Cam Deformities and Limited Hip Range of Motion Are Associated With Early Osteoarthritic Changes in Adolescent Athletes: A Prospective Matched Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) remains incompletely understood. In particular, there is limited documentation of joint damage in adolescent patients with limited range of motion (LROM) of the hip, which is commonly associated with FAI. PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiographs, and clinical examinations over 5 years in a group of athletes from a wide variety of sports with asymptomatic LROM of the hip compared with matched controls. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (prognosis); Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: The authors sc…

Relation among the knee, sagittal spinal alignment, and the spinal range of motion: Investigation in local medical check-ups using the SpinalMouse.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed as an investigation in a local population to assess the relation between the knee joint and spinal alignment in a population-based study using the SpinalMouse. METHODS: Medical check-ups were conducted for residents of a mountain village in Japan. The study population included 107 men and 157 women (528 knees) with a mean age of 71.1 ± 6.8 years (range, 60-87 years). A questionnaire dealing with any current symptoms involving the knees was administered, and physical examinations dealing with the range of motion (ROM) of knee were conducted. The SpinalMouse …

Computational replication of the abnormal secondary kinetic isotope effects in a hydride transfer reaction in solution with a motion assisted H-tunneling model.

We recently reported abnormal secondary deuterium kinetic isotope effects (2° KIEs) for hydride transfer reactions from alcohols to carbocations in acetonitrile (Chem. Comm. 2012, 48, 11337). Experimental 2° KIE values were found to be inflated on the 9-C position in the xanthylium cation but deflated on the β-C position in 2-propanol with respect to the values predicted by the semi-classical transition-state theory. No primary (1°) isotope effect on 2° KIEs was observed. Herein, the KIEs were replicated by the Marcus-like H-tunneling model that requires a longer donor-acceptor distance (DAD)

A test of the validity of range of motion studies of fossil archosaur elbow mobility using repeated-measures analysis and the extant phylogenetic bracket.

Recent studies have presented range of motion (ROM) data in degrees for dinosaur forelimb joints, usually via physical manipulation of one individual. Using these data, researchers have inferred limb orientations, postures, gaits, ecological functions and even phylogenetic trends within clades. However, important areas of concern remain unaddressed; for example, how does ROM at a forelimb joint change after soft tissues are lost in archosaurs? And are fossil ROM methodologies amenable to reproducibility and statistical analysis? Here, we investigated these questions using the extant phylogenet…

The effects of serum potassium and magnesium levels in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome on the timing of ventricular wall motion and the pattern of ventricular strain and torsion.

Gitelman's syndrome is a primary renal tubular hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. Hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia can cause cardiac tissue excitability and conduction. Global ventricular mechanical function is directly related to the contractile properties of cardiac myocytes, which are largely dependent on the flow of ions such as potassium and magnesium. Here, we show that increased levels of potassium, in addition to magnesium, in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome significantly impacts the timing of ventricular wall motion and the pattern of ventricular strain and torsion. Two-dimensional spe…

Molecular motions as a drug target: mechanistic simulations of anthrax toxin edema factor function led to the discovery of novel allosteric inhibitors.

Edema Factor (EF) is a component of Bacillus anthracis toxin essential for virulence. Its adenylyl cyclase activity is induced by complexation with the ubiquitous eukaryotic cellular protein, calmodulin (CaM). EF and its complexes with CaM, nucleotides and/or ions, have been extensively characterized by X-ray crystallography. Those structural data allowed molecular simulations analysis of various aspects of EF action mechanism, including the delineation of EF and CaM domains through their association energetics, the impact of calcium binding on CaM, and the role of catalytic site ions. Further

[Mental practice has influence on limitation of motion and muscle atrophy following immobilisation of the radiocarpal joint - a prospective randomised experimental study].

PURPOSE: Distal radial fracture is the most common bony injury in man. Still there are unsatisfying treatment results, such as limited joint movement, muscle atrophy and pain, resulting from immobilisation while the fracture is healing. During this period, also joint movement seems to be "forgotten". This study experimentally examined if the method of mental practice, meaning the systematic repetition of a consciously imagined movement or action without simultaneous practical execution, can positively influence these findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 21 right-handed males had application of a

The effect of wrist position on the relative motion of tendon, nerve, and subsynovial connective tissue within the carpal tunnel in a human cadaver model.

The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of wrist position on the relative motion of the middle finger flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon, subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT), median nerve, and flexor retinaculum during simulated active finger motion. The relative motion of each tissue was measured by fluoroscopy in 10 human cadavers. Measurements were obtained for wrist positions of neutral (0 degree extension), 30 and 60 degrees of flexion, and 30 and 60 degrees of extension. The shear strain index (SSI) was defined as the difference in motion between two tissues (tendon…
