Background: Vitamin D (VD) plays a central role in calcium homeostasis during pregnancy and has been implicated in redox-related biological processes. While VD deficiency (VDD) has been consistently associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, the relationships between VD insufficiency (VDI), maternal antioxidant-related biomarkers, and neonatal outcomes remain incompletely characterized, particularly during the third trimester. Objective: To determines the prevalence of VDI in third-trimester pregnant women and to examine its associations with antioxidant-related markers and selected neonatal

CD36 and GPR120 play an important role in the perception and preference for fat-rich food consumption. We aimed to investigate the relationship between oro-gustatory perception of lipids, fatty taste preference, and maternal (Gestation + Lactation)-maturation period nutrition status in offspring Sprague-Dawley rats. In our study, mother rats were fed with control (C) or high-fat diets (HFD) during gestation (21 days) and lactation (21 days) periods. After weaning, the offspring were fed with control (C) or high-fat diets (HFD) during the maturation (120 days) period. Daily calorie intake and w

BACKGROUND: Active surveillance systems for monitoring vaccine safety among pregnant women address some of the limitations of a current passive surveillance approach utilized in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, few active surveillance systems in LMIC exist. Our study assessed the feasibility of utilizing three existing data collection systems in Kenya for active surveillance of maternal immunization and to assess the applicability of Global Alignment of Immunization Safety Assessment in pregnancy (GAIA) case definitions that were initially developed for clinical trials within

There is emerging evidence demonstrating an association between maternal polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, however, the cumulative effect of maternal PCOS on the development of ASD or other neuropsychiatry disorders (NPD) in children and separately for males and females has not been examined. We sought to systematically evaluate the influence of maternal PCOS on a wide range of NPD including ASD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chronic tic disorder (CDT), other behavior disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophren

Maternal nutrition status plays an important role in the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), but its direct evidence is … OH increased total cholesterol (P < 0·03) and glucose (P < 0·05) only in dams fed the E-dense diet. Maternal exposure to the E-dense diet attenuated prenatal EtOH-induced weight loss and produced different metabolic outcomes in both dams and pups. While the long-lasting effects of these outcomes are unknown, this study highlights the importance of maternal diet qua …

MTHFR is a key enzyme in folate metabolism. Some genetic polymorphisms code for a less efficient enzyme, increasing serum concentrations of homocysteine. This has been associated with inadequate feto-maternal circulation and increased risk of spontaneous abortion. Paroxonase 1 (PON1) is a multifunctional enzyme that can detoxify homocysteine through its homocysteine thiolactonase activity. We evaluate the association between MTHFR 677 C>T polymorphisms and non-recurrent spontaneous abortion and its interaction with PON1 polymorphisms involved in homocysteine metabolism in women living in flori

OBJECTIVES: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is a worldwide problem. Maternal alcohol consumption is an important risk factor for FASD. It remains unknown which alcohol consumption patterns most strongly predict FASD. The objective of this study was to identify these.
DESIGN: Systematic literature review.
METHODS: We searched in PubMed, PsychINFO, PsycARTICLES, ERIC, CINAHL, Embase and MEDLINE up to August 2018. The query consisted of keywords and their synonyms related to FASD, pregnancy and behaviour. Studies were excluded when not published in English, were reviews or involved non-

BACKGROUND: We aimed to provide the first comprehensive estimates of the burden of group B Streptococcus (GBS), including invasive disease in pregnant and postpartum women, fetal infection/stillbirth, and infants. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis is the current mainstay of prevention, reducing early-onset infant disease in high-income contexts. Maternal GBS vaccines are in development.
METHODS: For 2015 live births, we used a compartmental model to estimate (1) exposure to maternal GBS colonization, (2) cases of infant invasive GBS disease, (3) deaths, and (4) disabilities. We applied incid

