Insect-specific scorpion neurotoxin AaIT gene inserted into a binary vector was transferred into a hybrid poplar clone N-106(P. deltoides x P. simonii) growing in the Southern of China. We obtained sixty-two regenerated plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens transferring system. PCR and PCR-Southern analysis showed that AaIT gene was incorporated into the genome of some recovered poplar plants. A multi-centered field trial was carried out in the Netherlands to evaluate the efficacy of a ready-to-use 5% dicyclanil formulation as a preventative of natural flystrike on lambs. In four different sites a total of 1215 lambs treated with dicyclanil were compared with 431 untreated lambs during periods of 15 to 16 weeks. A rapid and reliable method was developed for the determination of pesticides in fruits and vegetables. A 100 g sample is extracted with a mixture of 200 mL petroleum ether and 100 mL 2-propanol. The extract is backwashed 4 times, twice with aqueous sodium sulfate and twice with 350 mL distilled water, and then dried over 15 g sodium sulfate. The dried extract is analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with selective organochlorine and organophosphorus detection. The British warble fly eradication programme has resulted in the numbers of infested cattle falling from an estimated four million in 1978 to zero in 1991. In 1982, when about 705 herds were infested the disease was made notifiable, and serological surveillance was begun in 1988. In spring 1991, 227,000 blood samples were tested by using the ELISA technique and no warbled animals were found. In addition no clinical cases were reported during 1991.

Fourteen pediculicides currently available in Israel were evaluated for their killing effect on the eggs, nymphs and adults from a laboratory-grown colony of body lice (Pediculus humanus humanus). The efficacy of cyromazine, continuously released from intraruminal capsules at dose rates from 0.5 to 2 mg kg-1 d-1, was evaluated against implants of eggs and first instar larvae of Lucilia cuprina on Merino sheep. The effects of pyrethroids were studied on phosphoinositide breakdown in guinea pig synaptoneurosomes. Similar to other agents that activate voltage-dependent sodium channels, type I and type II pyrethroids stimulated phosphoinositide breakdown.
