%). Depression and anxiety were reported by 22.1% and 23.0% of respondents, respectively. Those with ≥50% hair loss were significantly less likely to report higher overall well-being (odds ratio 0.60

The impact of depression and social anxiety on eye orientation and disengagement in individuals with and without depression.

In individuals with depression, the comorbidity with social anxiety disorder is prevalent that often exacerbates symptoms and social dysfunction, such as exhibiting more severe social avoidance and interpersonal impairment. Our study used the eye-tracking technique to explore how depression and social anxiety, individually and in combination, influence orientation toward and disengagement from the eyes in individuals diagnosed with depression or not. Participants were 49 healthy individuals and 64 individuals with depression, whose gaze was initially guided to the eye or mouth region immediate

Characterization of liver disease in a cohort of individuals with Niemann-Pick Disease, Type C1.

PURPOSE: Niemann-Pick Disease, Type C1 (NPC1) is a neurodegenerative lysosomal disease in which the first manifestation is often cholestatic liver disease at birth. The neurodegenerative symptoms typically manifest later. The aim of this study was to see if the presence and severity of liver disease at birth predicted whether a participant would develop liver disease later and if there was any correlation with the age of onset of neurological symptoms. METHODS: Liver disease was characterized in 93 individuals with NPC1 using FibroScan, abdominal ultrasound, and plasma liver function tests at

Influence of Dietary Quality on Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction in Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) occurs in up to 95% of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and negatively impacts the quality of life. Although diet is an important component in the management of NBD, the relationship between diet quality and NBD is understudied in the SCI population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the diet quality of individuals with chronic SCI and explore possible relationships between diet quality, especially fiber, and symptoms of NBD, and to evaluate whether individuals with SCI themselves recognize relationships between dietary intake and NBD symptoms. MET

Dissociative experiences in individuals with subclinical psychosis and a history of developmental trauma: a qualitative study.

Background: Among individuals with psychotic experiences, those with a history of developmental trauma face greater symptom severity and worse clinical outcomes compared to those without. Dissociation constitutes a prominent, characteristic of this group's clinical presentation, whose nuances and associated characteristics remain however understudied in psychosis research. We aimed to address this gap by conducting a qualitative study to investigate the phenomenology, context, and impact of dissociative experiences in individuals with subclinical psychosis and a history of developmental trauma

The intersection of structural social factors, loneliness, and social activity in individuals with psychotic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: People with psychotic disorders are disproportionately lonely, which is associated with negative health outcomes. Structural and subjective factors determine social connectedness, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) enables simultaneous quantification of social activity. However, how structural factors (e.g., relationship status, living situation) and sociodemographic variables moderate the relationship between social activity and loneliness in psychosis is unknown. METHODS: N = 253 participants with a psychotic disorder completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Social activity

Genome-wide association studies of lifetime and frequency of cannabis use in 131,895 individuals.

Cannabis is one of the most widely used drugs globally. We performed genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of lifetime (N = 131,895) and frequency (N = 73,374) of cannabis use. For lifetime cannabis use, we identified two loci, one near CADM2 (rs35827242, p = 4.63E-12) and another near GRM3 (rs12673181, p = 6.90E-09). For frequency of cannabis use, we identified one locus near CADM2 (rs4856591, p = 8.10E-09; r2 = 0.76 with rs35827242). Lifetime and frequency of cannabis use were heritable (12.88 vs. 6.63%) and genetically correlated with previous GWASs of lifetime use and cannabis use disord

The determinants of health and health status of individuals in police custody in Australia: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the health of people in police custody facilities and the conditions of their detention have been the focus of repeated scrutiny and investigations since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was published in 1991. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive, consolidated evidence on the health needs of this population. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to identify and describe the available information on their health status and determinants of health. METHODS: We followed the JBI methodology for scoping reviews, including search
