Inclusion of older adults in national cancer control and non-communicable disease plans: A global analysis.

BACKGROUND: National cancer control plans and non-communicable disease strategies are key instruments to guide cancer policy and resource allocation. However, the extent to which these frameworks explicitly address older adults remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a structured content analysis of national cancer control plans and non-communicable disease strategies identified through the International Cancer Control Partnership database. Plans were screened for inclusion of older adult-specific provisions, including explicit mention, age-specific interventions, geriatric assessment, workfor

Upconversion fluorescence immunochromatographic assay for highly sensitive and rapid detection of ovarian function indicators: follicle-stimulating hormone and anti-Müllerian hormone.

The assessment of ovarian function is crucial for female reproductive health, assisted reproduction, and the early detection of gynecological diseases. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), two key markers of ovarian function, are essential for accurate evaluations that guide clinical decision-making. However, conventional detection techniques, such as ELISA, face limitations including low sensitivity, poor specificity, and prolonged detection times. To overcome these challenges, we developed an upconversion fluorescence immunochromatographic assay for highly sen

Use of decision algorithms for viscoelastic tests and use of blood products in patients undergoing liver transplantation: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Viscoelastic tests (VETs), including thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), provide a global assessment of hemostatic function. The use of a TEG or ROTEM system to guide the administration of blood products has been shown to reduce transfusion requirements in certain types of surgeries, but the decision algorithms for Viscoelastic tests needs to be assessed. This review aimed to assess all published evidence on viscoelastic testing in the context the use of decision algorithms for VETs on liver transplantation. METHODS: A systematic review was perfo

I feel competent and proud when I recall experiential: a self-determination perspective.

Consumption is a ubiquitous activity in which consumers satisfy different needs such as the need for competence. In three studies, we tested the influence of type of purchase, material versus experiential, on the satisfaction of the need for competence. In addition, we examined pride and prestige as two consequences. Participants in study 1 were randomly assigned to either recall an experiential or material purchase and completed questions assessing pride and demographics. Results showed a positive influence of experiential purchases on pride. Participants completed a similar battery in study

Innovations in Band and Loop Space Maintainers: Transition From Conventional to Advanced.

Primary dentition helps jaw development, mastication, speech, and esthetics and guides and maintains space for the permanent successors until they erupt. Premature tooth loss due to dental trauma and caries is an emerging concern in pediatric patients, necessitating space maintenance to prevent loss of arch length and maintain space for developing permanent teeth. Innovations in conventional space maintainers have significantly improved patient and operator comfort by reducing chairside time and increasing durability and operative efficacy. This case series is a compilation of five cases of yo

Comparison of learning text vs. picture symbol AAC representations for young children on the autism spectrum.

Children on the autism spectrum1 with minimal speech are generally provided with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems that represent vocabulary using picture symbols (i.e., color line drawings). However, there has been minimal research investigating the comparative effectiveness of picture symbols vs. other types of symbol representation (e.g., text) in supporting the communication of children on the autism spectrum. Using a single case adapted alternating treatments experimental design, the current study compared learning of picture symbol and text representations, measure

The role of noninvasive biomarkers for monitoring cell injury in advanced liver fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and reliable diagnosis and monitoring of hepatic fibrosis is increasingly important given the variable natural history in chronic liver disease (CLD) and expanding antifibrotic therapeutic options targeting reversibility of early-stage cirrhosis. This highlights the need to develop more refined and effective noninvasive techniques for the dynamic assessment of fibrogenesis and fibrolysis. AREAS COVERED: We conducted a literature review on PubMed, from 1 December 1970, to 1 November 2024, to evaluate and compare available blood-based and imaging-based noninvasive tools f

Quality of Life and non-motor symptoms Improvement in Parkinson's Disease through Nutritional Intervention: a Case Study.

Non-motor symptomatology in Parkinson's disease (PD) is related to patients' quality of life (QoL). The Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NNMS) assesses QoL by investigating numerous domains including nutritional status, which is represented by domain 6. Patients with PD commonly suffer from dysphagia, and consequently malnutrition, leading to sarcopenia and increasing motor deficits in relation to loss of muscle mass and energy deficit. The impact of dysphagia on PD patients' health status, makes it necessary to study the effectiveness of specific nutritional programs in addressing feeding needs, wit

Practical guide to management after an acute pulmonary embolism.

Follow-up after acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is important to assess recovery, consider the need for on-going anticoagulation and identify chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a rare but serious complication of PE. 16 dilemmas in the follow-up of acute PE were identified by a steering committee of four pulmonologists and a haematologist with interest in PE and/or CTEPH. Current literature was reviewed and a practical approach suggested based on expert consensus. Dilemmas discussed included: (1) how to manage a breathless patient; (2) what to do if CTEPH is suspected; (3) the

Prioritizing brain Metabolism: Evidence from brain temperatures of severe underweight individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Severe and prolonged underweight can lead to a hypometabolic state and hormonal adaptations that reduce body temperature often found in Anorexia Nervosa (AN). However, the effect of these changes on brain temperature remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether brain temperature remains stable despite lower body temperature in a severe underweight state, testing the hypothesis that the brain prioritizes its own energy needs during periods of food deprivation. METHOD: We collected magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) measurements from 30 female patients with acute Anorexia Nerv

Physiotherapist assisted wrist movement protocol for EEG-based corticokinematic coherence assessment.

This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a physiotherapist-assisted wrist-movement protocol to measure corticokinematic coherence (CKC) using electroencephalography (EEG) in healthy adults. The broader goal is to evaluate CKC's potential as a proprioceptive assessment tool in clinical settings. Thirty-two healthy young adults participated in a hand movement task, in which a physiotherapist periodically moved their hand by relying on a "visual metronome". We measured CKC by co-recording EEG and hand acceleration data. CKC was observed at the fundamental movement frequency and its first har

Discovery and Clinical Validation of C1M and C4M as Soluble Biomarkers for Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Symptom Prediction in Psoriatic Disease and Other Inflammatory Arthropathies.

Psoriatic disease (PsD) is a complex, heterogeneous disease with unmet medical needs in terms of its diagnosis, management, and prognosis. The identification of biomarkers could improve the implementation of precision medicine in PsD, but to date, none of these biomarkers have been clinically validated. Biomarkers can support clinical trials in several ways, including (1) diagnostics, (2) drug pharmacodynamics, (3) prognostics for patient selection and monitoring of drug efficacy, and (4) predictive models for clinical outcomes. Biomarkers can sometimes be used for both diagnosis and prognosis

2025 Clinical Trials Update on Hemophilia, VWD, and Rare Inherited Bleeding Disorders.

Clinical trial programs for inherited bleeding disorders feature an array of innovative prophylaxis options: engineered clotting factor concentrates, FVIIIa mimetics, gene therapies, and biologics to bolster thrombin generation (rebalancing agents). Increasingly, non-hemophilia bleeding disorders and a broader demographic (females, children, and infants) are being incorporated into study populations. Ongoing clinical trials broadly address three themes: (1) indication expansion for licensed therapeutics in previously uninvestigated patient subgroups or clinical scenarios, (2) evaluation of eff
