OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to evaluate the pregnancy rate with the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG IUS) and to analyze the outcome of pregnancies with the LNG IUS in situ in regular use.
STUDY DESIGN: Questionnaires from 17,360 users of the LNG IUS were analyzed. With the consent of women reporting pregnancy during the use of the LNG IUS, related hospital records were reviewed concerning the pregnancies.
RESULTS: Originally 132 pregnancies were reported. Medical records were reviewed from 108 of these women. In 64 pregnancies, conception occurred with the LNG IUS in situ.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether elevated soluble Fas/APO-1 (sFas/APO-1) levels are associated with either autoimmune disease or evidence of flares in autoimmune disease.
METHODS: Thirty-seven serum samples were retrospectively obtained from normal controls and patients with laboratory evidence of autoimmune disease activity. We report a case of a 33-year-old woman who presented with the rapid development of multiple dermal and subcutaneous nodules on the chest, back, abdomen, axilla, neck, and scalp. These nodules were firm, tender, and non-ulcerated and measured from 0.2 to 1.2 cm in diameter. Forty-four patients with total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage underwent repair between 1979 and 1987. The anomalous drainage was supracardiac in 16, cardiac in 12, and infracardiac in 16. Median age at repair was 15 days and median weight, 3.3 kg. In 22 patients (50%) the venous drainage was obstructed. Emergency operation was necessary in 12 patients, and the condition of seven additional patients deteriorated while they were awaiting semiurgent operation. Trophoblast neoplasm cases at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in the two-year period, 1980-1981, have been reviewed. An apparent increased incidence of 1 in 184 deliveries for hydatidiform mole and 1 in 299 deliveries for choriocarcinoma has been noted when compared with a previous review. An association of hydatidiform mole with age and parity was observed in this study. Among patients with hydatidiform mole, 27 percent also had pseudotoxemia and in one case this progressed to eclampsia. In the case of choriocarcinoma, increased parity appears to be associated with a higher mortality.
