Prevalence of impairments 5 years after a head injury, and their relationship with disabilities and outcome.

To determine what consequences cognitive, behavioural or somatic impairments had on disabilities and recovery after a head injury (HI), a population-based sample of 231 adult patients was studied 5 years after an HI. Eighty lower-limb-injured (LLI) patients were considered as controls. Sixty-four LLI and 176 HI patients were reviewed (114 minor, 35 moderate, and 27 severe HI). Prevalence values of headaches (44-54%), dizziness (26-37%), and anxiety (47-63%) were not significantly different in the three HI severity groups, but were significantly lower in patients with an isolated limb injury (1

Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Suture Tape Augmentation for Isolated Syndesmotic Injuries.

BACKGROUND: The best operative construct and technique for treatment of isolated syndesmotic injuries is highly debated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) suture repair or suture tape (ST) augmentation provides any biomechanical advantage to the operative repair of an isolated syndesmotic injury. METHODS: Twelve lower leg specimens underwent biomechanical testing in 6 states: (1) intact, (2) AITFL suture repair, (3) AITFL suture repair + transsyndesmotic suture button (SB), (4) AITFL suture repair + ST augmentati

Frontal Crash Injury Metrics Are Below Mandated Limits for a Spica Casted Child Dummy in Currently Available Restraints.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data defining safe transport protocols for children treated with hip spica casting. Although restraint devices for casted children are available, all federally mandated testing uses a noncasted anthropomorphic test device (ATD or crash dummy). The purpose of this study was to evaluate current restraint options in simulated frontal crash testing using a casted pediatric ATD to determine injury risk to the head, cervical spine, chest, and pelvis. METHODS: Using a 3-year-old ATD, dynamic crash sled tests simulating frontal crash were performed in accordance with

Comparison of two fluid solutions for resuscitation in a rabbit model of crush syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Crush syndrome is a common injury, the main characteristics of which include acute kidney injury. However, there is still lack of reliable animal model of crush syndrome, and it also remains controversial as to which type of fluid should be chosen as a more appropriate treatment option for prevention and treatment of acute kidney injury. METHODS: The rabbits were crushed at the lower limbs for 6 h with 36 times the body weight, which means the pressure of each leg was also 36 times the body weight. Fluid resuscitation was performed from 1 h prior to the end of the crush treatment

Youth and adolescent male ice hockey players at increased risk of fractures: a 20-year analysis of national injury data.

OBJECTIVES: Ice hockey is a high-impact sport that can put athletes in high-risk situations for injuries. While the game has shifted toward speed over physicality, fractures remain a major concern. Therefore, it would be valuable to observe whether this had an effect on fracture rates in men's ice hockey. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency and trends of fractures sustained in men's ice hockey in the United States. METHODS: All men's ice hockey-related fractures presented to United States EDs from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2023 were queried using the National Electronic

Acute Ventilatory Support During Whole-Body Hybrid Rowing in Patients With High-Level Spinal Cord Injury: A Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: High-level spinal cord injury (SCI) results in profound spinal and supraspinal deficits, leading to substantial ventilatory limitations during whole-body hybrid functional electrical stimulation (FES)-rowing, a form of exercise that markedly increases the active muscle mass via electrically induced leg contractions. This study tested the effect of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) on ventilatory and aerobic capacities in SCI. METHODS: This blinded, randomized crossover study enrolled 19 patients with SCI (level of injury ranging from C4 to T8). All patients were familiar with FES-rowi

Needlestick Injuries in Agriculture Workers and Prevention Programs.

There are a variety of biologics, vaccines, antibiotics, and hormones used in animal agriculture. Depending upon the procedure or pharmaceutical used, accidental injections or product exposures can result in mild to severe injuries. Needlestick injury (NSI) prevention, research, and education for veterinarians and agriculture workers is limited. The objective of this study was to collect and review published case reports and case series/surveys on human needlestick exposure to veterinary biologics and to summarize needlestick prevention strategies for agricultural workers/veterinarians. [How many severely injured multiple-trauma patients can benefit from the biomechanical advantage of early mobilization following femoral intramedullary nailing?].

The benefit of early operative stabilization of femoral fractures is established in patients with multiple injuries. In the last few years the unreamed femoral nail is favoured for internal fixation of femoral fractures despite pathophysiological concerns. The foremost advantage of femoral nails compared with plate fixation is the possibility of early full weight bearing. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate, under consideration of the severity of injury, the extent of injury, and the clinical course, if multiple injured patients with concomitant femoral fractures benefit fro