OBJECTIVE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an important co-morbidity associated with obesity and a precursor to steatohepatitis. However, the contributions of gestational and early life influences on development of NAFLD and NASH remain poorly appreciated.
METHODS: Two independent studies were performed to examine whether maternal over-nutrition via exposure to high fat diet (HFD) leads to exacerbated hepatic responses to post-natal HFD and methionine choline deficient (MCD) diets in the offspring. Offspring of both control diet- and HFD-fed dams were weaned onto control and HFD,

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and preterm delivery. Both preeclampsia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) of prematurity are associated with impaired angiogenesis. However, the relationship between maternal preeclampsia and BPD remains controversial. This study aims to test whether or not preeclampsia is associated with development of BPD in a cohort of premature infants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study assessing the association between preeclampsia and the risk of developing BPD in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration, altitude and birth weight.
STUDY DESIGN: Birth weights in 235 term pregnancies were investigated for their dependence on maternal hemoglobin concentration after other maternal and pregnancy-specific influences on fetal weight were taken into account. The additional predictive value of hemoglobin concentration on birth weight was assessed using multiple regression. Using published data, the relationship of hemoglobin concentration to altitude was determined, as was the effect of increasing altitude on birth w

AIM: To assess the changing impact of prenatal and perinatal factors with increasing age on first admissions for asthma and acute bronchitis.
METHODS: The Swedish Medical Birth Registry was linked to the National Hospital Discharge Registry for 214,276 Swedish children born in 1987 and 1988. The linkage comprised first admissions for acute bronchitis or asthma from 1987 to 1995. First admissions for gastroenteritis were included to distinguish between factors specific to asthma or bronchitis and non-specific factors related to an increased risk of hospital admission.
RESULTS: Admissions for

Given the widely acknowledged inverse relationship between birth weight and blood pressure, a raised blood pressure in the offspring of smoking mothers as compared to those whose mothers did not smoke, would be anticipated by virtue of the reduction in birth weight associated with smoking during pregnancy. The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy has an effect on blood pressure in childhood independent of its effect on birth weight. Data was obtained from a prospective cohort study of 1708 pregnant women and their singleton

BACKGROUND: Egg development has unique features that render it vulnerable to environmental perturbation. The herbicide atrazine is an endocrine disruptor shown to have detrimental effects on reproduction across several vertebrate species.
OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine whether exposure to low levels of atrazine impairs meiosis in female mammals, using a mouse model; in particular, the study's researchers sought to determine whether and how the fidelity of oocyte chromosome segregation may be affected and whether aging-related aneuploidy is exacerbated.
METHODS: Female C57BL

Depression is one of the most prevalent disorders in the world and may occur during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Fluoxetine (FLX) has been widely prescribed for use during depression in pregnancy and lactation. This study aimed to investigate if in utero and lactational exposure to FLX could compromise reproductive parameters in female offspring. Wistar rats received, by daily gavage, FLX 5mg/kg or 0.3ml of water (control group) from the first gestational day until weaning (21 days). Assessments in the female offspring included: body weight, anogenital distance, vaginal opening, first est

We examined the association between prenatal exposure to cigarettes and adrenocortical responses to stress in 7-month-old infants. Cortisol levels were assessed twice prior to and twice following affect-eliciting procedures in 111 (59 exposed and 52 nonexposed) infants. Cortisol reactivity was defined as the difference between the peak poststressor cortisol level and the pretask cortisol level. Higher values indicated higher cortisol reactivity. Exposed infants had higher peak cortisol reactivity than nonexposed infants. There were no differences in pretask cortisol levels. Maternal hostility

This study examined the effects of maternal ethanol (EtOH) consumption during pregnancy or lactation on glucose homeostasis in the adult rat offspring. Glucose disposal was determined by minimal model during an intravenous glucose tolerance test in rats that had a small or normal birth weight after EtOH exposure in utero and in rats whose mothers were given EtOH during lactation only. All three EtOH groups had decreased glucose tolerance index and insulin sensitivity index, but their glucose effectiveness was not different from that of controls. In addition, EtOH rat offspring that were small
